Never Dwell In Your Past Achievement

in Self Improvementlast year (edited)

It has come to my notice that one of the most common problems people have is that they set goals, and then they don't progress as fast as they'd like to due to so many reasons. Such as;

  • Lack of motivation
  • Lack of a plan or strategy
  • Not being consistent
  • Not putting in much hard work
  • Dwelling on your past goals.

The last point in the paragraph is what really prompted this post.

Firstly, making the move to dwell on your past achievements can be counterproductive for several reasons. For example, if you've previously set a goal to run a marathon and you were able to successfully complete it, you might dwell on your past accomplishment by looking back at old training logs, photos from the race, or your medal.

This can be a healthy way to reflect on your past successes and to remind yourself of what you are capable of achieving. However, dwelling in the past too much can also be a bad habit, as it can prevent you from moving forward and setting new goals. Just as stated above.

Another good example is this tweet by SBF_FTX.

After the collapse of FTX, I now see SBF as someone who got disconnected from his true strategy of building the next-generation exchange and failed everyone who saw him as a role model.

Also, focusing on past achievements sometimes leads to feelings of frustration or disappointment, especially if those goals were not achieved. This can be demotivating and can make it difficult to keep a positive outlook and approach to your current goals. Instead of dwelling in the past, Moving forward and setting new goals is the way to go.

So far, it's no more news that it's best to keep moving forward and setting new goals rather than glorying on past achievements. If one needs to move forward to make better achievements, it's important to take a proactive approach. This means looking ahead to the future and identifying what you want to achieve, as well as making a plan to help you get there.

Some tips for moving forward and setting new goals include:

  • Reflect on your past experiences and what you have learned from them. This will help you to identify any obstacles or challenges that you may face in the future and develop strategies to overcome them. However, too much of this act will lead to the issues stated at the start of this post ( dwelling on your past achievements).

  • Identify your priorities and what is most important to you. This will help you to focus on the goals that are most meaningful to you, and to prioritize your time and resources accordingly.

  • Be specific and realistic when setting your goals. It's important to set goals that are challenging but achievable so that you can stay motivated and on track.

  • Develop a plan of action to help you achieve your goals. This should include specific steps that you will take, as well as deadlines for completing each step.

  • Stay focused and committed to your goals. It's easy to get distracted or discouraged, but staying focused on what you want to achieve will help you to stay on track and achieve your goals.

Remember that moving forward and setting new goals is a continuous process, and it's important to be flexible and adaptable in order to adapt to changing circumstances and keep making progress.

A really nice post, it is very useful and the advice at the end is very useful. I could tell you that one struck me more than the other. Actually, I think that all of them are important; planning in detail and then failing to stay focused and committed would not help, right?
