Very interesting article. I agree the need for RCs will drive Hive. I am not sure Splinterlands will be the one to do that. Yes we saw a lot but they use Custom JSONs which are relatively cheap.
I dont know the plans of the team enough to comment intelligently. Perhaps they will drive a lot more traffic with upcoming additions.

Custom JSON's for the game might be cheap but it's the rental bot that is draining RC's.
The amount of JSON's that it produces to keep changing the price of cards is quite big for a collection with a couple of thousand cards that keep needing to be adjusted through out the day.
So in essence it's not just the game that creates demand but the external economy that is also based on hive.
With the game splitting into two modes and crafting coming early next year on land i would assume that these will create even more transactions alongside the extended market and require accounts to need even more RC to operate within their eco-system.
Now we just need ten more apps just like this and things will get very interesting.
