I remember that even before the release of Zach Snyder''s "Army of the Dead" was announced a prequel to the film from the German director Matthias Schweighefer, who plays in the original blockbuster safe cracker.
To tell the truth, the idea of the backstory of this character seemed ridiculous to me. After all, "Army of the Dead" is a movie about zombies, and it is strange to put in the same universe a story about a strange lonely guy. But when I finally looked at The Army... , it became clear that Snyder and Schweighefer miraculously managed to predict the viewer's sympathy for Ludwig Ditter (that same ingenious safe cracker).
"Army of Thieves" is a genre cocktail and therefore is suitable for the general public. I think they would have shown him in the cinema, he could have attracted many people. A lot of things are mixed here, but the director managed to put everything together in such a way that the whole film keeps in suspense and the viewer watches with interest the development of the protagonist. I often even worried about him, despite the fact that I already know his fate thanks to watching The Army of the Dead.
Speaking of zombies. The walking dead are kind of mentioned here as far as. In the news and nightmares of the protagonist. Someone might think that this is a ridiculous attempt to link two stories taking place in the same universe. But it seemed to me that this is a cool move in terms of the fact that it hints at the future of the protagonist.
Jokes ... Despite the fact that the creators approached the film with humor, the jokes here generally do not shine with intelligence. However, they are not flat.
The heroes themselves are pleasant. Even the main macho of the film a la Hugh Jackman is not always disgusting.
I liked the film in almost everything. Perfect for spending a boring evening.
