Fortune smiled on me today! I went to Venice to St. Mark's Square. I saw a small line to the Basilica of San Marco and realized that you have to get up and wait to get to the middle of this temple! In the summer, this queue is too long... you can't stand it for long under the scorching sun. And now it's winter, there are few tourists, and it's time to get acquainted with those curiosities that I've always dreamed of.

Сьогодні мені усміхнулася фортуна! Я поїхала до Венеції на площу Сан Марко. Побачила малу чергу до Базиліки Сан Марко і зрозуміла, що треба ставати і чекати щоб попасти до середини цього храму! Влітку ця черга довга предовга... під палючим сонцем довго не вистоїш. А зараз зима, туристів мало і саме пора познайомитись з тими цікавинками, про які завжди мріяла.

The Basilica of San Marco is the heart of Venice. It is located on the square of the same name. When you see this beautiful church, you immediately notice how it shines in the sun. These are glittering golden mosaic paintings and domes covered with gold leaf. It is not for nothing that the Basilica of San Marco is called the Golden Church. The basilica attracts and fascinates at first glance. I stood with my head held high, looking into each picture, into each curl of the bas-relief. I could not even imagine what was waiting for me inside the temple!

Це виблискують золоті мозаїчні картини та куполи, що покриті сусальним золотом. Недарма Базиліку Сан Марко називають Золотою церквою. Базиліка з першого погляду притягує та заворожує. Я стояла з високо піднятою головою, вдивляючись в кожну картину, в кожний завиток барельєфу. Я навіть не могла собі уявити, що чекало мене всередині храму!

The construction of St. Mark's Basilica lasted almost 40 years and ended in 832. This church was built to bury the relics of St. Mark, a disciple of the apostles Peter and Paul. The relics of Saint Mark were brought from Alexandria by merchants. They hid the bones of St. Mark among pork carcasses so that the Muslims would not find them. Saint Mark became the patron saint and protector of Venice.
Since its construction, St. Mark's Basilica has undergone significant changes. It was originally built in the form of a Greek cross in the Byzantine style with five huge domes. Round domes are not inherent in the Catholic construction of temples. The basilica successfully combines ancient and oriental art. The photo taken from the height of the Bell Tower of San Marco shows the Basilica from above. You can see all five domes and the shape of the Latin cross in which today's Basilica is.

The facade of the Basilica of San Marco consists of several tiers. More than 400 marble columns decorate the facade of the church. You can get to the middle of the Basilica through four doors framed by arched vaults. Each arch is decorated with a mosaic painting from the lives of saints. At the very top in the center you can see a majestic winged lion and above it a statue of the patron saint of Venice, Saint Mark.

From the first steps, all the beauty of the Basilica of San Marco opens before me. The central door leads me to a room with mosaic paintings from the Old Testament on the walls. Lifting my head up, I see a picture of the Creation of the World. Walking further, I see the walls covered with gold, glistening from the sunlight that penetrates through the narrow windows. Paintings from the lives of biblical saints of the Old and New Testaments, the lives of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and Saint Mark, various allegorical figures are laid out in gold leaf, covered with transparent glass on top. Thanks to this technology, everything gains a special shine. It's very light and clear at the top, but everything gets darker towards the floor. As it turned out, this was done specifically to show the difference between heaven and earth.

З перших кроків переді мною відкривається вся краса Базиліки Сан Марко. Центральні двері ведуть до мене до приміщення, де на стінах розміщені мозаїчні картини зі Старого Завіту. Піднявши голову вверх, я бачу картину Створення світу. Пройшовши далі я бачу стіни вкриті золотом, що виблискує від сонячного проміння, що проникають через вузькі вікна. In total, the Basilica contains 8,000 square meters of mosaics, both on the walls and on the floors. The circles laid out on the floor repeat the domes of the Basilica, which are placed on top. What painstaking and masterful work! And after 20 centuries we can contemplate this exquisite beauty!

Хочу звернути вашу увагу, друзі на підлоги, що вкриті мозаїкою з кольорового дорогоцінного мармуру. Взагальному в Базиліці міститься 8 тисячі квадратних метрів мозаїки, як на стінах так і на підлогах. Кола, викладені на підлозі повторюють куполи Базиліки, що розміщені зверху. Яка кропітка робота! І через 20 століть ми можемо споглядати цю вишукану красу!

It is in the central altar that the remains of St. Mark are kept. Under the canopy resting on four carved columns is a stone coffin. Behind the altar is an infallible relic, the so-called Pala d'Oro. A large number of jewelers and other craftsmen worked on it for 300 years. Images of biblical saints can be seen on a huge painting covered with gold and precious stones. The picture is worth attention. It is known all over the world and tourists come to see the beauty and worship the remains of St. Mark.

With admiration and bated breath, I walked from one altar to another. I looked closely at the golden frescoes, which are steeped in history and time. But my biggest dream was to get to the terrace called Loggia dei Cavalli. For five long years, I gazed either at the kilometer-long line of people wanting to get inside the Basilica of San Marco, or at the terrace where the lucky ones walked and looked at the famous horses... You could stand all day under the hot sun and not get inside the Basilica of San Marco. After all, working hours are limited.

З захопленням та затамованим подихом я ходила від одного вівтаря до іншого. Я приглядалася до золотих фресок, які просякнуті історією та часом. Але найбільшою моєю мрією було потрапити на терасу, що називається Loggia dei Cavalli. Today I climb the steep stairs to the terrace to see the museum and its priceless exhibits with my own eyes. The most important of them are the horses that were brought from Constantinople during the crusade. These horses are made of bronze and covered with gold. Only once did these four horses leave St. Mark's Basilica, when Napoleon took them to Paris, where they appeared on the Arc de Carousel. After the fall of Napoleon, the famous horses returned to their place. A copy of the horses is now located on the facade of St. Mark's Basilica.

Many works of art and objects of worship are collected in the museum. These are bas-reliefs, mosaic fragments of paintings, a large collection of Persian carpets and other relics.

I am incredibly lucky! I stand on the Loggia dei Cavalli and contemplate St. Mark's Square. The sea stretches before me. In the Middle Ages, this square was the door to Venice. Traders and traveling people came here. I stand next to the horses so close that I can see every curve of their bodies. Dreams have the ability to come true, you just need to really want it.
