Amid this turmoil, British influence covertly and overtly supported a military coup in February 1921. Major General Edmund Ironside, tasked with safeguarding British interests, replaced Russian officers in the Persian Cossack Brigade with his own appointees, notably Raza Khan. Given free rein, Raza led a nearly bloodless coup on February 20, 1921, marching his forces into Tehran to depose Prime Minister Fatah Al-Amin, effectively removing the Shah's authority.
