The Church on the Hill and the mysterious Crypt under the Altar in Sighișoara, Romania

20240302_140629.jpg

Hello my beautiful followers

Today I want to make a continuation of my last post, namely if in the last post I introduced you to the Covered Stairway, that construction built in 1642 that served the children who went to school on the hill to be protected from the bad weather (rain, snow, wind) today we will go together to the School Hill where I want to visit a place with an equally spectacular history.

Yes today we are visiting the Church on the Hill, it can be easily seen from almost all over the city of Sighișoara, once you arrive on the School Hill the same and from here you can have a view over the city of Sighișoara.

After we climbed the stairs being a little tired we chose to take a rest break in a small park near the church, sitting there on the bench I quietly observed the beauty of the outside of the church, as if suddenly an energy came from I don't know where and pushed me to go inside the church.

That's what I did, after I went through the front door a wave of cold air hit me in the face (I had the impression that I had changed continents), I forgot to tell you that it was around 15 degrees outside and in the church it was only a few degrees.

On the left side immediately after we entered is the ticket office, but it seems that here you pay a visitor's fee that cost 10lei/2euro/person, a very small amount compared to what we are about to see.

Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Sunday between 10-17, on Mondays it is closed, from what the guide told us, there are no more services here but only for important events, remaining open only for tourists.

At the entrance we received a paper with all the information about this church but even after a few minutes here we gathered more tourists and the lady at the entrance (the guide) offered to present us the history of the church (for free).

It was deathly quiet in the church, and when the lady started to give us the history of the church I really got goosebumps, it was so nice to hear what the guide was saying without a microphone, everyone here seemed mesmerized.

The church was built on the top of the hill here being the highest point (429m) in those times the church and the school had the same importance this is the reason why on the School Hill there is both school and church.

From what the guide told us, it seems that every family in the village had a wooden crate full of provisions that was put in the attic of the church (this is where food could be kept for longer), and when the village was attacked all the people in the village took shelter in the church (don't imagine that the village was as populated as it is today).

20240302_132502.jpg

In the attic of the church only the head of the family went up and only once a week so the head of the family had to know very well his family members and especially to know how much food they needed for a week, you realize that in those crates food was stored for a longer period of time.

A very important thing seems to me that these crates were made of hardwood and no iron nails were used to make them, only wooden nails of the same hardwood.

I leave here some pictures of those crates where people in the village kept their supplies, one of these crates is over 550 years old.

Let's not get carried away in presenting this amazing place, so in what follows we will descend a few narrow stairs leading down to the crypt beneath the church altar.

Do you have the courage to enter another world together?

In the crypt under the altar were buried the most important people of the village, from priests to mayors and other important people.

Once in the Crypt we see that most of the tombs have been covered, leaving only two of them visible.
