Mandalas in the classroom and at home - The best option for children's creativity? [eng/spa]

in Motherhood13 days ago

In these recent weeks of school, my daughter has been assigned a lot of homework, specifically from her art teacher. At the beginning of this third term, the teacher asked parents to buy a mandala book for use in class and at home. I must confess I didn't buy the book because I think there are better alternatives for art activities than mandalas. However, I ended up giving in and printing the ones the teacher assigned.

I first learned about mandalas from a Hive post. Someone shared that coloring mandalas brought them spiritual peace, which piqued my curiosity. That's when I discovered their connection to Hinduism and understood why that person felt that way. Since it was a practice related to a different religion than my own, I didn't give it much importance. But to my surprise, schools are now using them to foster children's attention, concentration, and creativity.

Experts claim that coloring mandalas helps strengthen attention, concentration, and creativity because you get immersed in the process and theoretically block out all other distractions. I don't doubt they can help with these things. Still, their connection to religious and spiritual traditions, which I differ with, creates some discomfort for me. Not out of prejudice, but because they are symbols used for rituals or sacred practices of a religion, and I believe using them as an academic activity is disrespectful because it trivializes them.

Another detail I've learned about coloring mandalas is that it should be a relaxing activity that allows for free expression. So, the color pattern you choose should be up to you. But in my daughter's case, the pattern is imposed, and so are the colors. I think this makes the activity lose its essence because it could lead to frustration instead of relief, especially when she's assigned up to 20 in a single week along with many other assignments from her other subjects.

As I mentioned earlier, from my perspective, there are alternatives to mandalas. I grew up without this practice, and I remember that the academic activities we did to foster concentration and creativity included, for example, making traditional toys. Ask yourselves, what percentage of children today knows how to make a papagayo (kite)? Not to mention a perinola (cup-and-ball game) or a gurrufío (whirligig). We also made clay crafts like those our indigenous people created, or wrote popular stories similar to those in our folklore. Ultimately, I believe these activities are better because they foster cultural identity.

The color pattern is cool but I think you're right, the kids must be given the freedom to choose the color combination to ignite their creativity more. It's better than following what was instructed. Art must be free.

And to add, about making toys such as the kite, yes that was so much fun. I learned making one when I was in the grade school. I guess it's better, can parents suggest?

I hope your daughter will be able to catch up with the homework.

Thank you for stopping to read. As parents, we can suggest, but unfortunately, we're not always heard. My country's education program has changed a lot; it includes aspects of our culture, but it also includes those from other cultures.

I see. I understand speaking on the parents' side. Probably, they are trying to be global, to help prepare the kids for the real battle when they enter the workforce one day. Who knows, one of the kids will become an international figure or the country's ambassador to another country.

You're doing well as a parent, being meticulous about what the kids are learning and always supporting their learning progress. Keep up the good work.

Mmmm Do you think making mandalas can achieve that? The goal is to improve concentration; if that helps, it's welcome. But there are many things that kids can do that have the same effect.

You're right. May they contemplate it and choose the best ones for the kids.

correct, kids need a lot of stimulation and good leadership to develop their best abilities and skills

Here at home we love mandalas! This teacher is smart using them as "Homework" in such a fun way! I yet have to learn how to create a great mandala myself but I truly enjoy (and so does my 9 year old) to colour them in colouring books or prints from the web..

At home we don't love mandalas but I think they are a good tool.

Mandalas is an relaxing activity for everyone. And for kids they used their creativity sample in choosing the colors they like. Its allows to express their feelings. Were both doing it with my daughter and we love it. 😍

I'm glad you find them useful, I'm not saying they aren't, however, Enough to express feelings? I don't know. At home, open and close conversation with our daughter has helped us get her to express her feelings.

Thats good way too. Even us we need to know good or bad things happened. We dont like to answer us that im ok. I know there more of it. Just tell us what happen start to end. 😍

Letting kids pick their own color combinations is such a great idea—it really gives them a chance to express themselves creatively. Making a kite bring back also to my childhood years I still remember how fun I'am on that. I'm hoping that your daughter gets back on track with her homework soon. Goodluck.
