TV Dramas And Soaps Of Yesteryears

in Movies & TV Shows18 days ago (edited)

Hello community people. This is my first post in this community and it was made possible by the topic of today's #aprilinleo which is about TV shows of the 80' and 90's

If I had the opportunity of going back in time, I would love to choose the 80's and 90's because there were several local, national and foreign TV series and soap operas that graced our black and white Tv's then. Once it was nearing evening, everyone will hurry up and finish their chores so that nothing will hinder them from watching. At the same time everyone will be praying that the almighty National Electrical Power Authority, NEPA, which was nicknamed Never Expect Power Always will show us mercy and restore light.

I could remember then once it's 8pm every one will sit in front of the black and white TV to watch these shows. Even when there was no power supply, dad will use his car battery to connect to the TV so we can watch it. This means that our parlor will be filled up with people from our neighborhood because no one wants to miss out, hehehe. It was always fun then.

Popular in the 80's was Behind the Clouds, a drama series about families that lived in Jos, Plateau State and popular amongst them was the Okonzua family. It starred Zack Amata as Mr Okonzua, Franca Brown as Mrs Adesuwa Okonzua,, Evelyn Ikuenobe-Otaigbe as Efe and McArthur Fom as Nosa.

This drama series produced by Paul Emema, a renowned soap opera producer, Mr Okonzua acted as a stern father and disciplinarian who was against the choice his daughter, Efe made to go into music but the mom and brother supported her. Did she succeed? You need to watch it to know.
Nosa, in his own part, a lover boy, was in a secret relationship with Zainab, another female actor. One of the popular scenes shows where he had visited Zainab in her parents returned home unannounced, he had to escape wearing her clothes and claiming to be her friend so he won't get caught by Zainab's parents.
The series didn't last long and had to stop when Nosa, died as a result cerebral meningitis.

Next is Fuji House of commotion a classic winning award comedy produced and directed by Amaka Igwe.

It was a popular sit.com drama series shown in the national television, NTA. It x-rays the way and life of those living in a polygamous family. Mr Tunji Fuji, a rich man got married to four women from different cultural background - the first wife, Mama Moji, very accommodating and a mother figure, followed by the second one, Peace, the drama queen fondly called Peaceful Peace by the husband, but there's nothing peaceful about her at all, hahaha. In every commotion that happens in that house, she's always at the center of it. Then came Iteti, nicknamed kitchen / catering practical and lastly, Caro.

This name Kitchen practical came about due to the "torment" she usually gives her family through her dominating cookery ability. She claims to have studied catering in school and knows how to cook but cooks trash and still expects the family to eat. I remember in one of the scenes where after preparing soup in her usual way, all the children started singing a mockery song for her.

A man with four wives and numerous children with different characters, to take of, you won't expect anything but commotion, hahaha. Imagine in one of the episodes, they came back from ASUU strike and locked their parents outside for four days, that's the height of it all, hehehe.
Even the drama song reveals that

"wife number one is companion, wife number two is confusion while the third and others after it are commotion".

Second Chance - El Cuerpo del Deseo, a telenovela filmed in Miami, which also graced out TV screen.

It's a story about a rich widower of 67 years, Pedro José Donoso, who got married to a young woman, Isabel. The only child of the man, Angela wasn't in support of the marriage and suspected Isabel to be up to something. Her doubt was confirmed when she caught Isabel making out with her husband's personal assistant, Andrew, who was actually her secret boyfriend. Marrying Pedro was a plan between Isabel and Andrew so that she can inherit all his wealth and that led her to poison him to death.

But fate gave him a second chance and there was an exchange of body between him and Salvador, a poor farmer in another village at the point of death. It was through Salvador who now hosts his body that he was able to unravel the secret of his death including Isabel and Andrew's plans to take his wealth which he successfully did and they were arrested. After that he left his host body and came back back as Pedro, then married the loyal and long time maid in the household who took care of Angela, and the family lived happily.

I could remember Hot Cash, a horror TV series shown on NTA.
Hot Cash is about a story of a young orphan, Willie Willie, who was sacrificed for money rituals by a relative he was living with. This act was masterminded by the man's wife, Nchelem, who was constantly disturbing him to make money. So to seek revenge, he came back as a ghost to torment and hunt down those who had a hand in his death or anyone supporting them.

As horror as it may be especially when he flashes his blood stained teeth after killing his victim, we stilled enjoyed it because of the good laugh we usually have whenever someone sees it appearing and disappearing and starts running for his or her dear life.

You just reminded me of the past... I can remember back then when everyone will be waiting for 8pm so they could watch second chance. You will see people going to people's houses just because they don't want to miss any episode. Fuji house of commotion brought lots of laughter to our screen those years. These are unforgettable moments and thanks for bringing them back through this write up.

Oh you guys did it too?, Thought it was only in my neighborhood, lol. Our house then was the viewing center because dad will always use his car battery to connect to the TV so we can watch.
Glad it did take you back those good old days.

Indeed the movies of the old times are very interesting but then the ones of these days have better graphics that appeals so much to the eyes.
Omo, you gather enough records here

The movie world will continue to evolve. In ten years to come, the ones we see now would have been old.

They all seem fun shows, though i was never a big fan of horror. I too have nostalgia for 80s and 90s shows. Not that these shows were that great necessarily, though some of them were. I think it is because the entire nation watched those shows at the same time as there was only one channel. And typically the whole family watched. Also stories were simpler and it was more like theatre on tv :) Overall fun memories, and when we friends or family meet we always remember old shows and old ads.

Cheers from a fellow #dreemerforlife

You said it all. It was just one station showing it then and there weren't varieties like we have now.

Fuji house of commotion was the top for me. Those kids were terrible chai!

I also remember second chance a lot because of the switch in souls.

Those days were days of descent drama.

I tell you, they were the war, indaboski of those days, lol.

Those days were days of descent drama.

Exactly, everything we watched then were censored by our parents not these days a child will just watch anything and the parents won't stop them.
