Hello everyone, regarding the tsunami tragedy that hit Aceh 18 years ago, it is really interesting for me to discuss, although the tragedy has been going on for 18 years, until now it still leaves deep sorrow for the people of Aceh, why not, the natural disaster of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Aceh dozens of years ago which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives really hit the people of Aceh, many lost their family members and even many whose bodies were not found, especially in the infrastructure sector which has been classified as completely destroyed as a whole, until now it is still stored in the minds of the people of Aceh about the terrible nightmare memory of Aceh.
The great tragedy of the deadly earthquake and tsunami left many witnesses that we can remember until now, such as in my previous writing which tells the story of the tsunami tragedy from the Aceh Tsunami Museum, from that museum alone we will get a lot of real information about the tsunami tragedy that hit Aceh which makes us silent and reflect on how devastated the Acehnese people were by that event.
In my writing this time, I will tell you about the other side of the tsunami tragedy that hit Aceh, the story of the miracle behind this heartbreaking tragedy, namely the stranding of a wooden boat belonging to a fisherman on top of a resident's house in the Lampulo area, Banda Aceh.

Before the earthquake and tsunami occurred, the wooden ship, which was 25 meters long, 5.5 meters wide, and weighed 20 tons, was in the Krueng Aceh River, Lampulo, which was its docking place. When the tragedy occurred, the wooden ship was carried away by the tsunami waves and stranded 1 kilometer from its original docking place in the Krueng Aceh River to the middle of a residential area in Lampulo Village, Kuta Alam District, Banda Aceh.
Finally, the fishing boat that was dragged by the tsunami waves got stuck on the roof of one of the residents' houses in Lampulo. He was one of the rich people in the village who served as the Head of Pertamina at that time, and until now the fishing boat is still left on the roof of the house and has been used as a Tsunami Monument.
The tsunami ship monument on top of a house in Lampulo, Banda Aceh, is one of the historical sites that attracts many visitors. This monument is a symbol of the power of nature and the resilience of the Acehnese people in facing natural disasters.
Beside the monument, a structure was built in such a way as to act as a ladder to climb up to reach the ship's hull. Visitors who come will be allowed to climb up either to just look around or to take some pictures to document their respective visits.
The stranded ship was made into a monument to commemorate the Aceh tsunami and this monument not only reminds us of the enormity of the tsunami disaster, but also emphasizes the importance of awareness and preparedness for natural disasters if they suddenly come.
The arrangement of the Tsunami Site of Ships on Top of Houses located in Lampulo Village was initiated by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Aceh Geological Agency, and was officially approved as the Aceh Tsunami Site. This monument is widely visited by local and foreign tourists to learn the story from another side about the tragedy that hit Aceh 18 years ago.
The Lampulo Tsunami Ship Monument is open to the public, and what's more interesting is that there is no entrance fee to this area, it's free for all tourists, only we pay a parking fee of IDR 10,000 for 4-wheeled vehicles, and only IDR 5,000 for those bringing 2-wheeled vehicles. As for the schedule of visiting guests to this monument, it is open from Monday to Sunday.
This monument has a large parking area, making it comfortable for visitors who bring 4-wheeled vehicles, and the distance to the parking location is very close, only walking about 10 meters from the parking lot to the monument, so for those of us who bring parents do not make them tired walking to reach the monument area.
As soon as you enter the monument area, there is a bulletin board containing various information about the ship that was stranded on the roof of the house. In addition, if we visit this monument, we will be greeted by a local guide who knows a lot about the ins and outs of the tsunami tragedy that resulted in the fishing boat being stranded on the roof of a resident's house in the village. He will explain in detail about the story of the ship, and we can also ask further questions about the story.
In addition to the local guide who gave us a lot of information about the "Ship Above the House" there was also the caretaker of the incident who was a local villager who was saved by the ship when the big waves swept away all the buildings around, on the ship he saved himself and floated with the ship in the big tsunami waves. He is often called by the name "Wak Kolak",
Wak Kolak is one of the keys to the history of the tsunami tragedy that is still alive today, when the tsunami occurred he was 55 years old. Wak Kolak was saved by the stranded fishing boat and he climbed into the boat to save himself, he was one of the residents of Lampulo Village who survived with the boat, and was tossed around with the boat by the big tsunami waves until the tsunami receded.
Apart from "Wak Kolak", there is another person who is the key keeper of the tragedy who is also one of the survivors of the terrible waves of the tsunami, namely the one who is usually called "Mak Nong", she is also one of the residents of Lampulo who survived the terrible waves of the tsunami.
Mak Nong survived and experienced firsthand how terrible the big tsunami waves were. He is still alive today so he is a key witness to the tsunami tragedy that hit Aceh at that time. The story of Mak Nong is different, who fought against the big tsunami waves not only to save himself, but he also fought to save his son who was 10 years old at that time, and his son is still alive today.
Mak Nong told us a lot about her struggle to survive the huge tsunami waves, the feeling of resignation and helplessness was in her at that time, and the great desire to save the life of her 10-year-old child was embedded in her at that time, only prayers to God that she always shouted when the waves rolled, and continuous efforts to save the lives of herself and her 10-year-old child.
The story experienced by Mak Nong was truly astonishing when we heard it, she struggled to save herself from the great tsunami disaster, a feeling of sadness was engraved in our hearts when we heard her story, a feeling of despair sometimes arose in her heart when she was still in the tsunami waves, but she still tried to save herself and her child who was only 10 years old.
Hearing the story from someone who experienced it firsthand was really shocking and also sad for us to hear, the story was more profound than the story we got when we visited the Aceh Tsunami Museum before. The story of the incident from Mak Nong was so real and we listened to it for hours.
Mak Nong's facial expression when telling the story reflected the deep sorrow still in Mak Nong's heart regarding the terrible tsunami natural disaster, it really touched our hearts when we heard it directly from someone who experienced the incident.
After listening to Mak Nong's true story, we tried to climb to the top of the monument via the available access route to take a closer look at the intact ship's hull. From above, it was clearly visible that this was a fishing boat owned by a local resident, which has now become a Tsunami Monument full of tragic stories.
The house where the ship sat has now become a museum and inside it there are several documents about the tsunami, and the names of the victims of the tsunami natural disaster are clearly written on the information board inside the ship monument house.
When entering the first room, we will find hundreds of names displayed on the information board. These names are the names of the villagers who were victims of the tsunami, both those whose bodies were found and those whose bodies were not found at all.
The room is not that spacious, it is still the basic room of the original house, an old-style minimalist house with rooms that look narrow.
Then we moved on to the next room, in that room there were many documentation photos of the aftermath of the tsunami, from there we could see the condition of the Banda Aceh area after being hit by the big waves of the tsunami, and the residents who were still left were very few as seen in the documentation photos, there were even residents who were busy going around looking for their families after being separated while running away from the tsunami waves.
The tsunami disaster in Aceh on December 26, 2004 was one of the greatest tragedies in the history of Indonesia in general, and the history of Aceh in particular. The tsunami waves caused by the 9.1–9.3 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra destroyed thousands of buildings, infrastructure, and caused many fatalities in Banda Aceh and its surroundings. Almost all houses and buildings in the area were completely destroyed, and many houses only had their foundations left.
Around the Lampulo Tsunami Ship Monument area there are several sevenir shops, for those of you who visit here and want to collect souvenirs typical of Aceh in the souvenir shop provides various types of souvenirs that we can buy for a typical Aceh collection. In addition, there are also book sellers about Aceh, Aceh History, Aceh Traditions, and even books related to the Aceh tsunami tragedy, entitled "Nestapa Tsunami Aceh", Uniquely, one of the sources of the book is "Wak Kolak", who is the caretaker of the Lampulo Tsunami Ship Monument. Well, if you are not satisfied with the story told directly by Wak Kolak when visiting the monument, you can also read the book "Nestapa Tsunami Aceh", because Wak Kolak also tells a lot in the book.
The story of the Aceh tsunami, which was Aceh's nightmare that was so real, is not only about tragedy, but also about resilience, revival, solidarity, and inspiration for many people. This disaster provides many lessons and inspirations that can be taken for everyday life, both in terms of humanity, courage, and efforts to rebuild life after being devastated by disaster.
The resilience of the Acehnese people in the face of this tragedy is an inspiration to many people around the world. The loss of family members, homes, and livelihoods did not make them give up. They rose and together they rebuilt a better life.
There are many individual stories of incredible courage, such as fishermen who saved themselves and others with their boats, or mothers who protected their children as huge waves hit. Other stories are of families who were separated but who remained hopeful and tried to find each other years after the disaster. Some were reunited, showing the power of love and hope. The Aceh tsunami reminded us of the incredible power of nature and the helplessness of humans in the face of it. This disaster taught humans to appreciate nature more, to understand that we are only a small part of a very large ecosystem, and the importance of maintaining environmental balance.
On the other hand, the Aceh Tsunami also had a positive impact in terms of peace. Before the tsunami, Aceh experienced a prolonged conflict between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian government. However, after the disaster, both parties saw the need for cooperation to restore Aceh, which eventually led to the signing of the Helsinki peace agreement in 2005, this was like a great blessing from God after the disaster.
The story of the Aceh tsunami is a reminder of the power of humankind to survive, rise, and unite in the face of adversity. From this tragedy, many valuable lessons can be learned to face life's challenges, strengthen solidarity, and keep hope alive.
The Aceh Tsunami reminded us of the incredible power of nature and the helplessness of humans before it. This disaster taught humans to appreciate nature more, to understand that we are only a small part of a very large ecosystem, and the importance of maintaining environmental balance.
Hopefully, our travel story can be useful for everyone, citing the miracle behind the incident, spreading kindness, and inspiring us all to understand nature, and learn from the humans before us.
