The game this was based on was one of the reasons I got a PS4 back in the day. I didn't even know this was being turned into a film. The whole notion of the game was meant to be about repeatability - go back and make a decision differently.

I don't think a film helps with that in terms of the style of storytelling. It is linear, it lacks audience agency, and it... well, isn't the game.

The game is a sequence of branching choices. The film is just "here you go", (even with the timeloop) and that is what irks me about so many game to movie adaptations, particularly for games were the story can, and indeed does, change based on your actions.

I do not suppose they could have released 20 different versions to different cinemas / streaming services / dvds / bluray, then had people viciously debate which one was the true movie.

But that would be far too avantgarde.

Yeah I would say more than 80% game adaptations end up way different than the game story, what you just mention about total different movies is very interesting, or at least change key scenes that are or take from each version, thats genius but then again yeah budget, they did this with The Descent in 2005 and there were people who did watch both movies although that time it was intentional because they consider the UK version too dark and less commercial ending that would not fit America audience 😅 ✌️

Oh cool, I didn't know that Descent had done that already! I think the same could be done with books, too! :D
