Some Unexpected House Guests

IN 2020, we'd met a couple in a Troopy at the Pink Lakes in north eastern Victoria. They were young, just over their mid 20's, and starting a big trip at the time the world was shut down. Uncertain of taking 4WD tracks themselves, they were keen to come along with us, having admiration for our 50 year old Landrover. We had a great time with them - though they were half our age, we all got along really well. Cue two years later, and Raynor and his best mate Jack were on their way back from Western Australia and thought they'd call in and see us. Three days later, they are still here - currently cooking lunch in my kitchen, after collecting eggs from my chooks.

Jack's car had to be towed here from an hour away, and he's awaiting a coil to arrive so that he can get it on the road again, so they asked if they could hang about til then. Of course they could - at the risk of sounding like an old person, they are lovely young men - polite, curious, kind. They've asked me about mushrooms, herbs, surfing, chickens, sucking information from me like a sponge, fascinated. With Jamie they've talked endless mechanics. WE've talking about travel, religion, mosquitos, cooking, covid, and everything in between. They're a joy to have around.

On Saturday we took them to Erskine Falls out the back of Lorne to show them the waterfall, a real attraction around here. We drove some bush tracks and then they shouted us a pie and coffee at Dean's Marsh - mine was lentil and vegetable, theirs beef. They're big meat eaters but also are fascinated by the veggie meals I've made them which is sweet.

We spent a lot of time on the Sunday drinking beers and shooting arrows - seems like a good combination, right? The sunshine is out in full force and it felt like a proper holiday sitting in the shade of the trees having a laugh with friends. Sometimes I forgot I was old enough to be their Mum. It's quite strange, isnt' it, to have young people to seek you out. They seem to like our stories and find us excellent value. I'm worried I'm going to run out of fun facts and things to say.

This morning I got up early and went for a solo surf. I find it hard being around poeple so much - I get a little hypersensitive and wired. It was nice to wash that all away and come home and find them still here. They were wandering around my garden with beers misidentifying all my plants which was hilarious, like two uninformed garden gnomes. I walked them around and fed them plants - horseradish leaves, gotu kola, mint, garlic scapes, broad beans, which they greatly enjoyed.

They even keenly watched Jamie working on a gearbox.

Now they're keen to housesit for us in January. They'd be perfect houseguests and love our place so much. They're constantly grinning in wonder, thrilled with the chickens, killing themselves laughing as they feed them spaghetti or watch them run across the yard. They've tidied the kitchen immaculately, brought in the washing, and took time lapses of the daises opening on the grass.

It'll be very quiet around here when they go tomorrow, but I think I'll also heave a sigh of relief. I do love my own space too, though it's been unexpected fun to have such guests arrive.

With Love,

The waterfall is beautiful! Look like you have a lot of fun from over there.

Yes. Hope you are well.

Ohhh! Love to read these stories 💖 They remind me to my time as a backpacker in Australia 🏕

Oh I bet you had a great time!

Sounds like you had a right royal time enjoying young company letting your hair down.

!LUV

Ha totally, us old folks need some young blood every now and then 😂😂😂😂

Most enjoyable times sharing stories, or debating them about daily events.

Yup, young people bring spice into one's life. I'm glad you have come across some twice in the last few years.

They sure do. Very energizing, though I'm exhausted 😂😂 and sick of cooking

We had WWOOFers here for a period of time, and I taught them to cook, if they didn't know how. One liked it so much I sent him home with a recipe book of the meals he learned.

I have a friend who constantly says "Hang around with younger as much as you can, enough with all our tired friends", of course he means in age or heart.
Glad you enjoyed it, sounds refreshing :)
I wish you were closer, I would love to come over there and spend time with you at the garden misidentifying plants, haha. At the beach we can be in the two opposite sides, I need my space too so I totally understand :))

Oh if you were at the beach with me now you'd love it!!

Oh, WOW! Pure magic! Enjoy it to the max!

So great when friends come around and you have a great time with them.
But I so understand how you feel after a while. I have the same. I’m very sensitive to energy… and sometimes people can be enough. We need to recharge alone. Good you done just that.

Hahaha “drinking beers and shooting arrows“ yep great combo… 🤣😂

Funny to think younger ones look up to us and want to know all the information available… like little sponges 🤓

Thanks for sharing @riverflows 👋🏻😊 have a wonderful new week!

It's so sweet they want to learn from us. It's the way it should be but a lot of younger people would rather die than spend time with old people. But then we did at that age... They were fun to hang out with!

Indeed as it should be. And I know not many young ones want too.
I know I always spend time with older people, never ones of my age.
Good to hear.
Have a lovely day 👋🏻☀️

This morning I got up early and went for a solo surf. I find it hard being around people so much - I get a little hypersensitive and wired.

Same here. Even if it's friends or family. And I read 'weird' instead of wired ;<)

Still sounds like a fun visit though.

xx

Oh weird works too! I'm a bit fed up with them now. They are gorgeous but I am overstretched!

I get it. I even experience this with my own twin ( sister ) and my beautiful niece and nephew. I recently spent 3 days at their place (including a couple of multihour stretches of kidsitting ) and I come back totally drained. I struggle to find my own space and save my energy, when with others, no matter how well I know them.

Unexpected visitors are the best. Even better if you are still getting to know them. Good to push us out of our routines. But I admit I am a real homebody these days. I like home, the garden, hiking the woods I know, having a nice lunch with my wife.

Oh me too. That sounds heavenly. It's the simple life, right?

OMG, how fun. I smiled several times and laughed out loud at least once. Gold. Love it.

Looks like you had a great time enjoying your company... the Eskrine waterfall is amazing

It's truly beautiful. There's a lot of waterfalls in the area!
