Hay algo que me cuesta un poco entender y es el por qué se está hablando tan poco de esta serie teniendo la calidad que posee. Tokyo Vice acaba de culminar su segunda temporada y hay que decir que es de las series más top que he visto en los últimos años, tanto por su trama como por lo visual, obviando el hecho de que todo lo que se hace en Japón pareciera hipnotizar a las personas. Quien no quiere ver una historia en donde el centro de atención sean los Yakuzas y en el cómo controlan a un Tokyo ambientado en los noventas. Y todo esto sin mencionar las pequeñas sub historias de amor, de lealtad, de apegos familiares y de miedo que hay a lo largo de sus capítulos.
There is something that is a little difficult for me to understand and that is why this series is being talked about so little, given the quality it has. Tokyo Vice has just finished its second season and I must say that it is one of the top series I have seen in recent years, both for its plot and its visuals, ignoring the fact that everything that is done in Japan seems to hypnotize people. Who doesn't want to see a story where the Yakuzas are the center of attention and how they control a Tokyo set in the nineties. Not to mention the little sub-stories of love, loyalty, family attachment and fear that run throughout the chapters.
Como comentaba ya estamos en la segunda temporada pero para aquellos que aún no están familiarizados con la serie la cosa va más o menos así. Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) es un periodista norteamericano que llegó a Japón con la intención de conocer e investigar todo el mundo criminal que hay detrás de los Yakuzas, esta famosa mafia que azotó a Tokyo décadas atrás. Para eso comienza a trabajar en el Meicho Shimbun como el primer extranjero en hacerlo, uno de los periódicos más importantes del país. A lo largo de la primera temporada veremos como Jake se acerca demasiado a estas mafias al punto de que su propia vida llega a correr bastante peligro en muchas ocasiones. El final llega con él escapando y escondiéndose ante las amenazas y persecuciones.
As I said we are already in the second season but for those who are not yet familiar with the series it goes more or less like this. Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) is an American journalist who came to Japan with the intention of knowing and investigating the whole criminal world behind the Yakuzas, this famous mafia that hit Tokyo decades ago. For that he starts working at the Meicho Shimbun as the first foreigner to do so, one of the most important newspapers in the country. Throughout the first season we will see how Jake gets too close to these mafias to the point that his own life becomes quite dangerous on many occasions. The end comes with him escaping and hiding in the face of threats and persecution.
Arrancada la segunda temporada el panorama es casi el mismo, Jake ya estando en el ojo del huracán se convierte en un objetivo o blanco más evidente para estos grupos criminales. A esto hay que sumarle que dentro de los Yakuzas hay diferentes clanes, casas, grupos, como quieran llamarlos, que también están en conflictos entre ellos mismos y es que al final del día lo único que anhelan o persiguen estos hombres es el poder absoluto y si para conseguir eso hay que matar, amenazar y extorsionar pues sin problemas lo harán. Otro punto importante con esta segunda temporada es que se vuelve un poco más personal en el contexto de que incluyen a la familia de Jake lo que será un ingrediente interesante en la trama y desarrollo de la historia y de la propia investigación.
Jake being in the eye of the hurricane, he becomes a more obvious target for these criminal groups. To this we must add that within the Yakuzas there are different clans, houses, groups, whatever you want to call them, which are also in conflict among themselves and at the end of the day the only thing these men crave or pursue is absolute power and if to achieve that they have to kill, threaten and extort, they will do it without problems. Another important point with this second season is that it becomes a little more personal in the context of including Jake's family, which will be an interesting ingredient in the plot and development of the story and the investigation itself.
Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) siguen como policía/investigador y casi que mano derecha de Jake lo cual hace que esta dupla sea infalible. En términos generales esta segunda temporada es un poco más madura que la primera, ya que en aquella nos dan como un preámbulo de cómo son los cosas y los límites a los que puede escalar todo, en cambio en esta los problemas ya son conocidos y sabemos la magnitud de los mismos por lo que todo se vuelva un poco más pesado y oscuro. Siento que esta segunda parte es menos superficial que la primera, hay más luchas internas, hay más corrupción, hay más en juego. Y es que acá casi todo se centra sobre la cabeza de uno de los Yakuzas, el más temido por todos y eso hará que la dinámica cambie por completo.
Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) continues as a policeman/investigator and almost Jake's right-hand man, which makes this duo infallible. In general terms this second season is a little more mature than the first one, since in that one we get a preamble of how things are and the limits to which everything can escalate, on the other hand in this one the problems are already known and we know the magnitude of them so everything becomes a little heavier and darker. I feel that this second part is less superficial than the first, there are more internal struggles, there is more corruption, there is more at stake. And here almost everything is focused on the head of one of the Yakuzas, the most feared by all and that will change the dynamics completely.
En cuanto a la trama es de las cosas que más atrapan porque aunque creas que todo va lento la realidad es que no es así, el tema es que la vida en Japón pareciera que va a una marcha menos y eso hace que tengamos una perspectiva distinta y esa es precisamente la magia de todo. No hay episodio malo, no hay uno que te aburra, todos tienen elementos que hacen que te enganches más con la serie y con los personajes, sobretodo con esto último. Es una combinación de drama con un thriller criminal y policial que está lleno de una violencia bastante explícita y es que hasta esto está bien cuidado, no es la de matar por matar y que se vea la sangre, no, es algo más "estilizado", es un crimen más estético si es que cabe la expresión.
As for the plot, it is one of the most captivating things because although you think that everything goes slowly, the reality is that it is not so, the thing is that life in Japan seems to go at a slower pace and that makes us have a different perspective and that is precisely the magic of everything. There is no bad episode, there is not one that bores you, they all have elements that make you get more hooked with the series and with the characters, especially with the latter. It is a combination of drama with a crime and police thriller that is full of quite explicit violence and even this is well cared for, it is not killing for the sake of killing and blood is seen, no, it is something more "stylized", it is a more aesthetic crime if the expression fits.
Visualmente sigue siendo una joya. Las luces de neón, la apariencia noventera, la fotografía, los colores, todo está muy bien logrado para poder dar la vibra que se está buscando. Creo que es de las cosas que más se disfrutan, el como se ve ve todo a través de la pantalla. Hablando ahora de los personajes pues el trabajo de Ansel y Ken es extraordinario, tienen muy buena química juntos. Pero esta vez quiero nombrar tanto a Sho Kasamatsu que hace de Sato y al Yakuza líder Ayumi Tanida quien es Tozawa. La verdad es que son muy grandes actores, sobretodo el segundo. La inmersión que hacen de sus personajes y el nivel de interpretación es muy top. Como dije, el bien más valioso de esta serie son sus personajes.
Visually it is still a gem. The neon lights, the nineties look, the photography, the colors, everything is very well done to give the vibe you're looking for. I think that's one of the things you enjoy the most, the way you see everything through the screen. Talking about the characters, Ansel and Ken's work is extraordinary, they have great chemistry together. But this time I want to mention both Sho Kasamatsu who plays Sato and the Yakuza leader Ayumi Tanida who is Tozawa. The truth is that they are very great actors, especially the second one. The immersion they make of their characters and the level of interpretation is very top. As I said, the most valuable asset of this series is its characters.
A esta segunda temporada le doy un 9/10, la cual creo que es la nota en general de la serie. Es un trabajo muy top en donde todos los elementos están demás cuidados y conseguidos. Vale la pena todos y cada uno de sus capítulos. La pueden conseguir en MAX, antiguamente HBO. Tiene 8 episodios de una hora aproximadamente. Muy recomendada, imperdible. Les dejo el tráiler y así le echan un vistazo.
I give this second season a 9/10, which I think is the overall grade of the series. It is a very top work where all the elements are well cared for and achieved. It is worth each and every one of its chapters. You can get it on MAX, formerly HBO. It has 8 episodes of approximately one hour. Highly recommended, not to be missed.
