St Nicholas Greek-Catholic Cathedral in Oradea, Romania

Hello dear visitors

I couldn't leave Oradea without sharing with you yet another place that I consider a must visit if you come to Oradea.

And yes, we will go together to see St. Nicholas Greek-Catholic Cathedral.
In Oradea there are many such places to visit and I have chosen this time to present this cathedral.

We got there very quickly as the cathedral is located right in the center very close to the town hall.

When I got there I was pleasantly surprised as I entered through a gate when I saw the very well landscaped inner courtyard, lots of beautiful flowers, but let's see what it looks like.

The cathedral was built between 1800-1810 on the site of an older church that had existed there since the second third of the 18th century. After the founding of the Greek-Catholic Diocese of Oradea, the modest edifice no longer met the needs of the new ecclesiastical institutions and was replaced by the present cathedral.

The construction work was initiated by Bishop Ignate Darabant and completed by Bishop Samuel Vulcan. Initially the cathedral had a tower similar to the Church of the Moon, which fell victim to fire in 1836.

The iconostasis is a piece of great decorative value. In the Byzantine tradition, it is divided into three sumptuously decorated registers. The central painting, The Descent from the Cross, is inspired by the work of Rembrandt. The two monumental gilded gilded tripods with portraits of Empress Maria Theresa and Joseph II, topped by medallions of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, are particularly remarkable decorative pieces. They are designed in the artistic spirit of the Viennese court, using the decorative props of the Zopf style.

Let's go inside.

Hey @triplug you are welcome.
Thanks for using @worldmappin

This is beautiful
I just wonder how building of this nature exist for so long a number of years and nothing happens to it. Nice structures

Thank you very much for stopping by, and yes, the resistance of these buildings to the passage of time is also due to the quality of the materials used but also to the skill of those who built them.
