Deathwing's F.R.I.D.A.Y. bot: use it or lose it.

I've got a confession to make.

I've been very stupid about how I secure my Hive account, for years now. If an attacker got ahold of my owner key and just changed it without stealing any money or changing my other keys (active/posting), after 30 days I'd lose my entire account and wouldn't be able to recover it.

Yeah, but, what are the odds of that actually happening?

Exactly, right? The chance that a bad actor has that much discipline is pretty close to zero. Surely they'd just steal the couple thousand dollars in my account and I'd realize that I need to recover my keys. Lesson learned. But still, even after "losing" hundreds of thousands of theoretical dollars to this poorly performing market, my account is obviously still worth a ton, and that's not even counting the underlying reputation of my account itself and how much income I make through blogging and whatever else.

So I finally set up Discord notifications using this bot.

It will immediately tell me when changes to my account are made.
This post will be a short tutorial of how to set it up.

Step 1: Get a Discord invite.

You should be able to get one by visiting the website:
https://friday.deathwing.me/
or
https://discord.gg/CQa7WWzRUf

Step 2: Open DM with with bot.

You can also issue commands within the text channels, but most people prefer to simply talk to the bot directly in DMs.

Step 3: /register *account*

  • Type '/register'

  • Click the popup

image.png

If you try to register without that 'account' widget box showing it's not going to work. Make sure you register your account correctly and check your work by typing '/list'.

/list

Step 4: /settings

With the /settings option the FRIDAY bot will give us a link to a website that allows us to customize the notifications it sends us. There are a ton of options here, and I only use the bot for a couple things because I don't want to be drowned out by notifications, but it can be set up any way the user wants.

There are a TON of options.

Scope them out.
See what you want.

Once the 'update' button is clicked everything should be all set.

Test it out by doing something that should trigger the bot.

Works

And thus concludes the crash course.

Now if my owner key changes (it won't), I will get a notification in Discord and be alerted immediately. Surprisingly useful. I also have it set up to alert me whenever more than 1000 Hive exits my account among a couple other functions. But again, I don't want the bot to send me notifications very often so I keep the notifications to a minimum for my personal setup.

Conclusion

Yet another reason to vote @deathwing, and I suppose @rishi556 is in on this as well so perhaps vote for our @hextech witness as well. Sure, the frontend has zero polish and is just a basic link to the bot, but does it really need to look pretty? If so, go learn Javascript and help us out, would ya? :D

Bots like this have a lot of off-chain utility that can much more easily help us manage our WEB3 accounts and keep them safe and organized. I wrote this post because I'm guessing a lot of people out there don't even know it exists, let alone how to use it. Hopefully this will help someone.

Now that I read your post, I just wondered, can't our Hive account be linked to a cold wallet to approve hive, hbd or hive power transactions? Kind of like how it works with metamask and ledger or trezor wallets.

Yes @engrave has been hard at work setting up hive on ledger, go check them out. :)

Excellent service bot, and very useful notice of it's existence. Given my recent travails and lack of access to Hive, which I resolved only seconds ago, I find this post of inestimable value.

Thanks!

Thanks @edicted very helpful post. Didn’t know this existed.
Have a great new week!

This is really nice and thanks for sharing

I use Friday bot.. It is a great tool. I love it.
Thanks for sharing!

How long have you been using it?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Uhm, since last November I think

Damn. That almost looks fool-proof..

You'd be surprised :D

Oh wow, thank you for that and kudos! Going to explore and use it immediately although my account is yet small :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Hahaha for a malicious hacker 20 small accounts become a very big account XD

Pretty useful bot, love it!
It would be a nightmare to receive a key change notification 😅

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That is correct :l

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for the reminder and instructions.

I haven't used this bot so I'll bookmark this page and look into it when I have time.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Good, but I don't use discord a lot. Is there a Signal or e-mail variant?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I have been using the friday bot for a while now and its a great tool to have an oversight on what your account does.

@edicted, @d-zero(1/1) sent you LUV. wallet | market | tools | discord | community | daily

⚠ The LUV command will soon require a limited number of other "!" commands accompany it. Details here.

Have been using it for such a long time and have been a life savor in many circumstances. Thanks @deathwing!!!

I agree, bots like this are super helpful! I've been using the bot for a few months now and it's helped me a lot. It sends me a message every time my account balance goes up or down. Also, the bot tells me when I get new followers, and when I get new messages. I find that I spend less time checking my account since I started using it.

The other thing I love about the bot is that it helps me see what people are saying about me. Sometimes I'll notice a message mentioning my name and I'll click on it to see what it's about.

I also use the bot to notify me when my Hive engine account balance goes above a certain amount. That's important because I use that account to buy and sell some of my other coins.

Thanks for sharing this post, I think everyone who uses Hive should try the bot out.

Awesome.
I remember when I used the bot but I then just deactivated it as I already was receiving notifications on my Ecency app. But yeah, it could be useful in situations like account security.

How dare you not mention you are part of @hextech, shameless shilling. :p

from the comments garnered off this post , it’s pretty obvious this security bot comes handy for different people using its services. I just joined the party too and I can’t wait to see what the experience feels like .

And doesn't this bot ask you for private keys? Because this is a very incredible idea of development, a very secure system.

Thank you so much @edicted. 🤞 Can't go wrong adding one more layer of security.

don't worry, soon the hive will be worth zero and not worth to steal :P
