Pasamos una entretenida noche en el puerto Liwo Riwo y en la mañana todos estábamos ansiosos porque íbamos a conocer el Salto Aponwao o Chinak Merú, una de las atracciones más impactantes de La Gran Sabana.
We had gotten up very early because before going to the Aponwao we had to leave everything collected and stored in the vans: tents, backpacks, etc., since when we returned we would leave Liwo Riwo. This excursion was optional for those of us who signed up for this one-week tour and it was paid separately, but I think we had all found out something about the place and we didn't want to miss it, we all paid to go!
Nos habíamos levantado muy temprano porque antes de ir al Aponwao debíamos dejar todo recogido y guardado en las camionetas: carpas, mochilas, etc., ya que al regresar nos iríamos de Liwo Riwo. Esta excursión era opcional para los que nos anotamos en este tour de una semana y se pagaba aparte, pero creo que todos habíamos averiguado algo sobre el lugar y no nos lo queríamos perder, ¡todos pagamos para ir!
At approximately 8:00 in the morning, the curiaras, indigenous boats with built-in outboard motors, were ready at the port to go down the Aponwao River, an important sub-basin of the eastern section of the Canaima National Park with 250 km in length which is born in the Sierra de Lema and flows into the Caroní River.
Aproximadamente a las 8:00 de la mañana, las curiaras, embarcaciones indígenas con motor fuera de borda incorporado, estaban listas en el puerto para bajar por el río Aponwao, una importante subcuenca de la sección oriental del Parque Nacional Canaima con 250 Km de longitud que nace en la Sierra de Lema y desemboca en el río Caroní.
They gave us the life jackets that we had to use and we embarked, the waters of this river are like amber, according to what I investigated they have that color because many roots, branches, leaves and tree trunks fall into them, and when they decompose they give it that tone.
Nos dieron los salvavidas que teníamos que usar y embarcamos, las aguas de este río son como ámbar, según investigué tienen ese color porque en ellas caen muchas raíces, ramas, hojas y troncos de árboles, y al descomponerse le dan ese tono.
We were ecstatic looking around us, on both sides everything is green while we navigate the river, a quiet journey that lasts about 25 minutes. Although at first the sky was cloudy and we thought it would rain, then fortunately it cleared up.
Estábamos extasiados observando a nuestro alrededor, a ambos lados todo es verdor mientras vamos navegando por el río, recorrido tranquilo que dura unos 25 minutos. Aunque al principio el cielo estaba nublado y pensamos que llovería, luego afortunadamente se despejó.
There is also the option of going to the Aponwao Falls on foot, it is about 45 minutes from the community of Liwo Riwo, as a good hiker, if I return to this place another time I would like to know that route too.
Está además la opción de ir al Salto Aponwao a pie, son unos 45 minutos desde la comunidad de Liwo Riwo, como buena senderista, si vuelvo a este lugar en otra oportunidad me gustaría conocer esa ruta también.
We arrived at the port and we could already hear the water falling, to get to the viewpoint and see the Aponwao Fall from above you have to walk about 200 meters. At this point it's important to follow the instructions of the guide and the sign that is there and not to approach the edge to avoid a fatal accident.
Llegamos al puerto y ya se escuchaba el agua cayendo, para llegar al mirador y ver el Salto Aponwao desde arriba hay que caminar unos 200 metros. En este punto es importante seguir las instrucciones del guía y del cartel que está allí y no acercarse al borde para evitar un accidente mortal.
The Aponwao Fall, also known as Chinak Merú, has a height of more than 100 meters, I didn't find exact data, they say between 105 and 110 meters. Seeing that volume of water falling is impressive and the sound even more so. During the week that this tour of La Gran Sabana lasted, we were amazed every day with every place we went, but definitely this waterfall was like the climax, even its name indicates it: Aponwaaao!
El Salto Aponwao, también conocido como Chinak Merú, tiene una altura de más de 100 metros, no encontré datos exactos, dicen que entre 105 y 110 metros. Ver ese volumen de agua cayendo es impresionante y el sonido aún más. Durante la semana que duró este tour por La Gran Sabana todos los días nos asombrábamos con cada sitio al que íbamos pero definitivamente esta cascada fue como el clímax, hasta su nombre lo indica: ¡Aponwaaao!
From the viewpoint we can also be left with our mouths open with the landscape of the river between the savannah.
Desde el mirador también podemos quedar boquiabiertos con el paisaje del río entre la sabana.
What follows is to go down a path through abundant vegetation to get to where the waterfall falls. It's like 10 minutes.
Lo que sigue es bajar por un sendero entre abundante vegetación para llegar hasta donde cae el salto. Son como unos 10 minutos.
As soon as you leave that small forest, a spectacular setting opens before you that combines the gigantic waterfall, the water that reaches you as if you were being sprayed with an atomizer and the roar of the vital liquid falling.
Apenas sales de ese pequeño bosque se abre ante ti un escenario espectacular que combina la gigantesca cascada, el agua que te alcanza como si te rociaran con un atomizador y el estruendo del vital líquido cayendo.
I was shocked by all this landscape, the energy that is released here is very strong, for a reason these ancestral lands are full of mysticism.
Yo estaba conmocionada con todo este paisaje, la energía que se desprende aquí es muy fuerte, por algo estas tierras ancestrales están llenas de misticismo.
Before my sister began to do some kind of meditation, I asked her to take several photos of me there.

It's not possible to get too close to where the water falls from that height of more than 100 meters because it knocks you down and drags you, it is very dangerous, what you can do is go further down, where some wells form and enjoy a bath there, I only dipped my feet.
No es posible acercarse demasiado donde cae el agua de esa altura de más de 100 metros porque te tumba y te arrastra, es muy peligroso, lo que sí se puede hacer es irse más abajo, donde se forman unos pozos y disfrutar un baño allí, yo sólo sumergí mis pies.
We spent more than an hour enjoying this beauty and then we went back upstairs to visit the small indigenous community that is there and offers visitors some things to eat and crafts. We ate a torreja (sweet made from wheat flour and sugar that is fried in oil) and drank coffee.
Estuvimos más de una hora disfrutando esta belleza y luego regresamos arriba para visitar a la pequeña comunidad indígena que está allí y ofrece a los visitantes algunas cosas para comer y artesanía. Comimos una torreja (dulce hecho de harina de trigo y azúcar que se fríe en aceite) y tomamos café.
We said goodbye to this majestic place and on the way back to the port of Liwo Riwo I took a closer look at the landscape along the river. Greenery and dryness, life and death… the course of nature.

Nuestro s paisajes son hermososmhoy en dia el Arco minero y sus explotadoresa causados graves daños ecologicos de deforestacion y contminacion de rios para extraer eloro es una pena porque ellugar es uno de los pulmones del planeta y todo ello realizado por complicidad gubernamental
Sin duda hay un gran impacto en Canaima por la minería, pero al menos en los sitios que visitamos no vimos destrucción, la naturaleza aún reina. Gracias por comentar :)
