Towards the summit of Las Verdes Peak and admiring the lagoons at its feet, Mérida - Venezuela / Hacia la cumbre del Pico Las Verdes y admirando las lagunas a sus pies, Mérida - Venezuela

It was dawn, we had not slept at all because of the intense cold and all we wanted was for the sun to appear soon to cover our camp on the High of Mifafí and feel more comfortable. The sky was blue with no trace of clouds but as we were between several shady mountains, it took a while for the heat to reach us.

Estaba amaneciendo, no habíamos dormido nada por el intenso frío y todo lo que deseábamos era que el sol apareciera pronto para cubrir nuestro campamento en el Alto de Mifafí y sentirnos más cómodos. El cielo estaba azul sin rastro de nubes pero como estábamos entre varias montañas que nos hacían sombra, el calor tardó en llegar a nosotros.

When we got out of the tent we saw that the cover of it was frozen, no wonder we felt like we were in a freezer! No snow had fallen but a kind of frost had enveloped us.

Al salir de la carpa vimos que la cubierta de la misma estaba congelada, ¡con razón nos sentíamos como metidas en una nevera! No había caído nieve pero una especie de escarcha nos había envuelto.

I removed the tent cover and put it aside to let the sun dry it, we had to pack everything up because we were going to leave Base Camp 1.

Quité la cubierta de la carpa y la puse a un lado para que el sol la secara, debíamos recoger todo porque íbamos a dejar el Campamento Base 1.

At 8:30 a.m. the sun was already shining on the valley where we were and after we had all our things ready to leave, we took the opportunity to take a few pictures among the spectacular scenery of the Venezuelan Andes.

A las 8:30 am ya el sol iluminaba completamente el valle donde estábamos y luego de tener todas las cosas listas para irnos, aprovechamos para hacer unas cuantas fotos entre ese paisaje espectacular de los andes venezolanos.

We had breakfast and after a while the mules arrived that most of the people in the group had hired to carry their things, we preferred to carry our backpacks, tents, etc.

Desayunamos y al rato llegaron las mulas que había contratado la mayoría de la gente del grupo para que llevaran sus cosas, nosotras preferimos cargar nuestras mochilas, carpa, etc.

We started the hike at about 10:30 in the morning, the route of this day, about 5 km, would take us to climb Las Verdes (The Greens) Peak and then to Base Camp 2 to sleep that night. This trail passes behind El Domo, an impressive rock formation that I showed in the first post about this hike, there are also several very nice small lakes.

Comenzamos la caminata como a las 10:30 de la mañana, la ruta de este día, de unos 5 Km, nos llevaría a subir el Pico Las Verdes y luego al Campamento Base 2 para dormir esa noche. Este sendero pasa detrás de El Domo, una impresionante formación rocosa que mostré en la primera publicación sobre esta excursión, por allí hay también varias lagunas pequeñas muy bonitas.

The weather had already started to change and many clouds appeared in the sky, as we were active we didn't feel cold, we just hoped it wouldn't rain. The environment around here is so stunning that it's hard to get bad pictures.

El clima ya había comenzado a cambiar y aparecieron muchas nubes en el cielo, como estábamos activos no sentíamos frío, sólo esperábamos que no lloviera. El entorno por aquí es tan impactante que es difícil que las fotos te queden mal.

Up to the base of Las Verdes Peak the road is not complicated, it doesn't have very steep climbs. We got there and as we were going to start the ascent and my sister and I were carrying our backpacks, the guide suggested that to be more comfortable we leave them with the mules like everyone else, they were going to carry everything to Base Camp 2. We asked how much it cost to see if we had the amount in cash, it was not much, we paid and the truth was a good idea to go light to the top.

Hasta la base del Pico Las Verdes el camino no es complicado, no tiene subidas muy abruptas. Llegamos allí y como íbamos a comenzar el ascenso y mi hermana y yo cargábamos nuestras mochilas, la guía nos sugirió que para ir más cómodas las dejáramos con las mulas como todos los demás, ellas iban a llevar todo hacia el Campamento Base 2. Preguntamos cuánto costaba para ver si teníamos el monto en efectivo, no era mucho, pagamos y la verdad fue una buena idea ir ligeras hacia la cima.

It was already noon when we started to climb and the threat of rain continued. This trail is not of great difficulty, it has some rocky parts where you have to be careful but anyone can do it once acclimatized to the altitude, however it is important to go slowly and hydrate to avoid decompensation.

Ya era mediodía cuando comenzamos a subir y la amenaza de lluvia continuaba. Este sendero no es de gran dificultad, tiene algunas partes rocosas en las que hay que ir con cuidado pero cualquier persona puede hacerlo una vez aclimatada a la altura, sin embargo es importante ir despacio e hidratarse para evitar descompensarse.

The landscape when you get to the top is quite deserted, there is little vegetation, not even the frailejones (Espeletia) that abound everywhere around here can be seen.

El paisaje cuando vas llegando a la cima es bastante desértico, hay poca vegetación, ni siquiera se ven los frailejones (Espeletia) que tanto abundan en todas partes por aquí.

The final stretch is practically pure rock and you begin to enjoy the extraordinary panoramic views of this part of the Sierra de la Culata National Park.

La recta final es prácticamente pura roca y ya empiezas a disfrutar de las extraordinarias panorámicas de esta parte del Parque Nacional Sierra de la Culata.

Shortly before reaching the summit of Las Verdes Peak, which has an altitude of 4,570 meters above sea level, the three greenish lagoons at its feet unfold before our eyes, which is why this peak is so named.

Faltando poco para llegar a la cima del Pico Las Verdes, que tiene una altura de 4.570 msnm (metros sobre el nivel del mar), se despliegan ante nuestra mirada las tres lagunas de color verdoso que están a sus pies y por las cuales este pico se llama así.

We advanced a few more meters along the rocks and reached the summit at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon. A long metal tube is inserted there indicating that this is the highest point of the peak. See the surroundings of this wonder of nature:

Avanzamos unos metros más por las rocas e hicimos cumbre aproximadamente a la 1:30 de la tarde. Allí está insertado un largo tubo de metal que indica que es el punto más alto del pico. Vean los alrededores de esta maravilla de la naturaleza:

We spent half an hour enjoying the views and then we went down to go to where we would spend the night, our Base Camp 2, it took us about an hour to get there.

Estuvimos una media hora disfrutando las vistas y luego bajamos para ir hacia donde pasaríamos la noche, nuestro Campamento Base 2, tardamos como una hora en llegar allá.

The mules that carried our backpacks and tents had left everything in place and as soon as we arrived we quickly set up our tents, some drops were falling and we didn't want anything to get wet.

Las mulas que cargaron nuestras mochilas y carpas habían dejado todo en el lugar y apenas llegamos armamos rápidamente nuestras carpas, estaban cayendo algunas gotas y no queríamos que nada se mojara.

Nearby there is a river so we went to collect water to drink, we also washed our hands, our face, it was freezing!

Cerca hay un río así que fuimos a recoger agua para beber, también nos lavamos las manos, la cara, ¡estaba helada!

This place was between some big rocks and we put the tents as close to them as possible to try to protect us from the cold wind, which didn't work very well...

Este lugar estaba entre unas grandes rocas y pusimos las carpas lo más cerca de ellas posible para tratar de protegernos del frío viento, cosa que no funcionó mucho…

Then the whole group got together to talk and hang out and it started to rain, so we went into a cave there to continue our meeting. One of the guys had brought a spirit and offered it to us, it was pretty strong hahaha, great for warming up.

Luego nos juntamos todo el grupo para conversar y pasar el rato y comenzó a llover, así que nos metimos como en una cueva que hay allí para seguir nuestra reunión. Uno de los compañeros había llevado una bebida espirituosa y nos ofreció, estaba bastante fuerte jajaja, excelente para entrar en calor.

The temperature dropped too much and everyone took refuge in their tents even though it was still very early, it wasn't dark yet. My sister and I prepared a sandwich for dinner and after eating I went to urinate, I was too lazy to put on my boots and went out with my socks and trekking sandals. By bad luck or not seeing well because it was dark, I fell in a puddle and I was left without dry socks to sleep hahaha, my sister was laughing her head off... I wrapped my feet in a leggin to keep them warm during the night and tried to sleep, no success but I got some rest...

La temperatura bajó demasiado y cada quien se refugió en su carpa aunque era muy temprano aún, no había anochecido. Mi hermana y yo preparamos un sándwich para cenar y luego de comer fui a orinar, me dio flojera ponerme las botas y salí con las medias (celcetines) y las sandalias de trekking. Por mala suerte o no ver bien porque estaba oscuro, caí en un charco y me quedé sin medias secas para dormir jajaja, mi hermana estaba muerta de la risa… me envolví los pies en un leggin para mantenerlos calientes durante la noche e intenté dormir, no hubo éxito pero algo descansé…
