Hey guys! In the last post, I already told you about the highlight of the Mexican city of Toluca. Today I'm going to tell you about the second reason why my girlfriend and I spent a whole weekend in the capital of the state of Mexico. It was because the annual rock and metal festival "Hell & Heaven" was taking place there. Just read on if you want to know if a festival like this is worth a visit.
Hallo Leute! Im letzten Beitrag habe ich euch bereits über das Highlight der mexikansichen Stadt Toluca berichtet. Heute erzähle ich euch vom zweiten Grund, warum meine Freundin und ich ein ganzes Wochenende in der Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Mexiko verbrachten. Dort fand nämlich das alljährliche Rock- und Metal-Festival "Hell & Heaven" statt. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr wissen wollt, ob ein derartiges Festival einen Besuch wert ist.
Mexico and rock? Do they even go together? You would rather associate other music genres with a Latin American country, wouldn't you? But the reality is different. Rock and metal are very popular in Mexico, which is why there are so many concerts and festivals of that genre. Hell & Heaven takes place every year at the beginning of November at the Foro Pegaso, Toluca's race track. Due to its size, this venue is perfect for the event. We felt welcome right from the start and curiously explored the many attractions.
Mexiko und Rock? Passt das überhaupt zusammen? Man würde doch eher andere Musikrichtungen mit einem lateinamerikanischen Land verbinden, oder? Doch die Realität sieht anders aus. Rock und Metal sind in Mexiko sehr populär und deshalb gibt es auch jede Menge entsprechende Konzerte und Festivals. Das Hell & Heaven findet jährlich Anfang November auf dem Foro Pegaso, der Rennstrecke von Toluca statt. Durch seine Größe eignet sich dieser Ort perfekt für die Veranstaltung. Wir fühlten uns von Anfang an wohl und erkundeten neugierig die vielen Attraktionen.
We began by exploring the countless stalls and were amazed by the creativity and bizarre nature of many of the products. You can see some of them in the photos above. The sheer variety of crazy things for sale made the visit worthwhile already. But that wasn't all there was to discover apart from the concerts on the five stages.
Zu Beginn erkundeten wir gleich die unzähligen Verkaufsstände und waren begeistert von der Kreativität und Skurrilität vieler Produkte. Einige davon seht ihr in den Fotos oberhalb. Allein aufgrund dieser Vielfalt an verrückten Dingen, die zum Verkauf standen, zahlte sich der Besuch eigentlich schon aus. Doch das war noch lange nicht alles, was es abseits der Konzerte auf den insgesamt fünf Bühnen zu entdecken gab.
For example, there was the medieval area, which had its own stalls and attractions. Here, for example, you could try your hand at medieval sword fighting with foam swords. We were also fascinated by the many festival visitors dressed up in medieval costumes. One thing, we couldn't resist, was the opportunity to hold a giant raven (I didn't know there were ravens that big) on our arms. Fortunately, we were also able to take some photos with this beautiful animal.
Da wäre zum Beispiel der Mittelalter-Bereich, der über seine eigenen Verkaufsstände und Attraktionen verfügte. Hier konnte man sich zum Beispiel im mittelalterlichen Schwertkampf mit Schaumstoff-Schwertern versuchen. Fasziniert haben uns auch die vielen mittelalterlich verkleideten Festival-Besucher. Bei der Möglichkeit, einen riesigen Raben (ich wusste nicht, dass es so große Raben gibt) auf dem Arm zu halten, konnten wir nicht widerstehen. Zum Glück konnten wir auch einige Fotos mit diesem wunderschönen Tier machen.
It was particularly cozy to sit down on the huge meadows with a cool drink and enjoy the festival atmosphere. We also saw a few lesser-known bands while feeling the warm afternoon sun on our faces. The prices for drinks were very reasonable. We paid 50 pesos for a non-alcoholic drink and 160 pesos for three quarters of a liter of beer, which was the equivalent of just over €2 and around €8.5. Payment was cashless, using a chip directly on the entrance wristband, which you had to charge first. We found this uncomplicated and convenient.
Besonders gemütlich war es, sich auf den riesigen Wiesen mit einem kühlen Getränk niederzulassen und die Festival-Stimmung zu genießen. So sahen wir auch ein paar unbekanntere Bands, während wir die warme Nachmittagssonne auf unsereren Gesichtern spürten. Die Preise für Getränke waren sehr in Ordnung. für ein alkoholfreies Getränk bezahlten wir 50 Pesos und für einen dreiviertel Liter Bier 160 Pesos, was umgerechnet etwas über 2€ und ca. 8,5€ entsprach. Bezahlt wurde bargeldlos, mittels eines Chips direkt am Eintritts-Armband, den man zuerst aufladen musste. Dies empfanden wir als unkompliziert und komfortabel.
The low prices continued with the food. The selection here was huge and there was no shortage of Mexican specialties in particular. The quality of the food was also really good. There was also a separate area for children with lots of games and a small stage where a puppeteer performed. We also saw a medieval parade that marched across the grounds. In total, the festival lasted three full days, from midday until well after midnight. Fortunately, we had the opportunity to take advantage of the full three days.
Die günstigen Preise setzten sich bei den Speisen fort. Hier war die Auswahl riesig und besonders an mexikanischen Spezialitäten mangelte es nicht. Auch qualitativ war das Essen echt in Ordnung. Auch für Kinder gab es einen eigenen Bereich mit vielen Spielmöglichkeiten und einer kleinen Bühne auf der ein Puppenspieler auftrat. Außerdem sahen wir eine mittelalterliche Parade, die über das Gelände zog. Insgesamt dauerte das Festival drei volle Tage, jeweils von Mittags bis weit nach Mitternacht. Wir hatten zum Glück die Möglichkeit, die vollen drei Tage auszunutzen.
The sunset atmosphere was particularly beautiful, especially with the mountain panorama in the background. We could also clearly see the Nevado de Toluca. As the city of Toluca is located at over 2,600 m above sea level, the drop in temperature after sunset should not be underestimated. After daytime highs of 25°C and more, the temperature dropped to around 5°C at night. We were glad we had taken our winter jackets with us. But of course the bands also really heated up the atmosphere. Among others, we saw Muse, Slipknot and Bad Omens.
Die Sonnenuntergangsstimmung war besonders schön, vor allem mit dem Bergpanorama im Hintergrund. Auch den Nevado de Toluca konnten wir klar erkennen. Da die Stadt Toluca auf über 2.600m Seehöhe liegt, sollte man den Temperatursturz nach Sonnenuntergang dort nicht zu unterschätzen. Nach Tageshöchtswerten von 25°C und mehr, sank die Temperatur in der Nacht bis auf ca. 5°C. Wir waren froh, unsere Winterjacken mitgenommen zu haben. Doch natürlich heizten auch die Bands die Atmosphäre ordentlich auf. Unter anderem sahen wir Muse, Slipknot und Bad Omens.
To cut a long story short, my first rock festival in Mexico was simply brilliant! The atmosphere was excellent and, I don't want to leave this unmentioned, everything was extremely peaceful and civilized. I couldn't find any disadvantages compared to festivals in Europe. I really hope to get the opportunity to take part in such an event again soon. Mexico and metal is not a contradiction, but a combination that rocks!
Um es kurz zu machen, mein erstes Rock-Festival in Mexiko war einfach nur genial! Die Stimmung war ausgezeichnet und, das möchte ich nicht unerwähnt lassen, es lief alles extrem friedlich und zivilisiert ab. Nachteile gegenüber Festivals in Europa konnte ich keine finden. Ich hoffe sehr, wieder mal die Gelegenheit zu bekommen, an einem solchen Event teilzunehmen. Mexiko und Metal ist kein Widerspruch, sondern eine Kombination die rockt!
