A sentimental return to the Forest. Powrót sentymentalny do Lasu Łabędzkiego [EN/PL]

Las Łabędzki jest miejscem w Gliwicach, z którym wiążę wiele wspomnień. Mieszkałem w jego pobliżu w latach 1989-1996. Później przeprowadziłem się blisko centrum, a w 2003 roku wyjechałem z Gliwic.

Łabędzki Forest is a place in Gliwice that I associate many memories with. I lived nearby from 1989 to 1996. Later I moved close to the center, and in 2003 I left Gliwice.

Jest to mieszany las, rośną w nim bardzo różne drzewa, przeważnie liściaste, ale też i nieco sosen. Sporo jest dębów, które dają pożywienie występującym w lesie dzikom. Zdarza się, że tutejsze dziki wychodzą na rekonesans w miasto.

It is a mixed forest, with many different trees, mostly deciduous, but also some pines. There are many oaks, which provide food for the wild boars that live in the forest. Sometimes the local wild boars come out to reconnoiter the city.

Przez 19 lat las zmienił się nieco. Niektóre obszary wycięto i ogrodzono, niektóre pomniejsze ścieżki zmieniły swój bieg.

The forest has changed a bit over the past 19 years. Some areas have been cut down and fenced off, and some minor paths have changed their course.

Jedną z ciekawostek, które skrywa Las Łabędzki są pozostałości cmentarza cholerycznego z XIX wieku.

One of the interesting attractions hidden in the Łabędzki Forest are the remains of a cholera cemetery from the 19th century.

Pamiętam to drzewo, miało niegdyś głęboką, wypaloną dziurę w pniu, chyba po trafieniu pioruna. Wciąż trwa po tylu latach, chociaż jego uszkodzony pień uległ rozszczepieniu.

I remember this tree, it once had a deep, burnt hole in its trunk, probably from a lightning strike. It still stands after all these years, although its damaged trunk has split.

Przez las wiedzie droga czołgowa, którą czołgi z zakładu OBRUM jeździły (i może jeszcze jeżdżą) na poligon, który stanowi odgrodzoną część lasu.

There is a tank road through the forest, which the tanks from the OBRUM plant used (and perhaps still use) to drive to the training ground, which is a fenced off part of the forest.

Poligon jest odgrodzony drutem kolczastym, jednak miejscowi bywalcy porobili w nim dziury i bez oporów spacerują po części, do której teoretycznie obowiązuje zakaz wstępu.

The training ground is fenced off with barbed wire, but local visitors have made holes in it and have no qualms about walking around the part to which entry is theoretically prohibited.

Okolice wyschniętego jeziorka - jak je nazywaliśmy kiedyś. W tym miejscu, na spacerze z rodzicami, w wieku 8 czy 9 lat wymyśliłem komunizm (nie wiedząc wcześniej na czym polega). Byłem smutny, gdy ojciec powiedział mi, czym jest w istocie mój pomysł, bo wiedziałem o komunizmie tyle, że to nic dobrego. Opowiem o tym jednak innym razem, w innym miejscu.

The area around the dried-up lake - as we used to call it. In this place, on a walk with my parents, at the age of 8 or 9, I invented communism (without knowing what it was). I was sad when my father told me what my idea really was, because all I knew about communism was that it was nothing good. But I will tell you about it another time, in another place.
