Greetings, Hive!

I have a question: have you ever seen a movie that you really liked and after a long time, when you watch it again, you realize it's not as good as you thought it was and you end up disappointed? Well, today I watched Thor, and the exact opposite happened to me. The first time I saw it I thought it was slow, boring, without action, and without much to contribute to what Marvel was building for their cinematic universe... And the truth is that I was very wrong. It's funny how our tastes and perception of things change (or evolve) as time goes by, but the point is that now I have a very different perception of this movie, I found myself with a quite particular gem of this cinematic universe, so today I'll talk about the beginning of the story of the Norse God of Thunder, Thor.

So without any further ado, let's start!

As Iron Man, Thor was a character not well known in the world of comics, so its film adaptation was also a bet by Marvel. It was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins as none other than the Father of Everything; Odin. It is the fourth film produced by the by then already known Marvel Studios and its cinematic universe, it was released on May 6, 2011 in the United States. The film starts by introducing us to Jane Foster, an astrophysicist who is studying unusual meteorological phenomena in New Mexico that make her suspect that they may be wormholes in space-time; during this investigation, Jane accidentally runs over Thor who was landing on Earth.

At this point the film flashes back to Asgard, the realm of the gods, where Thor was to be crowned by his father, Odin, as the new king of Asgard, however the ceremony is interrupted by an infiltrated attack by the Frost Giants. Blinded by anger and ego, as well for an immature urge to fight, Thor decides to travel to Jotunheim to take down the giants. In Jotunheim things get much more complicated than expected so Odin himself has to make an appearance in order to stop the confrontation and save his sons lives, Thor and Loki. Back in Asgard, Odin strongly rebukes Thor for acting so impulsively and irresponsibly and tells him that a true king avoids wars and confrontations at all costs, and after a strong arguing, Odin decides to exile Thor to Earth and strip him of the Mjolnir until he’s worthy of wielding it again. We then return to Earth when Thor is run over by Jane, and thus begins a journey in which our superhero must learn valuable lessons about humility, making responsible decisions, and maturing to become worthy of Thor's powers once again.

Contrary to what we might expect from a superhero movie, this time the protagonism is not in the action scenes (or at least from my point of view), although action scenes are well done even for the time, what really takes center stage is the conflict and development that the characters go through, and this marks a very particular essence for a Marvel movie, I think this may be because this first phase of films were all purely experimental projects and were testing what formula worked the best and was best suited to the public’s need, so by this time we have 3 films that although they have the same principle, they feel very different from each other. I feel that within the conventions that were being established for superhero movies, Thor tries to approach, in a very subtle way, towards epic drama, in the style of Troy. Now, I don't want to say that they're similar movies or that Thor takes itself too seriously, but I do think there's a little bit of an attempt to give it that edge.

Another strong point of this film is, in my opinion, its main characters; Thor and Loki are the ones who have the most consistent development within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor evolves and stops being an angry egotist and starts to become someone much more self-aware, which fits in nicely with everything he will begin to undergo later in the MCU. Loki's inner conflict is very well portrayed and also wonderfully played by Tom Hiddleston, who becomes the first great antagonist of the MCU, his motivations feel real and he's not just someone who is there because the plot needs a bad guy. One of my favorite things about this movie is how they handled the humor; most of the things are funny because Thor is totally out of sync with human culture, he doesn't make jokes or pretends to be funny, but the situations end up being funny because he's a Viking and acts like one, the comedy revolves around him and not because of him.

If I had to say something negative about the film, it's that the music is completely irrelevant. I don't remember a single song in the whole film; in fact, I feel that the film had no soundtrack, that the only sounds were the voices and the sound effects, redundancy aside. On the other hand, I have to say that the special effects are very good for the time and have aged well, the shots of Asgard are spectacular and the CGI in the fights is simple but effective.

As you may have noticed, my surprise when I saw this movie again was more than pleasant, I found a pretty good film that although it doesn't stand out in anything, everything it does, it does it quite well. In fact, I would have loved they keep this kind of script for the character and some others like Hulk, unfortunately things changed a lot after Thor’s second movie, and Hulk never had a solo movie again. This was a more than worthy homecoming for the God of Thunder and a film that works very well on its own without needing to be a connoisseur of the source material or having seen the previous films.

Tengo una pregunta, ¿alguna vez han visto alguna película que les gusta mucho después de mucho tiempo y al verla de nuevo se dan cuenta que no es tan buena como pensaban y terminan decepcionados? Bueno, hoy vi Thor, y me pasó exactamente lo contrario. La primera vez que la vi me pareció lenta, aburrida, sin acción, y sin mucho que aportar a lo que Marvel estaba construyendo para su universo cinematográfico… Y la verdad es que estaba muy equivocado. Es curioso como nuestros gustos y percepción de las cosas cambian (o evolucionan) a medida que pasa el tiempo, pero el punto es que ahora tengo una percepción muy distinta de esta película, me encontré con una joya bastante particular de este universo cinematográfico, por lo que hoy hablaré acerca del comienzo de la historia del Dios Nórdico del Trueno, Thor.

Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!

Al igual que Iron Man, Thor era un personaje no muy conocido dentro del mundo de los comics, por lo que su adaptación al cine también era una apuesta por parte de Marvel. Fue producida por Marvel Studios y distribuida por Paramount Pictures, la dirección estuvo a cargo de Kenneth Branagh y fue protagonizada por Chris Hemsworth en el papel de Thor, Tom Hiddleston como Loki, Natalie Portman como Jane Foster, y el legendario Anthony Hopkins en el papel de nada más y nada menos que el Padre de Todo; Odín. Es la cuarta película producida por el para entonces ya conocido Marvel Studios y su universo cinematográfico y fue estrenada el 6 de mayo del 2011 en Estados Unidos. La película comienza presentándonos a Jane Foster, una astrofísica que está estudiando fenómenos meteorológicos inusuales en Nuevo México que le hacen sospechar que puede tratarse de agujeros de gusano en el espacio-tiempo; durante esta investigación, Jane accidentalmente atropella a Thor quién estaba aterrizando en la tierra.

En ese momento la película retrocede unos instantes y nos lleva a Asgard, el reino de los dioses, al momento donde Thor iba a ser coronado por su padre, Odín, como el nuevo rey de Asgard, no obstante esta ceremonia es interrumpida por un ataque infiltrado de los Gigantes de Hielo. Cegado por la ira y el ego, así como también por un impulso inmaduro de querer combatir, Thor decide viajar a Jotunheim para acabar con los gigantes. En Jotunheim las cosas se complican mucho más de lo esperado por lo que el mismísimo Odín tiene que hacer acto de presencia para poder detener el enfrentamiento y salvar la vida de sus hijos, Thor y Loki. De vuelta en Asgard, Odín reprende fuertemente a Thor por actuar de manera tan impulsiva e irresponsable y le dice que un verdadero rey evita las guerras y los enfrentamientos a toda costa, y después de una fuerte discusión, Odín decide exiliar a Thor a la tierra y despojarlo del Mjolnir hasta que sea digno de volver a empuñarlo de nuevo. Luego volvemos a la tierra al momento que Thor es atropellado por Jane, y de esta forma comienza un viaje en el que nuestro superhéroe de turno deberá aprender valiosas lecciones acerca de la humildad, tomar decisiones responsablemente, y madurar para volver a ser digno de los poderes de Thor.

Contrario a lo que podríamos esperar de una película de superhéroes, en esta ocasión el protagonismo no lo tienen las escenas de acción (o al menos desde mi punto de vista), porque si bien las escenas de acción están bien logradas incluso para la época, lo que toma protagonismo realmente es el conflicto y desarrollo que atraviesan los personajes, y esto marca una esencia muy particular para tratarse de una película de Marvel, creo que esto puede deberse a que esta primera fase de películas eran todas netamente proyectos experimentales y estaban probando que formula funcionaba mejor y se adaptaba mejor a las necesidades del público, por eso para este momento tenemos 3 películas que si bien tienen el mismo principio, se sienten muy distintas entre ellas. Siento que dentro de las convenciones que se estaban estableciendo para el cine de superhéroes, Thor trata de acercarse de una manera muy sutil hacia el drama épico, al estilo de Troya. Ojo, no quiero decir que sean películas parecidas o que Thor se tome muy en serio a sí misma, pero sí creo que hay una pequeña intención de darle ese toque.

Otro de los puntos fuertes de esta película es que en mi opinión, sus protagonistas, Thor y Loki, son los que tienen el desarrollo más consecuente dentro del universo cinematográfico de Marvel. Thor evoluciona y deja de ser un iracundo egoísta y se comienza a convertir en alguien mucho más consciente, lo que encaja muy bien con todo lo que comenzará a sufrir posteriormente en el UCM. El conflicto de Loki es está muy bien retratado y además maravillosamente interpretado por Tom Hiddleston, quién se convierte en el primer gran antagonista del UCM, sus motivaciones se sienten reales y no es solamente alguien que está ahí porque la trama necesita un villano. De mis cosas favoritas de esta película es como manejaron el humor en ella; aquí la mayoría de las cosas son chistosas porque Thor desencaja totalmente con la cultura de los humanos, él no hace chistes ni pretende ser gracioso, pero las situaciones terminan siendo chistosas porque él es un vikingo y actúa como tal, la comedia gira alrededor de él y no por él.

Si tuviese que decir algo negativo de la película, es que la música es completamente irrelevante. No recuerdo ni una canción en todo el film, es más, siento que la película no tenía soundtrack, que los únicos sonidos eran las voces y los efectos de sonido, valga la redundancia. Por otra parte, tengo que decir que los efectos especiales son muy buenos para la época y que han envejecido bien, las tomas de Asgard son espectaculares y el CGI en las peleas es simple pero efectivo.

Como se podrán haber dado cuenta, mi sorpresa al ver de nuevo esta película fue más que grata, me encontré con un film bastante correcto que si bien no destaca de sobremanera en nada, todo lo que hace lo hace bastante bien. De hecho, me habría encantado que se mantuviera este tipo de guión para el personaje y algunos otros como Hulk, desafortunadamente las cosas cambiaron mucho a partir de la segunda película de Thor, y Hulk pues… Más nunca tuvo una película en solitario. Esta fue una bienvenida más que digna para el Dios del Trueno y un film que funciona muy bien por su propia cuenta sin necesidad ser un conocedor del material original o de haber visto las películas anteriores.
