Do you also recall those moments when music videos were still popular? Instead of going to Spotify directly to listen to your favorite music, you'll go to YouTube to watch MV. Was the same in your watching behavior concerning vlogs? Are you still paying attention to them like you were before? Have you noticed your favorite artist's YouTube stats declining even with recognition on other platforms? Maybe, I guess. Just compare Taylor Swift's recent music video views compared to before.
Guess what? It's all because of none other than TikTok. It is a popular social media platform offering free, entertaining, and educational short videos without too many ads. It doesn't provide monetizing programs yet, but it gives a lot of opportunities. As a kid, I used to watch YouTube videos. But since I installed TikTok, everything started to change. It's alarming how my curiosity became a big part of my everyday routine and how much time I wasted. Yeah, I'm guilty, but it was not a crime.
One of the reasons why I'm addicted is because of its algorithm. We often see recommended videos based on our viewing history and liked videos. Therefore, it's unarguable that their artificial intelligence knows what you want to watch. For example, I wanted a video about a life hack related to school, and surprisingly, it will show related videos in my feed. It is also shorter than YT, influencing me to scroll and spend more time. Just imagine myself spending more than two hours a day and sometimes more.
I hate to admit I'm already addicted, but I can't promise I would entirely avoid it. Aside from helping me to be entertained by watching a series of videos, it also helped me to generate money by being an affiliate. Just imagine my excitement whenever I saw someone interested in my videos, and I influenced them to buy my items. It's entirely damn rewarding. Undoubtedly, it can also excel not just in creating videos. Maybe I can control how long I use it, but it was a bit impossible for me to eradicate that unproductive habit.
Back to the introduction, it's not worth wondering why most social media users are no longer interested in watching long videos, as it offers them a big convenience. I don't know about its scientific explanation, but I know there's a science behind it. Maybe you are wondering why it's hard for new artists to emerge in the music scene and why old artists are given more recognition. For instance, Rihanna's song from 2005 is currently trending in TikTok, and Taylor Swift's song "Cruel Summer" is given so much hype. Conversely, aspiring musicians tend to be left behind because they were not given enough spotlight.
Having this habit influenced me to procrastinate in some scenarios, but my way to eradicate it is proper time management. I think that there's nothing wrong with watching those videos if that's what makes us happy. I admit that there's a moment where I'm too busy scrolling, and I didn't notice that I'm almost getting late to school. It is a bit unproductive, but I learned that it's important that you control yourself before it lets control you.
