Hello there fellow movie lover and welcome to my blog! I hope you're doing good today 🙃
Today I want to do something different by talking about a type of movie that I don't normally like to see. I'm really not a fan of Chinese or Korean movies and I tend to judge most of them before even seeing them. These are not the types of movies that I keep in my movie list or plan to see. A movie like Hard Hit would have been no different if I got to know that it was a Korean movie right off the bat.
I found this movie on YouTube when I just happened to come across one of its trailers. I liked the story and it looked really interesting but I did not know that it was Korean. I genuinely thought this movie would be an English movie because the trailer I saw was in English. I was so caught up by how awesome it looked that I did not notice that it was dubbed. I decided that I was going to watch the movie with a friend but when I noticed that it was in Korean, I got angry and was about to turn it off. Luckily, my friend, who likes Korean movies, convinced me to just let it play and I did.
Now, I am going to give y'all a little review about Hard Hit. Keep reading will ya... :)
¡Hola, cinéfilo, bienvenido a mi blog!
Sigue leyendo, ¿quieres? :)
About The Movie/Sobre la película
The story takes place in Busan, South Korea, with a Man, his Wife, a daughter and a son. The man, Lee Seong-gyu, is successful and by all initial accounts, lives an average life with his family. On what seems like a normal day, Lee is supposed to take his kids to school and head to work. On their way, Lee gets a call where a man explains that there is a bomb under his seat that would be detonated if anyone leaves the car or pisses him off. The mysterious makes one demand - Money. Lots of it.
With his two young kids in the car, Lee tries to get the situation under control. However, this would turn out to be a long trip for Lee and the kids as various factors come into play. It turns out that money isn't really what drives this mysterious caller. What then could he want? Can Lee get himself and his kids out of this situation? Who will survive, who will not?
¿Quién sobrevivirá, quién no?
My Opinion about the movie/Mi opinión sobre la película.
Except for anime, I really don't like to see movies or shows that aren't in English. Added to the fast-paced nature of Hard Hit, I really thought I would not enjoy the movie. The thing I've come to notice about most fast-paced movies is the lack of proper character development. I believe that great character development connects the viewer with the characters and helps them feel their emotions better. As for productions that just go straight into the action, most of them just end up being really noisy and crappy.
Hard Hit is a movie I consider as fast-paced. The scenes are quick and most of the dialogues are short. Less than 7 minutes into the show, the call letting Lee know about the bomb came and so the action began. I thought it would just be another fast paced movie that would just come and go without leaving much of an impact but this movie was about to prove me wrong.
To make up for the fast-paced nature of this movie was the great acting by the cast. Despite the fact that there was very little character development, I felt very connected to the characters. Jo Woo-jin, who played Lee, wore very believable facial expressions. In the beginning, he seemed to be an annoying rich smug but in the middle of the movie you start to feel very much sorry for him. The fear, angst and remorse were clear on his face. I'm highlighting his facial expressions so much because there was not much in gesture given that he was mostly behind the wheel. The expressions basically made up the Lee character and , boy, what a powerful character he was.
The kids' characters were are also really good. Lee Jae-in, the girl that played Lee's daughter, plays a character that may seem annoying sometimes but you get to understand her. She's a teenager who has found herself in this overwhelming situation. She's confused and scared but she has to help her younger brother. It's easy to understand when even in the face of impending doom, she chooses to stick by her dad as she cannot imagine life without him.
Lee Jae-in's performance was really good but a character I really want to highlight is the son, Min-Joon played by Kim Tae Yul. There are a lot of good child actors that have impressed us with their display of talent. However, there are also many children cast in movies that look like they don't know what they're doing because, well, they're kids. In the case of Kim Tae Yul, this little man proved that he was a rising bundle of talent. Kim's representation of a child in pain and dire need of help was very believable. I honestly just couldn't believe how well this boy played his part. One minute he was an annoying little child pissing off his dad and sister, the next he was a child in a situation he could not understand. All he wanted to do was play soccer but now it looks like he won't be able to play anymore. This kid's performance has earned him one more fan.
Speaking of which, I think putting a lot of focus on the children was a smart idea by the crew. If it was a guy with two fan girls in the back seat of his car, I don't think I would have gone halfway through this movie. It's natural to connect to kids emotionally much more than adults. In this movie you will see these two innocent kids that unfortunately found themselves in a dire situation. It gets you concerned enough to want to find out who could be so heartless to do this to kids and why? This movie would put you in the father's shoes and make you ask yourself "what would I do?"
More things to appeal to your emotion in this movie are the color and soundtracks. From the dim greenish and bluish color, it was clear that this movie was not going to be a happy one. It gets even sadder when we are shown flashbacks to understand why the family was targeted. The soundtracks just make it better with fast music in fast situations and really dense progressions when it gets really sad.
Now, I have to mention that Hard Hit does not come without flaws. One thing I did not like was how dumb the cops were. When they managed to stop Lee's car and set up a perimeter around it, it was clear that that nobody was supposed to cross their lines. However, it was just stupid when they let a stranger claiming to be Lee's brother go near the car to "convince his brother" just because he said so. From there on, it was really obvious who the guy was before he even started talking. The next dumb thing was when they let a child get kidnapped right in front of them. That part of the fiction was just a little too far from reality.
I also did not like that there was not much closure to this story. We are made to know that Lee began to right his wrongs but it wasn't enough. After connecting with the kids, we don't even get to know what happened to them. Were they treated for injuries? Was there any form of therapy for their trauma? I don't know. I really wanted to know what happened to the boy especially but I guess I can only speculate.
No sé.
Should you watch Hard Hit?/¿Deberías ver Hard Hit?
Hard Hit is a movie with a tense storyline. Even though there wasn't so much character development, the acting was great. Ever element makes it an emotional and sad movie that's worth your time. If you love Korean movies, then, for sure, check it out. If you don't like Korean movies, just try this one. Take it from me, you may just like it.
This movie has a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes but there were just 6 reviews. I'd give it an amateur score of 8/10.

I watched this movie just around last week. It was not as impressive as the other movie from CJ entertainment. I also consider this quite lousy acting from Ji Chang-wook, the main antagonist from the movie and perhaps those who rated it high are his fans 😂. He played a lot of action/thriller movies and series thriller but so far, this one is his worst. Joo Jin woo is the same, I watched too many of his works where he plays the antagonist or sometimes someone with a cool personality and cold. In this movie, it was quite strange watching him plays such role.
I never watch Korean movies because I’ve honestly never liked them but I was impressed with this one. I really don’t know much about Korean actors but yeah I agree that Ji Chang-Wook was a lousy antagonist. Funny thing is that when I looked this movie up, I saw a lot of people hyping the guy up but I honestly wasn’t impressed with his performance. It was just meh. The person that I liked the most was the little boy for some reason 😅
Thanks for stopping by my post!
I like Asian movies, preferably thrillers, there are several movies that are great, with a lot of violence. The ones with action and fights, anything, even a pencil, can be a weapon. I'm going to look for this one to watch.
Ah so you’re a fan of Asian movies too. I guess I’m one of the few people that still hasn’t joined the train. Hard Hit is classified as an Action/Thriller but there really isn’t much action to wow you. Still, the movie has a cool storyline and the protagonist did really well in my opinion. I just like how everything happened on the road and the movie was still good. Just remember that it’s kinda fast paced.
Thank you for reading my post. You’re awesome.
Even if you don't like it, fast movies like this can actually be good. Because when people want a distraction, they want movies like this. Fast and action-packed. I liked your post and added the movie to my list of movies to watch.
Yes you’re absolutely right. Fast movies are good in some cases. Sometimes a person may just need to see a movie that’s quick with action and doesn’t bore them with so many details and long dialogues. For the past few weeks I’ve been seeing movies in more than one sittings but I saw this one in just one night and that’s just because I didn’t have to use my brain so much trying to understand details.
I’m glad you liked my post. I hope you get to see this movie soon.
Thank you for stopping by and for the comment :)
You're welcome, I'm happy to see that we're on the same page :).
