The total number of nuclear reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was four. The accident took place at 1:23 pm local time on April 26 from the fourth nuclear reactor of the nuclear power plant on the border of Ukraine and Belarus. The accident happened while conducting a test on safe cooling. Workers on night shifts mistakenly pump excess cold water into the turbines of the nuclear reactor. As a result less steam is produced there. This caused the nuclear reactor to heat up and at one point a massive explosion occurred.
Two consecutive explosions at the same time removed the concrete lid weighing about a thousand tons on the fourth nuclear reactor of the power plant and the roof collapsed, creating a huge cavity. When the outside air enters 20 hours after the accident, a huge fire breaks out in contact with the combustible material of the nuclear reactor. The fire lasted for 10 days. As a result, the material created by the nuclear reaction spread to a height of about 1 km in the atmosphere and a lot of nuclear dust caused massive pollution of the environment.
The amount of nuclear material dropped into the atmosphere is equivalent to about five hundred atomic bombs dropped by the United States on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. The resulting nuclear-powered cloud flew over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Eastern Europe, spreading to Scandinavia, Great Britain and even East America.
There were about 14,000 settlements in Chernobyl at the time of the incident. 4 workers died immediately after the accident. Later, 238 people became ill as a result of nuclear radiation, and 31 people died in the first three months, most of them rescue workers.
According to official figures, about five million people were affected by the crash, including six million children. The damage from the crash is estimated at 200 billion. Later, if a child was born there, he would be born with a disability. The city of Chernobyl is now abandoned and almost uninhabited for about 50 miles.
