So..... Where were we??? A quick recap on yesterdays blog:

  • I used to have a life that didnt revolve around work and my kids
  • I frequently enjoyed days out metal detecting
  • Mr Welshstacker was pregnant with baby no1 - 1/2pint
  • We were having a clear out of all the interesting artifacts i had accumulated junk
  • I had started listing items on EBay

While those bullet points pretty much sum up the blog, the full post can be found and enjoyed in its fullest HERE.

Now that we're back up to speed, ill carry on with the story! Having successfully listed and sold several items, mostly old shoe buckles, lead dress weights and a few old pieces of broken farm equipment, I begn to start listing the juicy stuff....

At the bottom of the plastic bag, only a few items remained! A nice broach(possibly Roman), a few old but unidentifiable coins(and I mean old by UK standards not by USA standards, so a good few hundred years not the the 1880+.... hahaha) and that brass looking ring shape with an inscription inside.

I listed the ring as "ring found while metal detecting", unknown age, unknown material, incription inside reads - **FEARE GOD AND LOVE MEE". Started bid was £0.99, with no reserve, and off i went to bed.

When i woke up the next morning, and to my absolute shock/amusement, the ring had already climbed to £800!! Bidding had started late the previous evening, and 2 bidders had entered into a bidding war. Obviously, this caught my eye! How could a brass ring be worth £800?? Excited, I called Mrs W over, her words " what have you gone and done now...?" My reply - I really dont know.

Were all early birds in our house, im up early, im out the house early. Sat in work all day, my minds fixed on that ring and what it could finally reach. Would I see four figures?? One thousand pounds (£1000) would be insane for a piece of junk thrown in a plastic bag for over a year.

On my lunch break, I get the oppertunity to take a look at the listing. £1800 What yhe actual FU*K..... The two bidders from last nights action had continued where theyd left off, plus I had a third party bidding on it now. Where was this ring going to end up?

Then things took a turn for the worse.

Feeling on top of the world, and like nothing could go wrong, I began to recieve emails and questions about the listing. One email particularly sticks in my head, but most of them were along the same lines -

"I HOPE YOU HAVE DECLARED THIS RING AS TREASURE BEFORE LISTING IT ON EBAY? I HOPE YOU HAVE INFORMED THE FINDS LIASON OFFICER AT THE MUSEUM? HAVE YOU TOLD THE POLICE YOU FOUND THIS RING, DONTBWORRY IF YOU HAVENT, I HAVE DONE IT ON YOUR BEHALF!"

That email really knocked the wind out of my sails. From being on cloud 9, to thinking what have i got myself into here.... Going with the mantra that ignorance is bliss and finders keepers, i chose to ignore the emails at first, but they were definitely playing on my mind.

Bidding at this point had passed the £2000 point, and whilst I should have been over the moon, that little nagging feeling in the back of your brain was beginning to surface. The higger the bidding got, the more and more nervous i had become. What was it i really had found??

I could take no more, so to quell the feeling of "holly shit" what have i actually got here, I reached out to the most official sounding name of the bidders on the ring. A lovely chap got back to me almost straight away. We exchanged a few emails, where i explained what i thought i had and how i had come about it. He explained that he owned a jewellery shop in London, and that he specialised in ealry "posy rings" and historical jewellery.

The guy was from BERGANZA jewelers and that he would help in anyway he could, and that I should possibly contact my local finds liason officer(FLA), before doing anything else.

I instantly searched the internet, looking for a contact name and details of my FLA. The links all took me direct to Wales' National Museum in Cardiff. With slight trepidation, and a tremble in my fingers, i dialled the number and waited for the guy to pick up......

I think we will leave it there for today! Ive got you all hooked now, so you better come back tomorrow for the next part of this fascinating story.

Oh dang, I never would have guessed either. I am not even aware they have anything like that here in the states. Then again, we don't have the kind of history here that you guys do over there. I look forward to seeing where this goes. Obviously you didn't end up in jail unless they let you have computers there!

Awesome contents. Good to let the police be aware of every suspected issue

Wow! I can't wait to hear how this turns out!

Here in the US, it's finders keepers. It's kind of sad you have to report it and the government gets involved.
