How to Improve Your Curation If You Have Low HIVE Power?

in LeoFinance2 years ago

People often do what they see other more successful people do, trying to duplicate their success by copying their actions, but without realizing that sometimes they hurt themselves and their own evolution by doing that.

Today I want to talk a little bit about people who don't have much HIVE Power on their accounts because I often see them using their voting power in the wrong way.

likegfd332eba5_1280.jpg

Before I start, I'd like to say there can be a distinction between what is best for your HIVE rewards and what is best for your tribe rewards. If you are a major holder of CTP but only have a little HP, your CTP rewards will likely be dominant.

At the same time, with HIVE (power) at the root of everything going on in the Hive ecosystem, I'd prioritize increasing my HP to a level I'm comfortable with. I still do that for my own account, and I've been on this chain for over 4 years.

With this in mind and noticing various mistakes people make, I thought this guide would be useful.

How NOT to Vote When You Have Low HIVE Power?

Before I start, I'd like to introduce a notion you might've heard of, but possibly ignored: dust.

On Hive, by dust we understand any post or comment which at the payout time has a value of less than $0.02.

Such a post or comment will NOT receive any HP or HBD rewards - neither author nor curators - and any value if any (for example, $0.01) will be redistributed back to the reward pool. Tribe rewards are not affected though.

If you pay attention to what was said above, wording matters. It doesn't say YOUR vote needs to be $0.02 minimum to matter.

But it does say that if your vote is below $0.02 and you are the only voter (for example), your vote doesn't count for the Hive rewards - not for you, not for the account you vote for.

Voting on Comments or Posts?

With the above in mind, let's analyze the options to vote on comments or on posts if your vote is below $0.02.

I do vote on comments, especially those on my own posts, but sometimes on other posts as well when I read through.

But my 20% upvote is worth $0.05 at today's prices and was more when HIVE had a higher price in dollars. And I use a lower percentage so I can spread my voting power to more people every day, which is something enough people who have at least a dolphin-level stake often do.

But voting on comments is not something you should do, in my opinion, if you have a vote value lower than $0.02. That's because most comments receive at most one vote. If that vote is yours, it's wasted. Both for you and for the comment author. None of you receive the Hive rewards.

You can alternatively use some of those comment bots that distribute 2nd layer rewards, until you have enough HP to have a $0.02 vote. This way you still reward the commenter, but you don't waste voting mana.

What you should do instead is to vote on the post(s) instead, if they are above the dust threshold or you believe they will be. And within the first 24 hours. No need to slash your curation rewards unnecessarily by voting after the first day.

More Tips

Also, here's another tip: for a small account, it's better to share lower curation rewards with a few curators (preferably of similar size, not next to a whale vote) than to be one of the few hundred votes that will share a higher chunk of curation rewards for a popular post.

I hope you have already heard of paying attention to your voting mana.

Don't let it linger at 100% because you are wasting it since it continuously regenerates and it can't go higher than 100%.

Don't drain it too much, as your voting power is reduced proportionally. Normally, if you curate every day, there is no reason for the voting mana to drop below 80% at any point. If you curate more often daily, you can keep it higher than that (I keep it around 88-90%), lowering it more when you go to sleep.

Thank you very much for this post, it comes at exactly the right time because lately I see that my voting power drops too much and it is because I am voting to the comments, and for the moment I am so small that my vote has the value of the minimum that you suggest.

Yes, don't vote on comments anymore. That's my suggestion. Grow your Hive Power first and vote on posts within the first day of their publishing time in the meantime. Not any posts though, these posts need to pass the dust threshold too to receive payment!

I've been thinking through the same things for the last few weeks. I just discovered dustsweeper. I was voting all my commenters with dust for months.

But what I don't understand is why within 24 hours and why not following a whale vote.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

But what I don't understand is why within 24 hours

Because your curation reward halves if you vote after 24 hours and it's slashed 8 times (if I remember correctly) if you vote after 3 days or more.

why not following a whale vote

It's not as much about following the whale vote as it is about how rewards are distributed. The higher the stake which votes (not necessarily its vote amount), the bigger slice of the curation pie it gets. Although there have been so many changes to how curation works over time, I might mix things up with a previous change. Update: Yeah, I double-checked, stake is no longer a factor that influences the proportion of rewards one receives. Rewards are distributed proportionally.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Ah, I didn't know this. This is why curators don't curate posts after a day.

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

Yep, that's why.

I thought that changed on hive with a fork so in my mind it was the same as Leo. I guess I was wrong.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

No, Hive still has these curation windows, but 24h is way better than 5 or 15 minutes, the way it was before.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Ok. It's amazing I've only earned 30 hive for curation and thousands for posting. I had my vote weight multiplier for leo set to 10 which meant that my 10% Leo vote gave out 100% value but only took 1% of my hive vote power.

That meant that my leo votes created hive dust and I never went back to curate my hive to give out value or earn. Left a lot of money on the table for people.

In the last week or so I have increased my curation efficiency up to 6.7%. It was at 3% when I first looked at it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I have my weight multiplier for LEO set at 1 since most of the posts I vote for have the 'leofinance' tag.

If you don't vote for a lot of other non-leofinance content, having a multiplier different than 1 doesn't make sense.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, decent points about the dust.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks! I believe every once in a while they need to be reminded because we get new people in the ecosystem and they do what they see others do, even if that's not good for them, at their level.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

great, those are important tips to pay attention to.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

thanks for dropping by.

Good tips - I hadnt considered this before - thanks !

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

You're welcome.

Wooow!
Thanks for the tips. I am just realising this for the first time. Even now that I have over 0.260 voting power,I don't usually vote on posts that have big whale vote,I prefer voting account with lesser votes. How about that?

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

How's your curation APR? Have you checked?

No
I have not checked it because I don't know how to. Can you put me through?

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

Use HiveStats. You have an 8.22% curation APR which is pretty normal.

PS: By the way, you voted my comment with a dust vote (below $0.02). Remember not to do that in the future. Vote posts instead. Even if you have a full vote above dust level, if it's only a little bit above, it's not worth it to vote on comments, because you need to vote at 100% to be above the dust level.

Either that or use @dustsweeper to vote your votes above the threshold. But you need to fund your account there. It uses your own balance there to vote.

Wooow!
A lot of things to learn on hive community. Learning this one makes me feels great. I wish can ask further questions in the future because I am someone who love to learn.

Feel free to ask questions when you don't understand something.

Ok Sire
Better still,i don't know if you are active on discord?

The dust of 0.02 is a great one to remember. I have low HP and was told about the comment voting scenario early on, but it is a great one for people to pay attention too.

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

Yes, voting on comments when you have dust votes is not wise. The price of HIVE also needs to be considered because you could vote above the threshold in the bull market and then below it in the bear market if you are not paying attention.

Another valid point, watch the Hive price!
thanks for that one as well:)
Have a great new week:)

It is indeed a very useful post!

So, if 10 small account holders vote on a post with 0.01$ voting value each. Means, the total vote value will be 0.10$, curation rewards will be (suppose) 0.05$. In that case, will each of the voters receive 0.005$ as the curation reward after 7 days?

!PIZZA

#listnerds

More or less. Because post dollar value fluctuates until the 7 days to payout is over, based on how the votes are distributed to different posts (including downvotes). But if it hadn't fluctuated, that is how it would work.

Great tips over there. Recently, I also learn about the dust upvotes.

Yeah, that's a lose-lose for both, even if your intention is good.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, it's just good to have learned about it :) Thank you. I hope more will learn about this too.

😲 Had no idea i've been "dust voting" this whole time smh. Thanks for the info !PIZZA

What is the 24 hours comment in reference to?
"No need to slash your curation rewards unnecessarily by voting after the first day."

!PIZZA

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Ah, I thought people knew about this but I guess they don't...

If you vote after 24 hours since the publishing time of a post/comment, you get less curation rewards.

After 24h you get half. After 3 days I think you get 8 times less.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, this is something that many on Hive don't know. I also practice voting for a commenter's last post instead of voting for their comment. Or as a last resort:

I also practice voting for a commenter's last post

That is a great alternative if the post is from within the last 24 hours. Not as much if it isn't, because you lose at least half of the curation rewards, or much more if it's at least 3 days old.

As for the various bot rewards, first thanks. The disadvantage is that most of them spam the blockchain and the post's comments section with needless auto-comments. Not !CTP for example.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Well, yes, I agree. Sometimes there is too much spam from such bots).

Thanks for sharing. I’m sure most noobs around here don’t know about this

Woa, thanks to this new information. I dont know about the min amount needed.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This you usually don't know unless others tell you at some point. I didn't know either at first.

Just small details you pick up in time and you can't know all at once at the beginning.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Actually quite good points about the dust votes, people who have should do this so that their vote does not get wasted

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nice one, good idea and this will definitely help a lot, most especially for the new bies

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's what I was hoping too. Thanks for dropping by.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I believe there are still a few services that will upvote your dust but I have only used dustsweeper. There are limits as they only have so much HP available and you pay for it. I don't really use it much though as I tend to forget to top it off most of the time.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yep, I used it in the past too. Didn't know it's still operational.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It's still operational but I haven't really bothered with it too much. I do want to get my HP higher so I don't have to worry about the dust and I think the lower price of Hive is helping in that regards.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

What I didn't like was that I needed to fund it all the time (or block larger amounts for that purpose), but otherwise, it's useful when other people upvote your comments with dust (but not too low) votes.

I'll be mindful of that. Thanks!

I think for months now, I have been focusing on two front ends that I have significant stakes in. Though my votes don't count in terms of HIVE, at least the commenter is rewarded with those layer two tokens.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's true. But I would advise you to slowly grow your HP too.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, that's what I am doing now. I hope on or before the end of the year, I will reach 1,000 HP plus.

Great information. I will take it to heart belive me.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I will take it to heart belive me.

I hope it will serve you well.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Again, excellent tips from you. A big part of this was news to me so thank you!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks and you are welcome!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is very helpful to really know how to distribute votes.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, it is. Even though I'm not a great curator, but at least I try not to waste my voting mana and it almost hurts me when I see others do that with theirs. :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I vote poets at 100% and comments at 25% this allows the most recent comment to rise to (or near) the top of a comment=laden post for more visibility to the comment author.

Years agi, I tested different levels, and as Goldilocks would say, 25$ was not too much, not too little, but just right. :)

source

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, but since your 25% upvote is currently less than $0.02 you still waste that vote. I understand the reasoning for making real comments visible, but maybe you should use a lower percentage since that's the reason and you waste it anyway?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I hear you, but that was setup when everything was much higher including the VP and the HIVE price. One could say you "wasted" your $0.01 upvote on my above comment as well, but I believe in the future of Hive and hink we'll get those gains back. In the meantime, I may just consider holding off on upvoting comments until then, we'll see. :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

One could say you "wasted" your $0.01 upvote on my above comment as well

That's my 20% vote value on Leofinance, and tribes have no dust, so anything counts. If you look at the same comment on PeakD, you'll see it's almost $0.05. That's the value on Hive, where there's the two-cent dust threshold.

In the meantime, I may just consider holding off on upvoting comments until then, we'll see. :)

Just do what you think it's best. :)
