The Steelers’s offensive approach was a surgical restriction on Fields’s natural tendencies. For example, they employed the “drift concept,” a quick screen or dig route paired with a backside smash. The idea was for Fields to read the first option (the dig) or the secondary options once the defense reacted. However, if defensive coverages forced him to read beyond the first look or if something wasn’t perfectly aligned, Fields would bail out prematurely, often throwing short instead of pushing the ball down the field.
