I think most of us have felt underwhelmed after anticipating something for some time only for it to finally come and you are like "that's it?". Well...that was me after I saw this movie.

Persuasion is a movie adaptation of Jane Austen's historical romance novel with the same title. It was first released last month on Netflix and the lead actress, Dakota Johnson, in my opinion, is this movie's selling point. It was directed by Carrie Cracknell and I can't say she did a great job with this film.

Synopsis

The movie centres around a young lady of ripe age, Anne Elliot, who still finds herself without a husband as a result of a past hurtful experience. She was "forced" to give up her former lover because of his lack of fortune and rank.

She had endured eight years of heartache and emotional turmoil before fate brought them together again under some circumstances. A couple of events occur and they end up together and live happily ever after.

Not much right? yeah, my thoughts exactly.

Critique

I began watching this film with some level of positive anticipation. I'd recently seen Bridgerton and the trailer of this movie promised something similar. The fact that it was a movie adaptation of a Jane Austen book made me really want to see it, so I did.

At first, I was like "hmm, okay?" then it just went downhill from there. The first thing I noticed was the very deep background loophole. All we were told is that she was forced to give up her lover but the circumstances surrounding that were very undefined and this just left me confused with the progression of events.

Her ex-lover, Fredrick Wentworth was described as dashing. Like every other person, I was expecting to see someone that fits that description. Unfortunately, he was anything but, can't think of a fitting word but it'll suffice to say that I was disappointed with the actor choice for this role.

She waited for eight years like we were told, in that time she stalked him through newspaper articles and there was no mention of his being with someone else. This leaves us speculating that in all that time he's been thinking as much of her as she was of him.

Naturally, with this type of time gap comes either of two things for supposed ex-lovers. One, pent-up emotions that explode into beautiful chemistry once they reunite or two, shrivelled up next to non-existent emotions that result in their becoming estranged even upon their reunion.

The movie implied the first option but they failed to show it. There was absolutely no chemistry between Anne and Fredrick. It would have made more sense if we weren't led to believe that they were previously madly in love with each other. Knowing that they hadn't previously met would've made my disappointment at this a little less than it is but unfortunately, it is what it is.

The attempts at humour and comedy in this film are laughable as they didn't even manage to make me crack a smile and I say this without any exaggeration. Some scenes were very childish and they left me wondering what they were thinking when it was being filmed.

The cast did an okay job, they weren't spectacular but they were okay. I guess if the script is shitty there isn't much else they can do about it.

Final thoughts

The one thing I liked about the film is the colour and setting. I think they did a pretty convincing 80's setting. The scenery used in the film was definitely aesthetically pleasing and despite the movie being a downer, this little detail made it not entirely a pain to watch.

The only thing in my opinion that can get anyone to see this movie is the lead actress, Dakota, and the trailer which was way better than the actual movie.

All this considered, I rate this movie a 4.5 out of 10.

Crítica

Empecé a ver esta película con cierto nivel de anticipación positiva. Recientemente había visto a Bridgerton y el tráiler de esta película prometía algo similar. El hecho de que fuera una adaptación cinematográfica de un libro de Jane Austen me dio muchas ganas de verlo, así que lo hice.

Habría tenido más sentido si no nos hubieran hecho creer que anteriormente estaban locamente enamorados el uno del otro. Saber que no se habían conocido previamente habría hecho que mi decepción por esto fuera un poco menor de lo que es, pero desafortunadamente, es lo que es.

Los intentos de humor y comedia en esta película son risibles ya que ni siquiera lograron sacarme una sonrisa y lo digo sin exagerar. Algunas escenas eran muy infantiles y me dejaron pensando en lo que estaban pensando cuando se estaba filmando.

El elenco hizo un buen trabajo, no fueron espectaculares pero estuvieron bien. Supongo que si el guión es una mierda, no hay mucho más que puedan hacer al respecto.

Reflexiones finales

Lo único que me gustó de la película es el color y el escenario. Creo que hicieron una ambientación de los 80 bastante convincente. El escenario utilizado en la película fue definitivamente estéticamente agradable y, a pesar de que la película fue decepcionante, este pequeño detalle hizo que no fuera del todo doloroso verla.
