If there will be a list of weekends I'd carve on a stone to remind me of forever, this is going to be one of them.
As someone who had to wake up early in the morning and had to face every day of the week with loads of paper works, teaching lessons to students, countless meetings in school and the like, what I always look forward to during the weekends is to just stay in my room, turn off my alarm clock and wake up at noon. But, this weekend of April 1st had been different -- and by different, I meant a wonderful kind of different. Because in my four years and seven months of staying in the town where I am teaching right now, this very weekend happened to be the first time I'm going to spend my night at the beach, camp with my tent, eat some good food and spend time with some really good people.
That Saturday afternoon, me and my friends planned to spend the weekend on the mountains but since at that moment the weather was not cooperating and there was a sign of rain, we decided to just camp on the beach near our town. So we had a ten minute drive to the place with our motorcycles (with the special participation of my motorbike, Noah) and arrived at five in the afternoon. When we went to the spot, we were supposed to catch the sunset but the clouds were thick enough to cover the beauty of the sun that sets so we were only able to catch a small glimpse of the sun.
Fortunately, it didn't rain and the moon was punctual enough to showcase its beauty in the middle of the blue sky above us.
The view of the ocean and the horizon ahead gave a calming feeling that all of the stresses and chaos that happened during the weekends had vanished in an instant.
We walked a few minutes from where we parked our motorbikes to the spot where we had to build our tents. After assembling our tents, the men in the group started cleaning the fish and marinating the pork meat, the others were starting the fire where they grill the foods.
Meanwhile, I was playing with one of our friend's daughter named Jhaziel. She is an eight-year-old girl with a great life ahead of her. She was the only kid who joined our weekend getaway and I was glad because I will be able to talk to some kid and play with her because playing with kids were some of my pastimes when I was still in my original hometown Medellin.
I just love talking to kids because there is just something in them that's full of wonder -- their innocence and honesty are so adorable.
After our GTKWEO or Getting To Know With Each Other phase that afternoon since it was our first encounter, we walked down the beach and collected some seashells. We also watched her father's favorite movie White Chicks on my phone and I just kept on entertaining her by telling her stories and talking about her interests while the others were busy preparing the foods.
After collecting the seashells, we named each of them Lady Red, Lady Brown, Lady White, Lady Purple and so on. I admit Jhaziel has really dragged out the kid in me and we hadn't noticed it was already getting dark and the foods were already good to eat.
We stepped out of the tent and proceeded to the table where the foods were served. We had a "boodle fight" (a famous food preparation here in the Philippines wherein the foods were served in a banana leaf -- the rice in the middle and all the other types of foods like grilled pork or fish and fruits are in the corners or on top of the rice -- and everyone will stand with the food in the center and they will eat with their bare hands). While we were eating, we also talked about so many things and laughed with our mouths full of delicious foods and interesting topics.
Good foods really become better than the best when you eat them with your bare hands with some great people and some great ambiance coming from the sea breeze.
After eating, the night was still young so we decided to continue talking and chatting with each other under the moonlit sky.
Oh how I love to see this enchanting scenic beauty of the moon and the stars above. This is all worth the sleepless nights and tiring days.
When it was already late at night, Jhaziel's parents took her home to sleep and they just went back to continue the night.
It was already dawn and we already finished a few drinks and added more and we played a game called "charade". We had a round robin of actors who will be given a title of a song or a movie and he/she will act out in front and everyone will guess what the title was. There was a lot of laughing and merrymaking that night and everyone enjoyed the evening we didn't even notice the dawn was already close to breaking.
If it was not for my eyes that had to close early and the rain that had to pour down heavily, we could have not stopped our mouths to talk, our laughters to burst and our memories of that very weekend to bulge.
Nevertheless, if I had a list of weekends I'd carve on a stone to remind me of forever, that weekend of April 1st will be one of them.
