No business is risk free and so is poultry farm business especially raising broiler chicken is one that need extra attention and care for one to be successful in the business.
Raising broiler chickens successfully is one that requires total attention and care to their environment and health right from day old chicks (DOCs) to maturity stage. To prevent mortality, breed healthy and fast growing birds, I follow a guide that emphasis on proper brooding, healthy environment and good ventilation, vaccination, multivitamins, quality feeding, biosecurity and proper management.
Proper Brooding
When talking about brooding in broiler chicks, the first two weeks of a broiler’s life are the most delicate and fragile since they are yet to regulate their body temperature and need external heat to keep them warm and healthy. I make sure to have heated the pen before chicks arrive to maintain their body temperature and used bedding materials most especially clean sawdust to keep them dry and warm.
Good Ventilation
Good ventilation is another factor to pay close attention to because availability of fresh air for the birds is vital for preventing respiratory problems. My pen was design in a way to allow cross-ventilation without exposing the chicks to direct cold drafts. With proper ventilation, it helps to reduce ammonia reduces from bird's dropping which can cause harm to the birds’ lungs and eyes.
Vaccination
Vaccination is another critical factor in poultry farm business which requires a proper guide. When vaccinating birds, if it's not done properly then it can leads to vaccine failure which could lead to mass mortality. To ensure my birds are safe , I follow a proper vaccination guide to protect my birds from common deadly diseases such as Newcastle disease, Marek's disease and so on. I make sure to vaccinate my birds properly based on their age and dosage to help build strong immunity.
Multivitamins
Multivitamins are very good when raising broiler chickens as it helps in boosting immunity, reduce stress of vaccine or transportation. I ensure to add multivitamins to their drinkers to aid fast recovery, improve feed conversion rate and promote growth.
Good Feeding
Without using quality feed then you're going no where or just decieving yourself for birds to miraculous grow bigger overnight. I always ensure to give my birds high quality feed that contains the right balance of minerals, protein, energy and vitamins. I ensure that to clean feeders daily to avoid contamination and provide the birds with drinkable, clean and cool water.
Biosecurity
Many poultry farmers especially new poultry farmers neglect this factor which can leads to total loss of birds if care is not taken. Biosecurity is another vital factor in poultry farm business which helps to prevent diseases by limit people's visitation to my farm, permanent footwear in the pen and I ensure the environment is clean and other equipmen used in the pen.
Proper Management
And lastly, proper management is required in poultry farm by regularly observing checking their activities such as signs of illness, abnormal droppings and irregular feeding. And I always ensure to properly disposed dead birds to prevent spreading of infections.
I believe that by consistently following these steps, I maintain a healthy flock with minimal losses. Proper brooding, good ventilation, vaccination, balanced feeding, multivitamins, and strong biosecurity work together to help produce healthy broilers that reach market weight faster, while ensuring profitability and sustainability.
