Stability AI, die Firma hinter Stable Diffusion, ist in Turbulenzen und erlebt gerade sein Open AI-Drama.
Sam Altman wurde als CEO gefeuert, weil er nicht "ehrlich" ("candid") zum Vorstand war, der Founder von Stable Diffusion Emad Mostaque ist zurückgetreten, weil die Firma kurz vor dem Bankrott steht.
In den vergangenen Monaten hat Stability AI versucht, seine KI-Modelle zu kommerzialiseren, von Open-Source abgewandt und praktisch das gesamte VC-Kapital verbrannt.
Laut Forbes-Bericht ist das Unternehmen in ernsten Zahlungsschwierigkeiten, führende Mitarbeiter sollen das Unternehmen bereits verlassen haben und vor Kurzem musste auch der CEO und Founder Emad Mostaque zurücktreten, da er es nicht geschafft hat, neues Kapital von den großen Tech-Firmen zu lukrieren.
Neben Stable Diffusion hat Stability begonnen auch Audio-Generatoren und Sprachmodelle zu entwickeln und versucht diese zu kommerzialiseren. Mit mäßigem Erfolg.
Die Wahrheit ist, dass die KI-Modelle oft für den kommerziellen Einsatz noch nicht gut genug sind und sich nur schwer kommerzialisieren lassen. Dazu kommt die große Konkurrenz von Open AI, Microsoft, Anthropic etc.
Und dem nicht genug, Stability AI hat auch Urheberrechts-Verfahren am Hals, ein rechtliches Risiko, das über die gesamte KI-Branche wie ein Damokles-Schwert hängt.
Sollte die EU, UK oder die USA urteilen, dass das Trainieren von KI-Modellen dem Urheberrecht unterliegt, könnte das die gesamte KI-Branche zu Fall bringen.
Vor allem für die EU, die keine finanzstarken Big-Tech-Unternehmen hat, könnte das fatal sein. Die KI-Entwicklung würde sich dann in Länder mit weniger restriktiven Urheberrecht und KI-Regulierung verlagern.

Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, is in turmoil and is currently experiencing its Open AI drama.

In recent months, Stability AI has tried to commercialize its AI models, turned away from open source and burned through virtually all of its VC capital.
According to a Forbes report, the company is in serious financial difficulties, leading employees are said to have already left the company and recently the CEO and founder Emad Mostaque also had to resign because he failed to attract new capital from the big tech companies.
In addition to Stable Diffusion, Stability has also started to develop audio generators and language models and is trying to commercialize them. With moderate success.
The truth is that the AI models are often not yet good enough for commercial use and are difficult to commercialize. Added to this is the huge competition from Open AI, Microsoft, Anthropic etc.
And that's not all, Stability AI is also facing legal proceedings over copyright, a legal risk that hangs over the entire AI sector like a sword of Damocles.

They failed for one simple reason, they didn't make enough money. I you can't monetize a product you go under. I've run enough businesses over the years to know that even if you have a great idea, you have to have a viable revenue source in mind before starting.
I hope they don't regulate AI out of the EU and US, but politicians often don't understand what they are trying to regulate so the regulations fails....
It's really a pity, also for the open source development, think Stability AI was spending too much money, training too many AI models instead of focusing on Stable Diffusion.
I think it will be bought out but probably at a lower price. Some companies might think that the underlying technology is worth the money as it would help them in the AI race.
I have tried stable diffusion, no wonder bankrupt, they released all for free
