From tolar to dollar / Od tolaru k dolaru

ENG (Česky dole)

Do you know the "robot" word is coming from Czech? Everyone knows it in our country. But not everyone knows, the "dollar" has roots in the Czech word "tolar".

If we could travel to the 16th century, we could use the Jáchymov thalers. Those coins were minted from the exceptional quality metal. The successful standard was imitated by many countries in the next centuries of Europe. We know about "tallér" from Hungary, "daler" from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Holland or "tallero" from Italy.

The Dutch coins were used to pay in the Dutch colony in the New World, which later became New York. And there were a few short steps to the dollar...

If the Czech Mint minted this really exceptional and beautiful coin, I had to own one of them at least.

Three Jáchymov thalers are presented on the reverse side and three US dollars are on the obverse. The US dollars design comes from the first dollars minted by US in 1794.

Pokud bychom mohli odcestovat do 16. století, mohli bychom používat Jáchymovské tolary.

Právě Holanďané jím platili ve své kolonii v Novém světě, kterou my dnes známe jako New York.

The word "dollar" has its origins in the German word "thaler," which was a shortened version of "Joachimsthaler". “Thal” means valley, and “thaler” indicates a person or thing from the valley.

Czech "Tolar" is derived from the German word. It is important to mention that during the era of the Holy Roman Empire, German was very popular in Czech.
