No Device? No Problem! Or, How not to Lose it when you don't have Electronics! [WE:122]

We are back on the best weekend community in Hive for the #weekend-engagement initiative. Brought to you by the one and only G-dog. Sorry for the publicity act. It seems fitting since the G-dog is a businessman. This idea of weekend related topics are always food for thought. I love them even more when I get the chance to share some of my projects around here.

My choice for this week is:

The no-device weekend
You have no computer, mobile phone or gaming console for the entire weekend. Write at least 350 words about how you feel and why and how you handle having no devices to occupy yourself with.

To this I say "No device? No problem!"

There's always plenty to do at home during the weekends. Since I've been doing this content creation challenge to get myself into a better creative discipline, the weekend are the right place to organize my weeks. However, they are still the days when I make a lot of progress on my builds.

Last weekend I made some progress on this one. I could finally complete the task of rounding the neck. Before doing it I did a lot of work getting the frets and position markers on. So, what's left? Tons and lots of sanding. So, no devices for the weekend? I would be able to get this as smooth as a baby's behind in no time. I wouldn't feel my arms afterwards, that's for sure.

I think electronics keep us out of focus. However, trying to create content means having a device always on. It is a sort of paradox, but one should be able to have some free time of not creating anything for other people but oneself. Or at list that's my perception of the idea.

What's else would I tackle during this black-mirrorless weekend? Well, there are other 3 instruments still in process. I would go ahead and install purflings and bindings on two of them and go ahead and remove the sound board that was broken during an accident.

More to do? Sure! I need to hone all my tools. Do you know how much time that takes? Hours! One hour to soak the whetstone. And quite some time from chisel to chisel. Then, the knives. It is an awesome thing to do. But I'm sorry. There won't be any ASMR since there won't be a way to record. Have you listened to a ceramic whetstone grinding steel? It gives me goose bumps each time. Such a wonderful sound.

And this is just regarding my DIY shenanigans.

In the music department, there are some things pending in my list. A few more solos that need some refining until I can record them. The only downside of having no devices for this part is that I do not have one of those metronomes. I usually use the phone for that. I guess I'll need to use my own heartbeat to keep on measure.

And that's easier said than done. Plenty of new exercises are waiting for me to learn them properly.

I also enjoy the idea of going for walks. Houses around the neighborhood are beautiful and we have a nice view of the sky as well. Just look at this:

I took it this morning on my last lap. I wouldn't be able to share the view, but that wouldn't stop me from enjoying a whole lot of it.

But there's something more I would do that requires concentration and skill.

Next Saturday, I'm going to moderate a cultural activity about the art of luthierie. It is an awesome chance to show my work in town. I'm also having some special guests to join me in this conversation about the craft. Besides that, it will be the first time I perform as a soloist in front of a lot of people. So a weekend without distractions would be the best thing ever to finish setting up the details of this activity.

These are some of the ways I could keep myself busy while not using devices for the weekend. What would you do if you had to do the same?

Check out this guitar made from colour pencils...

Oh, yeah. Those builds are sick! I need to make something like that in the future.

I have a problem, I can't be with out my cell with out getting anxious.... But I do enjoy reading and maybe doing a bit of crochet although I still need tutorials lol

Oh, well. Everyone would find ways to cope with the idea of not using gadgets. I think FOMO is a big problem related to having a phone. Too bad the only cure is exercising self-discipline to do thing differently. But that's also really scary!

You are so right Andres, the enemy of boredom is creativity and I think we lose so much time to our devices these days. I try to limit my time on screen as there's always loads of other stuff I'm involved with and I don't spend any time on FB or Instahashtagshenanigans, I find it quite liberating to not be tethered to those platforms.

Best of luck making all those instruments, you'd come out feeling so accomplished!

Hey, Emma. Thanks for stopping by. Oh, yeah..I try to limit that too. But I spend a little too much on Hive. However, I'm always networking here and generating value, so it's like my second job. And I agree how we lose too much being tetherded to these boxes and cables. Good thing my tools are sharp enough to cut all.

Best of luck making all those instruments, you'd come out feeling so accomplished!

Thanks a lot! I hope you have a great weekend doing all your awesome outdoors activities!

No device weekend will surely don't affect me too much since I am not so addicted and I know there are other things to do in the weekend

Hey, that's the beauty of still being human even when there's a lot of technology around. Great to know I'm not the only one.

Have a great weekend!

Oh, the work we get done when we put down our phones!!! Even just staring into space is amazing. Yesterday I lay for an hour in the back of the Landrover. It was cold but the sun warmed the bed and I just drifted in a tech free bliss.

I thought of you yesterday as I hand sanded a benchtop for a hour. So meditative. I think I am finally understanding how sanding can be enjoyable.

Awww... So lovely. That's the best kind of feeling coming fron a comment. I'm currently on a sanding marathon. And it's been awesome. Of course, it hasn't been device-free since I'm recording part of the process and taking photos. But I think that's also a nice way to put the device away and not look at it so a lot for time.

Sweet dreams are made of this. Who am I to disagree? 🎶🎵

Lovely tech free bliss! I often lay in my hammock and let all stuff drift away for some time. No phone, just me melding on the hammock and becoming it. No worries, only swing. 😂

Oh, well, always to do something, and I see you are not bored either hahah
I wish you a lot of success for next Saturday, I hope you will rock there :D

Indeed. No devices and boredom are a bad mix. Hopefully, it will never get to that.

Thanks a lot! I'm still working on the details, but it will be done in no time.

You will do it fine, you'll see 😇

😌😁✨🙏🏻

That's good for you @bertrayo that you can enjoy the weekend even without gadgets. You're right that we have a lot of things to do even without gadgets. Keep it up.

I try as much as I can. Sometimes it's inevitable since a lot of work implies recording and taking photos, so the phone is always in use.

All work and no play makes Ada a dull girl hahaha, Even if I was busy as hell over the weekend, something very special would have to happen for me to be without any of those devices, although it doesn't say smart tv, so... 🤣

Ha, ha, ha, ha. I thought it was high time someone made a joke about The Shining. What you say is true. However, I think there's a lot to be accomplished from that. Right now it's impossible due to the challenge.

Pd. There tons of devices missing from the list, so it's easy to cheat.

I am surprised that no one has talked about The Shining, The world is no longer like it used to be hahahaha.

Well, I'm no cheater, but I can make some exceptions. 😉🤣.

Well, I spelled the joke right there. So, I'm glad you spotted it.

😉😘

♥️🥰✨

Same here, I could live for a no-device weekend too my dear friend, for once I had nothing. So I am really used to it before. Unlike at present that almost everyone are really addicted to gadgets since in the real world, they are also essential to my job. What a great idea of a no-device weekend. Have a great time my friend and keep safe always.

Being used to that is an interesting experience. Remember I used to do more back when I didn't have devices like these. It was such an interesting time. It's good to know three are still people around who can keep themselves busy with things outside the scope of electronics.

Have a great weekend!

So true, and I so agree with your words. Just like you, I once had nothing, so it will never be difficult for me to adjust for a no-device weekend for as long as nature is there healing my broken soul. I so appreciate your time and attention my friend. Have a nice time and take care always.

It's good to know there are still people who can put the device down and brake the tether with electronics. It isn't the easiest of tasks nowadays. But it is totally worth it!

Exactly, my friend. Cheers to more no-gadget days while doing worthwhile things. I so feel you and I am at your good side when it comes to a weekend without a device. Thank you so much for your time and attention.

It was a nice commentary on the whole idea of this hypothetical situation. However, I do like to have the phone to take photos of my work.
