The holiday season is a magical time, filled with joy, family, and festive cheer.
However, I am sure that most of us agree that it can also be a stressful time for our wallets and schedules. Between gifts, decorations, travel, and all the festive food and drink, our expenses can quickly spiral out of control. Not to mention the pressure to get it all done leaving us feeling totally fluffed.
So this year...
Let’s reclaim the joy of Christmas 🎄🎅 by implementing some simple time and money-saving strategies.
Planning is Your Secret Weapon
I am sure you have heard of the saying from Benjamin Franklin....
"If You Fail to Plan, You Are Planning to Fail"
Simply put, the key to a stress-free and budget-friendly Christmas lies in planning.
So Start early and PLAN!
Creating a budget and a to-do list well in advance will prevent last-minute panic purchases and rushed decisions.
- Set a budget: Determine how much you can realistically afford to spend on gifts, decorations, food, and other expenses. Stick to it! Use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track your spending and avoid overspending.
- Make a gift list: Jot down everyone you need to buy a gift for and brainstorm gift ideas to keep within your budget. This prevents impulse buys and ensures you don't forget anyone. Think of making instead of buying. Most of us appreciate a hand made gift compared to some plastic tat bought in China that will just end up in the landfill.
- Plan those meals: Create a menu for Christmas dinner and other holiday meals or gatherings. Make a shopping list and check your cupboards for existing ingredients. This cuts down on last-minute grocery runs and food waste whilst being friendly to your wallet!
Savvy Smart Shopping Strategies
Now that you have a plan in place it's time to shop smarter, not harder.
- Shop early and online Beat the holiday rush and take advantage of early bird deals and online discounts. Compare prices across different retailers and make use of price comparison sites. Don't forget to use coupon codes and/or cashback websites to save even more.
- Consider homemade gifts Personalized hand and homemade gifts are often more meaningful and budget-friendly than store-bought items. Why not bake cookies, craft ornaments, crochet knit or make garments. Or what about creating personalized photo albums and of course making your own Christmas cards.
- Embrace DIY decorations Get creative and make your own decorations using affordable materials like pinecones, ribbons, and recycled items. This is a fun activity to get the whole family involved and is also a great way to save money on store-bought decorations.
- Secret Santa or gift exchanges For large families or groups of colleagues and friends then consider organizing a Secret Santa or gift exchange. This sets a spending limit and reduces the number of gifts you need to buy.
Time-Saving Hacks
The holidays can be a whirlwind of activities and we are forever hearing about mums having a breakdown in the kitchen while granny is getting drunk on sherry and hugging the Christmas tree.
These time-saving tips will help you stay organized and enjoy the season without feeling overwhelmed.
- Batch cooking and prepping Prepare dishes or components of meals in advance and freeze them. This saves time on Christmas Day and other busy days.
- Online grocery shopping or curbside pickup Avoid crowded stores and long checkout lines by ordering your groceries online or using curbside/collection pickups.
- Delegate tasks Don't try to do it all on your own. Ask for help from family members or friends with things like wrapping gifts, setting the table, or picking up groceries and any guests needing a lift.
- Set realistic expectations It's okay if everything isn't perfect. Live in the Now. Focus on enjoying the moments with loved ones rather than stressing for an unattainable ideal.
Experiences Over Things
Remember, the true spirit of Christmas is about spending time with loved ones and not accumulating material possessions that often just end up in a landfill anyway.
Consider gifting experiences rather than things. This could be tickets to a concert, a cooking class, or a weekend getaway. These create lasting memories and often cost less than physical gifts.
By implementing these time and money-saving tips we at MMO wish you navigate the holiday season with ease and focus on what truly matters: celebrating with family and friends.
So this Christmas, let’s prioritize happiness, making connections and long lasting memories and let's ditch all the financial and emotional stress.

One tip I use is to cut the plastic tooth paste package when its "empty". There is enough in there for a couple of more tooth brushing sessions 😅🎅
Oh that is a good one, often people throw plastic tubes/containers without really emptying them out. Save the pennies it all adds up!
