The media tell lies. Don't believe everything you see in the media.

Hello, everyone.

Thanks to technology, gone are the days where we only got to see what was really happening around the world through the papers. Those days, without the papers, you were left in the dark, but today we have our phones and laptops, and with that, we stay updated about what is going on in the world today. The paper company is slowly running out of business, and it is all as a result of the continuous evolution of technology. Not everyone buys the paper again because they now have a choice. You can either read from your device or buy paper. Since reading from your device is a lot cheaper, many people prefer to read from their phones and laptops.

Lately, every software application on our phones has been a source of news. On WhatsApp, we have individuals who have dedicated their time to hunting for news and their WhatsApp status as an avenue to spread the news. We also have Facebook, where we get news about happenings in our world today. We also have numerous sites where you can go to read news and get informed. Due to the fact that we have so many sources, sometimes we no longer know which source is right and which source is wrong; we just digest everything, and at the end of the day, many of the things we see in the media are just lies and not true.

Sometime back, I almost lost a childhood friend because I believed a rumor going around on Facebook without confirming it. My dad is a soldier, so many of my friends their dads are soldiers too. Due to the insurgency in the northern part of my country Nigeria, the deaths of soldiers have become normal, and no one doubts the news of the demise of any soldier, as no one is above death and almost everyone is sent there to keep the peace. Soldiers are dying every day; you just have to be within the barracks or nearby to know that.

That fateful day, I saw a picture of his dad posted on Facebook with the rest in peace caption, and without verifying, I rushed to construct a very good condolence message and send it to him. He wasn't online when I sent the message; I even went ahead to post a picture of his dad with a rest in peace caption too, as we always do for everyone as we are believed to be one big family. The barracks are the only place you go, and you see people cohabiting peacefully. Compared to the outside world, there is more love among soldiers and their families.

We went to their house, and it was unusual. Normally, half the barracks community should be in their house, but there was no one there. He stepped out and explained how angry he was because his dad was still alive. The only thing is that he was critically wounded in an attack, but rumors had already gone around that he was among those killed. He told me he was angry at me because he did not expect me to be among those who would wish his dad death. I tried as much as I could to explain to him how it happened, but he was not willing to give me any listening ears at the moment. We later worked things out, and since then I have realized that the media lie and never to believe everything we see on the media, and if you want to believe what you see on the media, verify first.

What a rumor you heard, the source behind the rumor should be cautioned cause before posting such information online there should be some investigation, you who don't know anything went ahead to post as well, making you lose your friendship.

It's heartbreaking.

I was shocked that day, I was left speechless for sometime. I learnt my lesson, I do t believe the media easily
