The Young Shall Grow - Weekend Engagement [W123]

The position one takes in the family says more about his obligations to the family, especially at the early stage. For instance, the firstborn (or the eldest) of the family, especially the male children are seen to have more obligations, as they often get exposed to the hustles of life, in order to provide for the family and the younger ones, especially in cases where the father isn't doing well or is dead.

This was the case in my family, as my elder brothers see to the needs of the family and the well-being of the younger ones like me. Being the last of a family of six (6) - four males and two females, my little expenses were solely on my brothers.

Upon finishing my junior secondary school, one of my brothers took me in and took full responsibility for my education through to the university level. Though he wasn't too financially buoyant, he felt that is what needed to be done. As a result, it wasn't too easy on him, as he kept on making a lot of personal sacrifices to make sure he sees me through.

Being aware of the financial status of my family, I did all I could in making sure I contribute in my own little way, so I won't have to be asking him for everything. For instance, n my 100 level, I engaged in a student work-study program, and it really helped a lot.

Being the only boy to go through the university, of course, comes with high expectations; like getting a high-paying job and paying back the family for sponsoring your education. Currently, the reality on the ground is that the young is already grown. The lastborn of yesterday now answers uncle to not less than five people, and am sure you know what that means!

It means that the boy that has few expenses yesterday, is now man enough to contribute one or two in the lives of the younger ones. I am now expected to buy bicycles, phones, clothes, laptops, etc. In other words, the dependent boy is now being depended on to some extent.

The truth is, this has always been my prayer and the best way I feel I can repay my brothers for their contributions in my life - making sure I see to the needs of their children. This has been my motivation in all that I do. Though am yet to get to that stage, with the progress so far, I feel and I know I am not too far from getting there. But I am very proud of the little I am doing in their lives in one way or the other, as it gives me this conviction of being useful and grateful.
