LeoGlossary: Could Microblogging Be The Breakthrough For Hive?

in LeoFinancelast year (edited)

We all know the story with Hive.

There is a ton of great technology, a committed community, and applications that people can actually use. Unlike much of the blockchain world, Hive is not something that is built upon hype. We have real world solutions in development, many of them in at least MVP form.

Nevertheless, adoption is rather slow. This is stunning when we consider all that is being offered here. Perhaps the idea of being a "blogging" chain isn't going to fly. Fortunately, we are far from that these days.

Over the past few months, microblogging has gotten attention. On a recent broadcast of CryptoManiacs, we had DBuzz on sharing the progress that application is undergoing. From the sounds of it, there is a major upgrade coming near the beginning of the second quarter. This could radically alter the way people log on, especially with the ability to post off-chain through the app.

Then we have our very own LeoThreads.

Like DBuzz, we are awaiting a major update, actually a rework of the entire Leofinance frontend. This is going to be LeoThreads centered, bringing microblogging to the core of the platform.

The question is whether this could be the breakthrough Hive is looking for?

Appealing To A Wider Audience

It cannot be disputed that long-form blogging holds little appeal to most Internet users. We can see why a platform like Twitter became so popular. People are not going to write 750 word articles unless they are serious content creators. However, most will give a quick reply to a thought they see posting on that platform.

Here is where microblogging can be a powerful entryway for Hive. Imagine if we are able to attract even 100K users. That is not an overwhelming amount when we consider the numbers online. However, it would radically change the face of Hive engagement.

It also is a feeder system into the other applications. Fortunately, on Hive, the user account is good for any application that is tied to the blockchain. There is no need to think of anything as segragated here. It all feeds into the same system.

When I see some of the Lions on Twitter, it is amazing how many transactions they are conducting. If Hive captures just a portion of the content that is going on Twitter, we could really see the numbers explode. On-chain transactions that are quantified could be passed around.

Those in cryptocurrency have long discussed the "Killer DApp". Could it be something that is so common? After all, most are aware of Twitter and it is not really something that has a strong moat.

Another way of looking at this is as a feature. While Twitter is microblogging, on Hive it is just a feature. I understand that Elon Musk is adding more to his platform, including long-form content. However, with Hive, we already have some of the basics in place.

Thinking Long-Term

What will microblogging on Hive look like in 5 years?

Long-term is something I always profess. There is no point in trying to size things up right now. It is simply too early. A lot more building is required, including some basic infrastructure.

That said, if we think about things on a daily basis, in terms of activity, effort, and content, what will things look like another 60 months from now?

On the last AMA, Khal was hit with the idea of adding a counter to LeoThreads. The concept was to have one tracking the daily total and another for lifetime. Imagine getting to the point where we have a billion threads posted.

Certainly this won't happen overnight. However, if we have this is a focal point of Hive, or at least Leofinance, we could see engagement skyrocket.

The key here is that most anything is acceptable. Having a niche in terms of focus can be good for the overall site. However, when it comes to mass appeal, we have to allow general content.

Anyone who is on LeoThreads can see that. There is all kinds of stuff being posted, much of which is nothing to do with finance, investments, or markets. Instead, it is just people dropping whatever is on their mind.

It is quite refreshing. Personally, there is nothing that I saw which detracts from the general tone of Leofinance. The "qaulity" stuff in the long form section is still there. This is an addition that simply allows people to "let their hair down" (for those who have hair).

Here is a threadstorm that was posted earlier today. This is one that was taken from a post. The simple fact is we can add finance/cryptocurrency based content to LeoThreads if desired. In fact, that might be what gets the bigger rewards, as evidenced by this post.

Basically, we are seeing the flexibility to get creative with our content.

So what do you think? Is microblogging the breakthrough feature for Hive?

Did you hear about Damus? It was just launched on the Apple store. I think it has messaging, micro blogging, and payments with BTC on the lightning network. Supposedly it is decentralized too. I doubt I will check it out. I am too committed to Hive. It's interesting though. There is definitely competition out there.

I heard someone mention it. Of course, being on Lightning means that it is not going to end up decentralized. Lightning is going to end up in the hands of a few node operators.

@brianoflondon has been talking about that and he knows more about Lightning than anyone else I know on Hive.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing many of these platforms will truly be decentralized. Except for us of course.

I hope that treads are not only about finance. I would love to be part of Leo, but since I don't have nothing to say about markets I can't participate periodically there.

Say that I think that dbuzz is a great project and deserves much more

It could well be the breakthrough for Hive. There seems to be a lot to talk about and microblogging makes it easy to pen down your thoughts and share it with the community and also potentially get rewarded for it. I was reading a previous post of yours about micro earning and it exposed me to the concept of utilizing threads to supplement one's Hive income. I think microblogging will be a game changer for Hive.
