A trip to Croatia: discovering Pula [EN - IT] 🇭🇷

Here in #Italy the Christmas holidays are over, and now it's back to work.... The weather is cold and because of Covid19 we are all staying home for the umpteenth time.... It's not a nice situation but by we have to live like this...

Qui in #Italia sono finite le feste di Natale, e ora si torna a lavoro.. Il clima è freddo e per via del Covid19 stiamo tutti a casa per l'ennesima volta.. Non è una bella situazione ma ormai ci siamo abituati..

I often find myself thinking about the good old days, when you could do anything, go anywhere, travel and see beautiful destinations, just as I was thinking about this I was reminded of the wonderful trip I took some time ago to Pula, a beautiful town in the heart of #Croatia and so I decided to tell you about this adventure.

Mi ritrovo spesso a pensare ai bei tempi, a quando si poteva fare tutto, andare in giro, viaggiare e vedere stupende mete, proprio mentre pensavo a questo mi è tornato in mente lo stupendo viaggio che ho fatto qualche tempo fa a Pola, una bellissima cittadina nel cuore della #Croazia e quindi ho deciso di raccontarvi questa avventura.

THE JOURNEY
Also this time we had chosen to go by car, for various reasons, the car is very convenient because then you can move freely around the city and you do not need to rent other means.
The trip was very long, even though Google Maps says it takes a little over 5 hours it took us longer.

IL VIAGGIO
Anche questa volta avevamo scelto di andare in macchina, per varie ragioni, l'automobile è molto comoda perché poi puoi spostarti liberamente per la città e non hai bisogno di affittare altri mezzi.
Il viaggio è stato molto lungo, anche se Google Maps dice che ci vogliono poco più di 5 ore ce ne abbiamo messe di più.

We left from my city, Forlì and arrived in about 7.5 hours, the traffic in the summer on the roads is really heavy, however all those hours pass quickly if you are with the right company. 😁
I did this trip with my girlfriend and we listened to so much great music, it was the first such long trip we did together and we didn't get bored.

Siamo partiti dalla mia città, Forlì e siamo arrivati in circa 7,5 ore, il traffico d'estate sulle strade è davvero molto intenso, però tutte quelle ore passano in fretta se sei con la giusta compagnia. 😁
Ho fatto questo viaggio con la mia ragazza e abbiamo ascoltato tantissima bella musica, era il primo viaggio così lungo che facevamo assieme e non ci siamo annoiati.

The landscape is really incredible, especially when you leave Italy and arrive in #Slovenia, there are endless forests and endless green hills, you cross small characteristic villages with very few inhabitants... Truly breathtaking scenery.... I was almost sad that I had to drive so I couldn't fully enjoy it.
I do recommend refueling as soon as you leave Italy though because: few inhabitants also means few gas stations, so fill up!!! 🇭🇷

The trip still went very well, we arrived at our apartment in the early afternoon, just in time to start exploring the place a bit.

Il paesaggio è davvero incredibile, soprattutto quando esci dall'Italia e arrivi i #Slovenia, li ci sono infiniti boschi e infinite colline verdi, si attraversano piccoli paesini caratteristici con pochissimi abitanti.. Uno scenario davvero mozzafiato.. Ero quasi triste di dover guidare per non poter godermi del tutto la situazione.
Però vi consiglio di fare rifornimento appena usciti dall'Italia perché: pochi abitanti vuol dire anche pochi distributori di benzina, quindi rifornite!!! 🇭🇷
Il viaggio è comunque andato molto bene, siamo arrivati al nostro appartamento nel primo pomeriggio, giusto in tempo per cominciare ad esplorare un po il luogo.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Pula is an inhabited center founded in the Bronze Age under the name of Pula, then became the capital and largest center of the Histrians changing its name to Nesactium.
The city was conquered by the Romans in 177 BC and renamed Pietas Iulia. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
The city was annexed to the Republic of Venice in 1148, remaining in its maritime domains for almost five centuries, and then was annexed to the Austrian Empire.
It remained under direct Austrian control until 1918, when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, and then passed to Yugoslavia in 1947 and finally, in 1991, to Croatia.
The composition of the population of Pula changed over the centuries, especially after the world wars which were followed by the exodus of the majority of the Italian population.
Today the majority of Pula's citizens are Croatian and Slovenian.
Pula has an industrial fabric formed mainly by shipbuilding, manufacturing industries, food industries, construction industries and metallurgical industries.

UN PO DI STORIA
Pola è un centro abitato fondato nell'età del bronzo con il nome di Pola, divenne poi capitale e massimo centro degli Istri cambiando denominazione in Nesactium.
La città fu conquistata dagli antichi Romani nel 177 a.C., fu ridenominata Pietas Iulia. Dopo la caduta dell'Impero romano d'Occidente.
La città fu annessa alla Repubblica di Venezia nel 1148, rimanendo nei suoi domini marittimi per quasi cinque secoli, per poi essere annessa all'Impero austriaco.
Rimase sotto il diretto controllo austriaco fino al 1918, quando fu annessa al Regno d'Italia, per poi passare nel 1947 alla Jugoslavia e infine, nel 1991, alla Croazia.
La composizione della popolazione di Pola cambiò nei secoli, soprattutto dopo le guerre mondiali a cui seguì l'esodo della gran parte della popolazione italiana.
Oggi la maggioranza dei cittadini di Pola è croata e slovena.
Pola ha un tessuto industriale formato principalmente da cantieristica navale, industrie manifatturiere, industrie alimentari, industrie edili e industrie metallurgiche.

DISCOVERING POLA

Pula is located on the Adriatic Sea and is part of Croatia, its eastern borders are traditionally indicated by the chain of the Julian Alps and the Gulf of Kvarner, which is also referred to by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy.
The city spreads over seven hills like Rome:

• Castello,
• Zaro,
• San Michel,
• Castagner,
• Monte Ghiro,
• San Martin,
• Monte Paradiso.

SCOPRIAMO POLA
Pola è situata SULLA adriatica e fa parte della Croazia, i suoi confini orientali tradizionalmente si indicano solitamente la catena delle Alpi Giulie e il Golfo del Quarnaro, a cui fa riferimento anche Dante Alighieri nella Divina Commedia.
La città si estende su sette colli come Roma:
• Castello,
• Zaro,
• San Michel,
• Castagner,
• Monte Ghiro,
• San Martin,
• Monte Paradiso.

The area over which the municipality of Pula extends is about 52 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers of land and 10 square kilometers of sea surface, bordered by some uninhabited islets:

• San Girolamo,
• Cosada,
• Veruda.
  In the place where the city was founded, a well-protected port was built and opened to the northeast thanks to two inlets, one to the sea and the other to the Fažana canal.

L'area su cui si estende il comune di Pola misura circa 52 km quadrati, di cui 42 km quadrati di terra e 10 km quadrati di superficie marina, costeggiata da alcuini isolotti disabitati:
• San Girolamo,
• Cosada,
• Veruda.
Nel punto in cui è sorta la città è stato realizzato un porto ben protetto e aperto verso nord est grazie a due imbocchi, uno verso il mare e l'altro verso il canale di Fasana.

The city is protected from the cold winds coming from the North thanks to the chain of the Alps, and also thanks to the presence of the sea.
Pula has a humid subtropical climate with pleasant temperatures in summer and not too freezing in winter, a truly perfect climate!
Summers are often hot during the day and relatively cool in the evening, with some daily heat peaks in the period in which we were there.

La città è protetta dai venti freddi provenienti da Nord grazie alla catena delle Alpi, grazie anche alla presenza del mare.
Pola ha un clima subtropicale umido con temperature gradevoli d'estate e non troppo gelide d'inverno, un clima davvero perfetto!
Le estati sono spesso calde durante il giorno e relativamente fresche alla sera, con alcuni picchi di caldo giornalieri proprio nel periodo in cui siamo stati noi.

The average summer temperature is +23 °C during July and August, while in winter it is +6 °C during January and February, with 240 days a year where the temperature is above +10 °C.
There are three winds that blow over Pula:

• Bora (cold katabatic wind from the east/northeast that blows in winter with particular intensity)
• Sirocco (warm wind from the south-east that brings rain).
• Mistral (summer wind blowing from the sea towards the inland).

La temperatura media d'estate è di +23 °C durante Luglio e Agosto, mentre in inverno è di +6 °C durante Gennaio e Febbraio, con 240 giorni all'anno dove la temperatura è superiore a +10 °C.
Ci sono tre venti che soffiano su Pola:
• Bora (vento catabatico freddo di provenienza est/nord-est che soffia d'inverno con particolare intensità)
• Scirocco (vento caldo proveniente da sud-est che porta piogge).
• Maestrale (vento estivo che spira dal mare verso l'entroterra).

THE BEACH WITH THE CUBIC STONES

One of the places I want to talk about is a beach, or rather a small natural harbor, with many cubic stones, it is not too naturalistic destination but it is really special.
It is a huge open space in which they have been arranged in an orderly manner many cubic stones that are very special.
I honestly do not know the reason for this place, probably it was an ancient deposit of cutting stone, but I have not found much information about it.

LA SPIAGGIA CON I SASSI CUBI
Uno dei posti di cui vi voglio parlare è una spiaggia, o meglio un piccolo porto naturale, con tanti sassi cubi, non è una meta troppo naturalistica ma è davvero particolare.
Si tratta di uno spiazzo gigantesco nel quale sono stati sistemati in modo ordinato tantissimi sassi di forma cubica che sono molto particolari.
Sinceramente non so la ragione di questo luogo, probabilmente era un antico deposito d pietra da taglio, ma non ho trovato molte informazioni a riguardo.

We mountain biked here through some trails through the vegetation, it was really fun, I really enjoy riding mountain bikes.

Siamo arrivati qui con la mountain bike attraverso dei percorsi tra la vegetazione, è stato davvero divertente, mi piace molto guidare la mountain bike.

The water here is very clean, as in all of Croatia, but the really beautiful thing is that the green of the plants reaches all the way to the seashore.

Qui l'acqua è molto pulita, come in tutta la Croazia, ma la cosa davvero bella è che il verde delle piante arriva fino alla riva del mare.

In this place it's nice to climb on top of these big cubic boulders to see the coast from above, of course I don't recommend you to do it because it could be very dangerous, but I did and it was really nice.

In questo posto è bello salire sopra questi grandi sassi cubici per vedere la costa dall'alto, ovviamente non vi consiglio di farlo perché potrebbe essere molto pericoloso, ma io l'ho fatto ed è stato davvero bello.

PUNTA CRISTO

On the peninsula of Stinjan, near Pula is Fort Punta Christo, a defensive fortress that was abandoned and cleaned in recent years has been reborn to new life, becoming the heart of entertainment.
The fortress was built in the late 1800s in a port of great importance during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

PUNTA CRISTO
Sulla penisola di Stinjan, vicino a Pola si trova Fort Punta Christo, una fortezza difensiva che è stata abbandonata e ripulita negli ultimi anni è rinata a nuova vita, diventando il cuore del divertimento.
La fortezza è stata costruita alla fine del 1800 in un porto di grande importanza durante la monarchia austro-ungarica.

It is located on a small peninsula 45 m above sea level with a beautiful view of the bay of Pula, and the Brijuni Islands National Park.
The fortress is surrounded by a deep moat and there are three entrances that lead inside the fort.
Inside the fort there are three courtyards through which you reach three underground areas.

Si trova su una piccola penisola a 45 m sopra il livello del mare con una vista bellissima sulla baia di Pola, e sul Parco Nazionale delle isole Brioni.
La Fortezza è circondata da un profondo fossato e ci sono tre entrate che conducono all’interno del forte.
All’interno del forte ci sono tre cortili attraverso i quali si raggiungono tre aree sotterranee.

In early 2000 began the cleaning of the fort and was created the Association of Friends of Fort Punta Christo of Stinjan: from this moment begins the collaboration with the Association Seasplah that will organize the first and second Seasplash Festival.

Nei primi anni del 2000 è cominciata la pulizia del forte ed è stata creata l’Associazione degli Amici di Fort Punta Christo di Stinjan: da questo momento comincia la collaborazione con l’Associazione Seasplah che si occuperà di organizzare il primo e il secondo Seasplash Festival.

Near the fort there is a small, very colorful village that was built with natural and recycled materials, a totally new environment that can accommodate anyone who wants to relax.

In vicinanza al forte è presente un piccolo villaggio molto colorato che è stato costruito con materiale naturale e di recupero, un ambiente totalmente nuovo e che può accogliere chiunque voglia rilassarsi.

There is also a beautiful suspension bridge that has recently undergone some mysterious phenomena.
This bridge is very long and allows you to reach the other end of the rocky coast.

E' presente anche un bellissimo ponte sospeso che ultimamente ha subito qualche misterioso fenomeno.
Questo ponte è molto lungo e permette di raggiungere l'altro capo della costa rocciosa.

As you can see this colorful environment has been arranged to welcome tourists and locals, it is very characteristic and gives a nice idea of sharing and altruism.
Those who approach this place can safely use all the items with the only rule being to leave everything as they found it... seems more than reasonable to me.

Come vedete questo colorato ambiente è stato sistemato per accogliere turisti e popolazione locale, è molto caratteristico e da una bella idea di condivisione e altruismo.
Chi si avvicina a questo luogo può tranquillamente utilizzare tutti gli oggetti con la sola regola di lasciare tutto come ha trovato... mi sembra più che ragionevole.

There is also a small bar where you can drink some very special drinks, when we were there the bar was closed but ... no big deal ... the environment was really beautiful.

E' presente anche un piccolo bar dove si può bere qualche drink molto particolare, quando siamo stati noi il bar era chiuso ma... poco male... l'ambiente era davvero bellissimo.

We leave this beautiful place that I remember with some nostalgia and go to see other places in this beautiful country.

Lasciamo questo luogo stupendo che ricordo con un po di nostalgia e andiamo a vedere altri luoghi di questo bellissimo paese.

THE OLD TOWN

The historical center of Pula is very beautiful and characteristic, the images you will see are very particular because we are no longer used to seeing so many people all together.
I myself regret those moments when everything seemed to go well, it was almost taken for granted to see so many people on the street walking and chatting.
In the last two years this panorama has totally changed and maybe, even if we go back to Pula we won't find the same thing, in fact the difference was made by the people, who populated and lived the old town.

IL CENTRO STORICO
Il centro storico di Pola è molto bello e caratteristico, le immagini ch vedrete sono molto particolari perché non siamo più abituati a vedere tanta gente tutta insieme.
Io stesso rimpiango quei momenti in cui tutto sembrava andare bene, era quasi scontato vedere tante persone per strada che camminavano e chiacchieravano.
Da due anni questo panorama è cambiato totalmente e forse, anche se torniamo a Pola non troveremo la stessa cosa, infatti la differenza la facevano proprio le persone, che popolavano e vivevano il centro storico.

The streets of the historic center are very characteristic, narrow and dotted with small tourist stores, really beautiful, very reminiscent of some Italian villages.

Le vie del centro storico sono molto caratteristiche, strette e costellate da piccoli negozi turistici, davvero stupende, ricordano molto alcuni borghi italiani.

Among the small streets open large squares in which there are some really good restaurants ... eh yes because one of the best things to do in the center is to eat! The food around here is really good.

Tra le piccole vie si aprono grandi piazzali in cui sono presenti alcuni ristoranti davvero buoni... eh si perché una delle cose più belle da fare in centro è mangiare! Il cibo da queste parti è davvero ottimo.

This you see in the photos is the Temple of Augustus and the Goddess Rome, one of the most characteristic buildings in Pula.
The temple stands on the remains of an earlier sanctuary built between 42 BC and 16 BC, when the Roman Empire was in full expansion and the city was still outside the city limits.
The construction is the result of the urban plan of Emperor Octavian then subject to Rome.
The temple was built in order to celebrate the newborn imperial institution, which had replaced a republic that had lasted almost five centuries, the temple was dedicated to the emperor himself.

The place of worship was also dedicated to the goddess Rome, since Augustus was reluctant to build buildings in his name that were not also dedicated to the figure of the Roman Empire and its divine figure: the Goddess Rome.

Questo che vedete nelle foto è il tempio di Augusto e della Dea Roma, una delle costruzioni più caratteristiche di Pola.
Il tempio sorge sui resti di un precedente santuario edificato tra il 42 a.C. e il 16 a.C., quando l'Impero Romano era in piena espansione e la città ed era ancora fuori dai confini della città.
La costruzione è frutto del piano urbanistico dell'imperatore Ottaviano allora sottomessa a Roma.
Il tempio sorge nell'ottica di celebrare la neonata istituzione imperiale, che aveva sostituito una repubblica durata quasi cinque secoli il tempio era dedicato all'imperatore stesso.
Il luogo di culto venne anche dedicato alla dea Roma, poiché Augusto era restio alla costruzione di edifici in suo nome che non fossero dedicati anche alla figura dell'Impero romano e della sua figura divina: la Dea Roma.

As I was telling you, the food here is wonderful, especially the meat and fish dishes, it must be that when I am on vacation I tend not to eat much at lunch, and when dinner arrived I was really hungry.
I recommend you to try the Ćevapčići, a typical meat dish, they are like small sausages very tasty. A Balkan food made of spiced minced meat widely spread also in part of North-Eastern Italy and in Romania.

Come vi dicevo, il cibo qui è una cosa meravigliosa, soprattutto i piatti di carne e pesce, sarà che io quando sono in vacanza tendo a non mangiare molto a pranzo, e quando arrivava la cena avevo una fame da lupi.
Vi consiglio di assaggiare i Ćevapčići, un piatto tipico a base di carne, sono come piccole salsicce molto saporite. Un cibo balcanico a base di carne tritata speziata ampiamente diffusi anche in parte del Nord-Est italiano e in Romania.

I really have fond memories of this old town, I really enjoyed spending my evenings here! Croatian people are very quiet and sociable here and it's fun to have a quiet evening in the old town.

Ho davvero un bel ricordo di questo centro storico, mi sono davvero divertito a passare qui le mie serate! Le persone croate sono molto tranquille e socievoli in questo contesto ed è divertente passare una serata tranquilla nel centro storico.

THE POLA ARENA

This is Pula's arena, in Croatian you will hear it calledb: Pulska Arena, also known as Pula's amphitheater, is one of the largest amphitheaters in the world.
The monument is the emblem of the city and has great symbolic and emotional value for the citizens who call it Rena.

L'ARENA DI POLA
Questa è l'arena di Pola, in croato la sentirete chiamareb: Pulska Arena, conosciuta anche come l'anfiteatro di Pola, è uno dei più grandi anfiteatri al mondo.
Il monumento è l'emblema della città ed ha grandissimo valore simbolico ed affettivo per i cittadini che lo chiamano Rena.

The amphitheater was built between 2 BC and 14 AD thanks to Emperor Augustus, who took the material from the stone quarries located in what was then the outskirts of the city that are still active today.
Emperor Vespasian (the one who had commissioned the Colosseum in Rome) made a very important enlargement: he wanted to pay homage to Cenis, a girl of Istrian origin born in Pula, his lover.

L'anfiteatro venne costruito tra il 2 a.C. ed il 14 d.C. sempre grazie all'imperatore Augusto, che prelevò il materiale dalle cave di pietra situate in quella che allora era la periferia della città che ancora oggi sono attive.
L'imperatore Vespasiano (colui che aveva commissionato il Colosseo a Roma) fece un ampliamento molto importante: egli voleva rendere omaggio a Cenis, una ragazza di origine istriana nativa di Pola, sua amante.

The arena was used for gladiator fights or naumachie.
It is assumed that it remained intact until the fifteenth century and later was used as a stone quarry for some buildings of the Republic of Venice, as well as the local inhabitants.
During the Napoleonic era it was extensively restored.

L'arena veniva utilizzata per combattimenti di gladiatori o per naumachie.
Si presume che sia rimasto intatta, fino al XV secolo e in seguito sarebbe stato utilizzato come cava di pietra per alcune costruzioni della Repubblica di Venezia, oltreché degli abitanti locali.
Durante l'epoca napoleonica fu restaurato ampiamente.

Today it is used as the Arena of Verona: a center of theater and music and has hosted the Pula and Histria festivals, and even an episode of Games without Borders in 1981.
Every summer it hosts the Pula Film Festival event. World famous personalities such as Sting, Julio Iglesias, Anastacia, Luciano Pavarotti and Alanis Morissette have performed in this arena, and it can accommodate as many as 5000 spectators.

Oggi viene utilizzato come l'Arena di Verona: un centro di teatro e musica e ha ospitato il festival di Pola e gli Histria festivals, e anche a una puntata di Giochi senza frontiere nel 1981.
Ogni estate ospita l'evento Pola Film Festival, in questa arena si sono esibiti personaggi di fama mondiale come Sting, Julio Iglesias, Anastacia, Luciano Pavarotti e Alanis Morissette, ed è in grado di ospitare ben 5000 spettatori.

The amphitheater is completely in white limestone, and develops in three orders thanks to the superimposition of two series of arches.
After the enlargement of Vespasian, the plant reached the dimensions of 132.5 x 105 meters, seen from the coast, has a height of 32.5 m, but since the building stands on a slope, the side opposite the sea the height is greatly reduced and the amphitheater has only the second order of 72 arches.

L'anfiteatro è completamente in pietra calcarea bianca, e si sviluppa in tre ordini grazie alla sovrapposizione di due serie di archi.
Dopo l'ampliamento di Vespasiano, la pianta raggiunse le dimensioni di 132,5 x 105 metri, visto dal litorale, ha un'altezza di 32,5 m, ma dato che la costruzione si erge su un pendio, il lato opposto al mare l'altezza è notevolmente ridotta e l'anfiteatro presenta solo il secondo ordine, di 72 arcate.

It's really beautiful this arena, we visited it one night before dinner so we could admire it under the warm lights of sunset.

E' davvero bellissima questa arena, noi l'abbiamo visitata una sera prima di cena, in modo da poterla ammirare sotto le calde luci del tramonto.

CONCLUSION

I remember this trip very nostalgically, when you could do anything and life seemed so simple and normal, not that it isn't now... but it leaves me a little bitter that I can't travel as much anymore.

CONCLUSIONI
Ricordo con molta nostalgia questo viaggio, quando si poteva fare tutto e la vita sembrava così semplice e normale, non che adesso non lo sia... ma mi lascia un po di amarezza non poter viaggiare più così tanto.

Between good food, beautiful landscapes and architecture we spent a nice week of vacation, Croatia is really a beautiful and welcoming country.

Tra buonissimo cibo, stupendi paesaggi e architetture abbiamo passato una bella settimana di vacanza, la Croazia è davvero un paese bello ed accogliente.

The thing I liked most about Pula is the way in which the historic center is lived, here in Italy we have beautiful historic centers that often are not valued enough.

La cosa che mi è piaciuta di più di Pola è proprio il modo in cui viene vissuto il centro storico, qui in Italia abbiamo dei bellissimi centri storici che spesso però non vengono valorizzati abbastanza.

Going to Croatia also means having a fairly cheap vacation, Pula is a great tourist center and even in August prices are very acceptable.

Andare in Croazia vuol dire anche fare una vacanza abbastanza economica, Pola è un grande centro turistico e anche in Agosto i prezzi sono molto accettabili.

I recommend this experience to everyone and hope to visit this beautiful country again soon.

Consiglio a tutti questa esperienza e spero di tornare presto a visitare questo bellissimo paese.
