Twitter Before Elon...

Let me share with you something interesting...

May 2008 is actually the date I joined Twitter (or X or whatever it's called). And during this time, there was a new wave of 'social media' sites that were popping up. And they were all kind of confusing for yours truly. But Twitter was different for me.

I 'got it' as soon as I saw it. I joined right away pretty much during the launch phase of the site and organically grew my account over the years. It was truly the social media platform that I felt the most comfortable in. And over time, I've enjoyed my time on it.

It started out as a fun experience, turned into a place to get news as soon as it broke and then became a place where politics ruled the discussions. Ohhh and don't forget the crypto bros!!

Honestly it was just becoming a place where I wasn't enjoying myself anymore and since February of this year, I've literally used it to keep up on sports news. And then the election happened...

And people on the 'left' felt like they needed their own echo chamber...Excuse me, their own social media platform where they could talk about. Left wing stuff I guess. But this is where Blue Sky kind of filled a niche...

It bills itself as a decentralized social media platform that got it's start within Twitter itself but then became independent a few years ago. I don't even know what that means to be honest because...Decentralized? How? Don't care honestly, but it has become the rage over the past few weeks online.

Let me be crystal clear...I love micro blogging. The entire concept of Twitter always attracted me because, as we have seen, bite sized content is easily digestible and sharable. You don't need to be a Pulitzer prize winning author to attract a following there. It just feels right as a social platform. Which is why I'm so attracted and bullish on $LEO Threads. And we'll get back to that in a second....

But as for Blue Sky, I decided to dive in today and give it a try.

I was hoping for the username jongo, but it was taken...lol So I settled for...

jongoh

Creative...I know.

Anywho, shameless self promotion, if you are not yet on Blue Sky or want to give me a follow, it will be reciprocated :)

But here's the thing about these Twitter clones to me...

Nothing comes close to Threads. Because as decentralized and 'hip' as Blue Sky may be (today) it'll never be true #web3

And the only home I've found in my years of doing this stuff is right here on InLEO specifically with Threads.

We've got such an awesome community, and platform right at our fingertips. And sure, these new platforms are fun, and you never know what may come of it...But for my time and attention, it'll be $LEO :)

How about you?

You find potential in these new Twitter clones? Or what about apps built on the blockchain like InLeo?

As for Blue Sky, I'll poke around....But as soon as I start seeing the political tirades, I'll lose interest real quick lol

I don't bother with the Twitter clones. After I left Twitter and the clones, I felt much better, but I just don't feel like any of the clones will ever beat Twitter. The only time that would happen is if Twitter made a bunch of huge mistakes.

That's a very good point...When you try to clone something it never wins out.

I would love to play a footballanager game on this blockchain :)

Build one :)

My Twitter account dates to about the same time as yours, but I never really got much traction there, and the whole short content format never really held my attention, so Twitter clones are also of little interest, although I will check out Bluesky, just for grins.

It's all warm and fuzzy over there now...But the honeymoon phase won't last lol

Most social media have later evolved toxic. That's why I prefer news from hive and Leo. Too much noise and you end up learning nothing.
Never heard of bluesky, incoming indeed.

It's true. No one is winning on social media.

And people on the 'left' felt like they needed their own echo chamber...Excuse me, their own social media platform where they could talk about. Left wing stuff I guess. But this is where Blue Sky kind of filled a niche...

I do feel this is isn't really fair. People moved to Mastodon, Post, Threads (Meta) and Bluesky for a couple of reasons... firstly a bunch of journalists got kicked off Twitter for reporting on how the elonsjet account was kicked off. The orgs like NPR got kicked off. Then the Trust and Safety team was fired so people were suddenly getting all sorts of threats and advertisers fled because their ads were being shown next to racist and sexist tweets. Then disinformation accounts like Alex Jones were allowed back while journalists like Ken Klipp were kicked off. Finally, anyone not paying for blue checkmarks find it so hard to get any traction at all. It's pay to play now.

People I know were devastated to leave Twitter, especially after a full decade of tweeting daily, but the amount of hate they were receiving every day just made it impossible to stay.

And what was it like for people on the right before ELon took over? Works both ways. The pandering to right or left wing though is insane. As human beings we should be able to discuss things in an open platform without censoring and removing content. Why we all believe in this platform but will it ever gain traction?

I don't think people on the right were being censored at all on Twitter. Things like death threats and racial slurs and misinformation were censored, but conservatives have always been extremely welcome on Twitter and have had absolutely massive followings. Some of the biggest accounts on Twitter have been conservative accounts.

In regards to platforms... nothing draws a crowd like a crowd. What content is on Hive that would draw a big crowd?

I'm glad that Hive overall has gotten away from the mentality that short form content is of no value. The purists of long form content fought with creators for years, called it low quality and that hurt adoption.

That's a good thing that slowly it's becoming more welcoming to short form content. Video is the key. Once 3speak gets shorts back on Threads, that will help. Anything with short form video will draw a crowd. But unless people feel like their friends are here...Not sure what will work to capture the masses.

Bluesky is just as centralized as Twitter. If you really want a decentralized Twitter clone, check on Mastodon. See my post today for a few brief words about it. I'll try to follow you as soon as I can figure out the strange Bluesky/Mastodon link (mentioned in my post).

I don't think anyone that is going to BlueSky these days cares about decentralization. I think that was one of the greatest marketing blunders $HIVE did, was focus it's message on being decentralized. I think people wanna go where their friends are. Which is BlueSky right now, until it's not cool anymore LOLOL

Appreciated!

Microthreads are one of the great features that decentralized or semi-decentralized social media could be successful to initiate. The great factor of it is that, it can go out to attract more of the people, engage in little hot discussions and then increase the interactive qualities to the most.

Thats the edge of threads features, so as for inleo and we now could see that "premium" features was also added to make it look professional.

That's the biggest thing we need...To attract new people that want to come here and bring their friends!

I think people will stick with the original. But the more options there are to choose from, the better for users.

Agreed. Choice is good...And the market will decide which is successful
