I couldn't help but let myself be cajoled by the algorithm, and a few days after watching Poor Things I watched this other spectacular story. The Favourite, also directed by greek Yorgos Lanthimos, takes us back to the Victorian era (18th century) with a controversial comedy full of intrigue and suspense. Hand in hand with a spectacular cast headed, once again, by the beautiful Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, among other spectacular actors that make this plot, another work of art. It is not superfluous to mention that this film also won several awards, and not for less, it is excellent.
No pude evitar dejarme engatusar por el algoritmo, y unos días luego de ver Poor Things me vi esta otra historia espectacular. La Favorita, también dirigida por el griego Yorgos Lanthimos, nos vuelve a remontar a la época victoriana (siglo XVIII) con una polémica comedia llena de intriga y suspenso. Llevada de la mano con un elenco espectacular encabezado, otra vez, por la hermosa Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, entre otros espectaculares actores que hacen de esta trama, otra obra de arte. No está de más mencionarles que este metraje también ganó varios premios, y no es por menos, es excelente.
Argument.
This would be the second work I've seen from Yorgos, but I think he likes to lean along the lines of chapters or stages within his films, as this one features several parts. We are in England, in the midst of war with France, but Queen Anne is ill, so she leaves most of the affairs of state to her personal servant, Lady Sarah. All this, plus the Queen's sympathy for Sarah, is threatened by the arrival of a cousin of the Lady who tries to curry favor with her and the Queen as well.

Este sería el segundo trabajo que veo de Yorgos, pero creo que le gusta inclinarse por la línea de capítulos o etapas dentro de sus films, ya que este cuenta con varias partes. Nos encontramos en Inglaterra, en plena guerra con Francia, pero la Reina Anne se encuentra enferma, por lo que “deja a disposición” la mayoría de los asuntos de estados a su sirvienta personal, Lady Sarah. Todo esto, más la simpatía de la Reina por Sarah, se ve amenazada por la llegada de una prima de la Lady que intenta ganarse también el favor de ella y la Reina.

Abigail, is very clear about her goal: to become noble again, whatever it takes. Y a pesar de que Sarah no confía del todo en Abigail, no puede evitar ver la “real devoción y lealtad” hacia ella y la reina.

Abigail's intelligence, leads her to realize that practically the kingdom is run by Lady Sarah, as she manipulates the Queen at will, according to because she is a patriot first and knows what is best for the Queen and England. All Abigail's movements are no coincidence, she knows with whom to make contact despite her rank as a court servant. While studying in her cousin's personal library, she discovers a huge secret that puts the entire kingdom at risk: Lady Sarah and the Queen are lovers. Todos los movimientos de Abigail no son casualidad, sabe con quiénes hacer contacto a pesar de su rango de sirvienta de la corte. Harley ve una oportunidad de tener como espía y alidada a Abigail, y aunque ninguno se soporta, al final, logran hacer alianzas, aunque siempre a favor de Abigail, quien se lo hizo saber desde un principio. Esto también le sirvió a la sirvienta para crear más mella entre Sarah y Harley, que de por sí ya era bastante, e hizo que Sarah pasara más tiempo en el parlamento atendiendo los asuntos de Estado mientras Abigail jugaba sus cartas con la Reina: ganarse su confianza y aprecio.

The whole story is about manipulation and the thirst for power. Queen Anne is the one who pays for these broken dishes, since, being a lonely and immature woman, she is easily manipulated with a small token of affection that seems sincere to her. That was the perfect opportunity for Abigail to quietly sneak into the Queen's chambers and, consequently, into her bed. She used pleasure and words of love to cajole the Queen and gradually achieve what Abigail wanted so badly: to regain her nobility.

That was the reason for having in her bedchamber 17 beautiful rabbits, one for each loss, whom she loved and cared for madly. In a way, this touched Abigail's cold heart, and she also confessed her bitter secret to him: her father "lost" her in a card bet, confining her to a life of sexual abuse, mistreatment and slavery. "My dream is to regain my pride and nobility, but I will remain a servant", those words also touched the emotions of the Queen, who understood that, somehow, they were both slaves of their past, which made Abigail appreciate even more.

Abigail had already accomplished a great part of her goal, she only had one thing left to solve: to get Lady Sarah out of the way and thus, culminate everything. It was relatively easy, little by little she was poisoning Queen Anne's mind so that she would send Sarah to attend to her affairs far from the palace, while Abigail really poisoned her cousin. This gave her enough time to finish the first stage of her plan. She managed to get the Queen to give her back her nobility at the same time as a husband with rank, to manage the servants at her whim and to gradually take her role in parliament. And although the Queen suffered the disappearance of her beloved Lady Sarah, Abigail did her best not to remember her, but in vain, since the Queen sent for her wherever she went. Both cousins were very surprised when they met again and saw their new situations, one with a new status and the other with a scarred face after being poisoned by the horse and her status hanging by a thread because of Abigail's ambition. They start a war almost to the death to get each other out of the way, each using their own tools, but Abigail ends up winning.

Ya Abigail tenía gran parte de su meta cumplida, solo le quedaba algo que resolver: quitar de en medio a Lady Sarah y así, culminar todo. Le fue fácil relativamente, poco a poco fue envenenando la mente de la Reina Anne para que mandara a Sarah a atender sus asuntos lejos de palacio, mientras Abigail envenenó de verdad a su prima. Esto le dio el tiempo suficiente para terminar la primera etapa de su plan. Logró que la Reina le diera de nuevo su nobleza al mismo tiempo que un esposo con rango, manejar a la servidumbre a su antojo e ir tomando de a poco su papel en el parlamento. Y aunque la Reina sufría por la desaparición de su querida Lady Sarah, Abigail hacía las mil y una para que no la recordara, pero en vano, ya que la Reina mandó a buscarla dónde fuera. Gran sorpresa se llevaron ambas primas al reencontrarse y ver las nuevas situaciones de ambas, una con nuevo estatus y la otra marcada en el rostro tras caer envenenada del caballo y su estatus pendiendo de un hilo por culpa de la ambición Abigail. Empiezan una guerra casi a muerte para sacarse una a la otra del camino, cada una usando sus herramientas, pero terminando ganando Abigail.
It really is a story that has its own thing, it will never cease to surprise us despite its long 2 hours of duration, worthy of a "black comedy". While the ending is somewhat dark and overwhelming, it makes us understand that, at the end of the day, no one can get away with anything. Queen Anne understands late and the hard way that she was manipulated and betrayed by Sarah and Abigail all along, and manages to get back at both of them in a way that no one would think, she hit them where it hurt each of them the most. He ended up stripping Sarah of all her things and banishing her, completely erasing the love they both had for each other; and Abigail fared no better, he made her remember that, although she was "noble", she would still be his servant and he would abuse her as often as he wanted.
De verdad que es una historia que tiene lo suyo, nunca dejará de sorprendernos a pesar de sus largas 2 horas de duración, digno de una “comedia negra”. Si bien el final es algo oscuro y abrumador, nos hace entender que, a fin de cuentas, nadie puede salirse con la suya. La Reina Anne entiende tarde y a la mala que todo el tiempo fue manipulada y traicionada por Sarah y Abigail, y logra desquitarse de las dos de una manera que nadie pensaría, les dio donde más le dolía a cada una. A Sarah la terminó por despojar de todas sus cosas y desterrarla, borró por completo el amor que ambas se tenían; y a Abigail no le fue mejor, le hizo recordar que, si bien era “noble”, seguiría siendo su sirvienta y abusaría de ella las veces que quisiera.
The shooting and the setting was exquisite, I love movies set in this era, the dresses, the decoration, the formality and propriety with which they spoke... in short, those refined details. The truth is that this director has surprised me with these two films, I hope to see some more and continue enchanting me with his stories; so, as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss it".
El rodaje y la ambientación fue exquisita, adoro las películas ambientadas en esta época, los vestidos, la decoración, la formalidad y propiedad con la que se hablaba… en fin, esos detalles tan refinados. La verdad es que este director me ha sorprendido con estos dos metrajes, espero ver algunos más y seguir encantándome con sus historias; así que, como le digo siempre: “Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada.”

Está película me encantó! Aún no he visto poor things, pero recuerdo amar a Emma después de verla en esta película, la historia te atrapa por completo! También me gustó mucho la ambientación es genial, te recomiendo ver The Great, también cuenta con esta estética pero más que todo es una comedia. Excelente reseña 🙌🏻

Sin duda, es un buen largometrajes, me encanta el estilo del director y es una película no predecible, eso me encanta del director.
Recientemente también ví del mismo director a La Langosta.
Estás películas tienen muchísimos contenidos psicológicos, sociales, culturales y otros temas para analizar, igualmente combina una estética muy particular, el uso de la sátira y otros elementos particulares.
