Balwearie Road along Windygate to the Mill Dam

in Worldmappinlast month

Hello Hello Hivers, Hivians and any other wonderful being who has stumbled onto this!

Welcome to the last Wednesday in October in 2025! Wowsers it will be 2026 soon!

The weather was gorgeous last weekend and so we are going on a walk from Saturday, well the first part of it anyway lol!

Balwearie Road along Windygate to the Mill Dam.png

We headed to the park, but instead of walking inside Beveridge Park we walked along Balwearie Road towards the ...

image.png

... Kirkcaldy Golf Club!

image.png

We did not go there, instead we hung a right onto the path known as Windygate.

image.png

You take the high road and I'll take the ....

image.png

... high road as well!

You have said the low road, but no Scotsman or Scotswoman for that matter would say the low road...

Do you know why not?

image.png

So if we go left, we get to Aucertool and we do go past a lovely wee ruined castle.

However we are taking the high road!

This is a new sign by the way.

You might recall we had a royal visit in the summer. Well for it they replaced lots of things, so this is a new sign.

It is a pity they have to wait for a visit from the King to do this sort of thing.

Perhaps if they stopped giving themselves pay rises etc and actually did things for the community like they are voted into do, then things might be better! Just fluffing saying!

image.png

O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road, And I'll be in Scotland afore ye

So here is a wee bit about this line from the folk song The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond

The Significance of the Low Road
The low road represents the route of the soul or the spirit returning home:

The Spiritual Journey (The Low Road): According to an old Celtic tradition or piece of Scottish folklore, if a Scot dies in a foreign land (i.e., outside of Scotland), their spirit will take a swift, underground, or mystical path—the low road—back to their homeland. This journey is instantaneous.

The Earthly Journey (The High Road): The friend who is set free will take the slow, winding, conventional physical road—the high road—back to Scotland.

So you don't really want to take the low road as you are dead, hence I said I will take the high road too!

There is so much more to it than this, as it was all to do with the Jacobite Risings particularly in 1745 when supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie were captured and executed. Their heads were cut off and stuck on pikes on the high roads for all to see. Their relatives would walk on the low roads to avoid seeing them!

Right this is meant to be a walk in the Autumn sunshine not a history lesson so let's carry on!

Peekaboo

You can just see the 18th green on the golf course with the red flag marking the hole.

Magical Autumn

image.png

There is not much more of a relaxing thing to do that stroll through the woods on a sunny Autumn day.

image.png

What do you think?

image.png

Autumn means colours!

image.png

These fields are full of wheat in the summer, but that has all been harvested now.

image.png

I love this clump of trees and often you see pheasants flying out from there.

image.png

It is also where a couple of horses graze.

Do you the wee horse?

image.png

Back to our high road!

image.png

Beware the dog 💩 under the leaves! Too many dog owners think it is okay not to pick up their dog's crap as there are leaves to hide it! I would ram their faces in it if I caught them.

image.png

But we are here, and I will break this walk into two or maybe three posts!

image.png

I just love the greens and blues. There is something about natural light that makes everything okay!

image.png

So here we are at the old mill damn and this is where we will finish for today!

image.png

The fallen leaves giving the woods a magical carpet!

This post is for #wednesdaywalk which was inspired by @tattoodjay

Thanks for visiting and I hope you managed to get out for a walk this week.

lovely wee walk! And some interesting info about the low road, I never knew the meaning of it before, so an interesting lesson learnt today! I'll need to get through to the park this weekend with the doggo and enjoy some of those colours before they all fade to mushy brownish grey!

Yeah avoid that low road lol! hehe the mush gets on the ground soon with all these wet leaves. Lots of dogs and there walkers that day all around Raith lake which was unusual.

You are very welcome @tengolotodo! it was well deserved. ☀️
We are already looking forward to reading more about your adventures!

What? Do you seriously do that? I love walking over dry leaves, I like listening to the sound they make under my feet. Congratulations because the Rangers won again. A good sign. An autumn hug, Ed.

Yes this was the start of the walk on Saturday that took about five hours lol! Was cold but beautifully sunny and yes it is fun walking over dry leaves!
Rangers well the new manager has got confidence in the players. But this weekend is what counts, the semifinal of the cup against the dreaded enemy Celtic. So blue blue and blue this weekend Nancy, a big warm hug

Wow, I'd call this a magical walk because all photos are fluffy captivating and mesmerizing. 😍

What a horrible story about the natives that executed and their heads hung on the high roads. I can imagine how broken the family were back then. Thank goodness for civilization, most of these horrible events are almost non existent.

Thanks for sharing your walk, I enjoyed reading it.

Oh yes our past is littered with monstrous acts towards each other!
There are still far too many atrocities around the world that people conveniently choose to ignore!
It was a fun walk and guess what ....
Could not see the sky to see if any clouds haha that was today!

Wow, this looks like a beautiful walk! I probably would have taken the high road as well, but missing out on seeing an old castle would have been hard for me!

One thing about the UK and Scotland in particular was that any lord / laird of the manor could have a big house and call it a castle. They were not all big and grand..
Let me see what you would have seen ...
ok this is it when we last saw in 2024

It doesn't take much to impress me. That's pretty sweet!

Hehe I love them, probably helps with Mrs T putting things in to perspective and how lucky we are, when we have things like that all over the place.

So lucky!
