Hughes attributes much of anti-Semitic sentiment among Black Americans to the stories they tell themselves about oppression and progress. Because Jews have historically faced severe persecution—from expulsions in Europe, the Holocaust, to being targeted globally—many Black Americans see Jewish success in America as a threat to their own narratives of victimization. They often reinterpret Jewish aid during civil rights movements as a form of racial privilege, which fuels resentment.
