100 Years of Diesel Engine (10 Deutsche Mark, 1997)

What's up plebs!

If you are a regular follower of my blog then you know that I own a shit ton of commemorative silver coins from Germany, the main reason being that it's the kind of silver I can get closer to spot.

Usually these coins feature some popular German figure like a painter or a scientist or a computer. Or some popular German monument.

But today's coin is a bit different, featuring.. a diesel engine. Which is a German invention 😆

So, this coin was issued in 1997 to commemorate the 100th year since the invention of the diesel engine, which was developed by the German Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel.

Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel (18 March 1858 – 29 September 1913) was a German inventor and mechanical engineer who is famous for having invented the Diesel engine, which burns Diesel fuel; both are named after him. source

The text on this side is pretty self explanatory. 100 years of diesel motor. Straight to the point, as you'd expect from a German piece 😆

As always, a unique design of the German imperial eagles.. Those Germans love their eagles. And I do too, so no complaints 🦅 🦅😍😍

Once again, self explanatory text. Denomination, minting date etc etc.

Moving on to the engraved edge:

It reads

GEDANKEN SIND DER MOTOR DER WELT

Which translates to

THOUGHTS ARE THE ENGINE OF THE WORLD

I couldn't find much info on this quote, neither in the original text or the translated version so I guess it's something smart and related to the context of the coin:)

And this pretty much concludes the historical aspect and stuff on the coin!

When it comes to silver, it follows the typical pre 2000 recipe of German commemorative coins.

15.5 g of 0.625 purity, which amounts to 9.7 g of pure silver.

Today's spot stands at 0.91 $ giving us a melting value of almost 9$. Neato!

Hopefully silver will keep climbing like it has been doing the past few months. It would be nice to hit 1$ per gram ^_^

And this pretty much concludes today's coin. Definitely one of the most unique German commemorative pieces I have shown you and I am really happy mine's in great condition.

One of my favorites, just for standing out compared to my other German coins. And I guess if a must have coin for anyone into engines and stuff!
