The truth is that I've been a fan of anya Taylor-Joy since the movie Split (2016) and my love for her only ended up solidifying after seeing The Queen's Gambit(2020), so when I saw the first photos about this project called last night in soho I was immediately aware and finally when I saw the trailer I was totally enchanted, today we will talk about this movie

When we are introduced to Eloise we are not shown as an unreliable narrator, she makes us doubt from the beginning if she really has a "gift" as her grandmother says or if, like her mother, she suffers from some mental illness, in this way the first half of the film the viewer enters into a debate with the protagonist that makes us ask What you are seeing is true, or is it something YOU are creating? Certainly that narrative caused me a couple of nervous twitches in the first few minutes, and even at the end, I still doubted whether everything that happened had really... happened.

I liked the concept of horror that we are shown and I think it is well achieved for the narrative that the film wants to cover, it is not the typical horror that will give you a good scare (and more so for me that I am very sensitive with these movies...) but it does leave you intrigued by what is happening, last night in soho presents a horror yes, but one of real life, of the de-humanization of Sandie trying to make a name for himself in the London of the 60's and the "ghosts" he has left behind with his actions.

I must say that I expected a little more from Anya Taylor-Joy, don't get me wrong, what I mean by this is that, with the importance given to her during the promotion and preview of the film, I expected a much bigger role than the one she already had (I mean, for a while I thought that the real protagonist was Anya's character, Sandie) and although her performance was impeccable and on par with the requirements of her character, the performance that left me totally delighted was that of Thomasin Mckenzie, not only her character, but in general the actress, were totally underestimated, and the truth is, the role she played as Eloise was splendid, there was no moment in my opinion where I doubted her performance during the whole movie and she really deserves more credit than the one she received from the viewers and the media.

Actor Matt Smith also gets some credit for the character of Jack who gives the impression of being a gentleman with his gallant attitude, but once he gets what he wants from Sandie he starts to show his true colors, we also have Michael Ajao who plays John, a guy who is interested in Eloise as soon as he meets her and who soon in the movie becomes something like her romantic interest, and who, unfortunately, totally lacks personality beyond being a totally nice and sympathetic guy to Ellie's "craziness", not necessarily a bad performance, but it's a character that in his creation they took the term "supportive" too seriously and forgot to add a little more structure to the character's personality.

Personally I think what fascinated me the most in the film was the visual aspect, it has a very striking and hypnotic cinematography, which only helped to increase the suspense and fantasy vibe in the lives of our protagonists, like the scene where Eloise is on her first night in her new lease and the lights of the neon sign next to her building illuminate her room to introduce us to this "trip" to the past seems to me a marvel, not to mention this continuous shot where Sandie, Eloise and Jack share a dance (which was the scene, by the way, that made me decide without hesitation to see this movie) that to this day still leaves me enchanted. I feel that what most managed to bring me down from that cloud of love and fascination in which I found myself when watching this film was reaching the end, I did not like the use of editing to give life to these ghosts / men who seem to follow Ellie as I came to feel unnatural after so much care to detail that we were shown at the beginning, and the part of her discovering the truth and facing this if filled me with momentary adrenaline, but how it was resolved later was somewhat disappointing, and it is these details that did not end up closing me. Last night in soho, which conquered my eyes and ears but did not win my heart, I think it deserves to be considered one of the best releases of the year we have just left behind, 2021.

I loved this movie. I was only bothered by one detail at the end, but everything else I loved, the performances, the music, the art direction. excellent film.

regardless of the ending, I think the quality of this film is indisputable, it really was a very good film and even better in artistic terms, i am still captivated by the music and the setting, and I can't wait to see what Edgar Wright's next proposal will be like.

thanks for reading :)!

Anya is beautiful and The Queens Gambit was epic! This looks interesting too, will be looking forward to this movie.

Anya has a bright future as an actress ahead of her, and each project only helps to solidify her position as one of the best new actresses, and without a doubt last night in soho helps us to see a new facet in her career, totally recommended!
