🗺 Into the Wild – Two Days in the Mexican Woods without Phone Signal and WiFi [EN/DE]

Have you ever spent the night in a hut in the forest, without an internet connection and far away from human settlements? That was exactly the plan my girlfriend and I had for our road trip in the south-east of Mexico City. As we are both location-independent and work from home or while travelling, we are online pretty much 24/7. So we saw it as a challenge to disconnect and live offline for two days. In this post, I'll tell you about the impressions we gathered while doing so.

Habt ihr schon mal in einer Hütte im Wald ohne Internet-Verbindung und fernab von menschlichen Siedlungen übernachtet? Genau das war der Plan, den meine Freundin und ich für unseren Roadtrip südöstlich von Mexiko Stadt hatten. Da wir beide ortsunabhängig sind und auf Reisen oder von zuhause aus arbeiten, sind wir so gut wie 24/7 online. Wir sahen es also als Herausforderung an, mal abzuschalten und zwei Tage lang offline zu leben. Welche Eindrücke wir dabei gesammelt haben, erzähle ich euch in diesem Beitrag.

Already the journey to our accommodation in the forests around Malinalco was a challenge. The deeper we drove into the wilderness, the narrower and more impassable the roads became. At times, we couldn't even make progress at walking pace and had to drive over large stones and through deep mud puddles. An off-road vehicle would probably have made things a lot easier, but our car held out bravely, even if you could clearly see the strain in its appearance at the end.

Eine Herausforderung stellte bereits die Anreise zu unserer Unterkunft in den Wäldern um Malinalco dar. Je tiefer wir in die Wildnis vordrungen, desto schmaler und unwegsamer wurden die Straßen. Zeitweise kamen wir nicht einmal im Schritttempo voran und mussten über große Steine, sowie durch tiefe Schlamm-Pfützen fahren. Ein Geländerwagen hätte wohl einiges erleichtert, aber unser Auto hielt tapfer durch, auch wenn man ihm die Strapazen am Ende deutlich ansah.

Now we continued on foot. Our host's son picked us up and we were able to pack our luggage into his wheelbarrow. We marched through the dense vegetation, past exotic plants and banana trees. After about twenty minutes we reached our hut, which was next to a small stream and surrounded by large trees. We were then given a radio for emergencies. It was to be our only possible connection to the outside world.

Nun ging es zu Fuß weiter. Der Sohn unseres Vermieters holte uns ab und wir konnten unser Gepäck in seine Schubkarre laden. So marschierten wir durch die dichte Vegetation, vorbei an exotischen Pflanzen und Bananenbäumen. Nach ungefähr zwanzig Minuten erreichen wir dann unsere Hütte, die sich neben einem kleinen Bach und umgeben von großen Bäumen befand. Dann bekamen wir ein Funkgerät für den Notfall ausgehändigt. Es sollte unsere einzig mögliche Verbindung zur Außenwelt sein.

Our hut was really brilliantly furnished. We found a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a large shower, washbasin and toilet, a living room with a large sofa bed, a desk and dining table with two chairs and a cosy double bed on the second floor. It's unbelievable how efficiently you can utilise even such a small space. Thanks to the huge glass fronts, the hut was also very bright during the day. We were even provided with board and card games and a box for our smartphones. However, we needed these at least to take photos and capture our memories.

Unsere Hütte war wirklich genial eingerichtet. Auf nur schätzungsweise 3x4m2 fanden wir eine voll ausgestattete Küche, ein Badezimmer mit großer Dusche, Waschbecken und WC, Ein Wohnzimmer mit einer großen Schlafcouch, einen Schreib- und Esstisch mit zwei Sesseln und quasi im zweiten Stock ein gemütliches Doppelbett vor. Unglaublich, wie effizient man selbst so einen kleinen Raum nutzen kann. Durch die riesigen Glasfronten, war die Hütte auch tagsüber sehr hell. Man stellte uns sogar Brett- und Kartenspiele, sowie eine Box für unsere Smartphones bereit. Die Handys brauchten wir jedoch zumindest, um Fotos zu schießen und unsere Erinnerungen somit festzuhalten.

And the next challenge was already waiting for us. We wanted to barbecue over an open fire, even though neither of us had any experience. Fortunately, we were able to contact the friendly boy again. He helped us light the fire. But we were on our own for the barbecue. Unbelievable, but we actually managed to cook meat, cactus leaves and tortillas on the barbecue. It was completely unfamiliar for us, but in the end it was a great feeling to have mastered this challenge. We also attracted a visitor. The boy's dog waited patiently for the leftover meat.

Und schon wartete die nächste Herausforderung auf uns. Wir wollten auf offenem Feuer grillen, obwohl wir beide keine Erfahrung darin hatten. Zum Glück konnten wir den freundlichen Jungen nochmals kontaktieren. Er half uns, das Feuer zu entfachen. Beim Grillen waren wir dann aber auf uns allein gestellt. Unfassbar, aber wir schafften es tatsächlich, Fleisch, Kaktusblätter und Tortillas auf dem Grill zuzubereiten. Es war zwar für uns völlig ungewohnt, doch schlussendlich ein tolles Gefühl, diese Herausforderung gemeistert zu haben. Wir lockten auch einen Besucher an. Der Hund des Jungen wartete geduldig auf die Fleischreste, die übrig blieben.

Until nightfall, we explored the area a little more and caught a few tiny fish from the stream. We spent the evening playing the games provided and prepared a tortilla pizza in the kitchen of our hut. When we went to bed, it was a strange feeling to hear the sounds of the night around us. Occasionally we also heard an animal crawling on the roof. I wonder what it was.

Bis zum Anbruch der Dunkelheit erkundeten wir die Umgebung noch ein bisschen und fingen ein paar winzige Fische aus dem Bach. Den Abend verbrachten wir mit den bereitgestellten Spielen und bereiteten eine Tortilla-Pizza in der Küche unserer Hütte zu. Als wir zu Bett gingen, war es ein komisches Gefühl, die Geräusche der Nacht um uns herum zu hören. Zwischendurch hörten wir auch ein Tier auf dem Dach krabbeln. Was es wohl war?

The next day, it was unusual but nice for us to wake up surrounded by nature. We spotted numerous animals such as blue dragonflies and salamanders sunbathing on our roof. In the late afternoon, we were picked up again and walked back to the car. Our digital detox trip was a truly unique experience for us. We definitely want to repeat it and be offline for at least two nights next time. If you have a similar lifestyle and are constantly online, I can only warmly recommend that you try this experience, immerse yourself in the wilderness and simply disconnect for some time.

Am nächsten Tag war es ungewohntes, aber schön, umgeben von der Natur aufzuwachen. Wir entdeckten zahlreiche Tiere, wie blaue Libellen oder Salamander, die sich auf unserem Dach sonnten. Am späten Nachmittag wurden wir dann wieder abgeholt und es ging zu Fuß zurück zum Auto. Unser Digital-Detox-Trip war eine wirklich einzigartige Erfahrung für uns. Wir wollen ihn unbedingt wiederholen und das nächste Mal zumindest zwei Nächte lang offline sein. Falls ihr einen ähnlichen Lebensstil führt und ständig online seid, kann ich euch nur wärmstens empfehlen, eimal diese Erfahrung zu machen, in die Wildnis einzutauchen und einfach mal abzuschalten.
