Out in the forest not much is growing anymore. I did find a huge shelf mushroom that fell off a tree.

These conch mushrooms can be useful for making mushroom leather as well as making tinder for fires.

There were quite a few snow flurries on my walk. The lake isn't frozen over yet though.

A bit of snow managed to fall on some dead wood.

Surprisingly I actually found some mushrooms still growing.

These are actually a quite poisonous mushroom called Galerina marginata.

These are tricky mushrooms because they grow at the same time as winter mushrooms aka flammulina veluptides which are a nice edible.

If you are a beginner forager for winter mushrooms you need to learn the features of galerina marginata. The common name is funeral bell as this is a deadly mushroom.

One of the features of deadly galerina is the little ring around the stem. Also the color is more rusty brown compared to a brighter orange winter mushroom.

The reliable way to distinguish deadly funeral bells from edible winter mushrooms is the color of their spore prints. Deadly galerinas have rusty brown spores and you can even kind of see it in their gills. Edible winter mushrooms have a white spore print and at a glance their gills are mor of a light yellow and at the base of their stem they have a black velvety foot.

So far I have not found any winter mushrooms yet, just tyese deadly galerinas. That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Curious to know if the mushrooms are actually frozen!
Also if I could just give you a little tip: scientific names, like Flammulina velutipes follow a few rules established by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. The first name - the genus - is capitalized, but the second name - the specific epithet - is never capitalized. Also both names should be in italic. When writing by hand, you can underline both words instead. Also you seem to have made a typo veluptides / velutipes. Great post though, thoroughly enjoyed the photos!

That shelf mushroom is huge! Maybe its an optical illusion 🤔 the ones high up in the trees maybe bigger than I realize. You got snow before me. I'm surprised. But we are supposed to get snow on Wednesday.

It was just a bit of wimpy snow, usually before thanksgiving we have a medium sized snow here. Hope I can find some undeadly winter mushrooms before then.

If only our countries were close together then I would invite you to hunt mushrooms with me, for now it's the rainy season in remote villages where I live,That means there will be many mushroom castles that we can meet, yesterday I even got more than 10 mushrooms when I hunted him, I hope one day we can hunt mushrooms together

I bet even when there isn't the rainy season mushrooms still grow right? The winter is rough here it basically kills everything from growing for three months. I would look forward to hunting purple ramaria in your area.

Ha ha, If you come to my place then I will rent a private jet to pick you up,At my place you will find an enchanting mushroom paradise

Its one of the biggest one's I've seen. Lots of tinder fuzz could be made from it for starting campfires.
