Unspoken words

in The Ink Well22 days ago

Jakes and Nora had been together since high school. They were childhood friends turn sweethearts; twenty years later, Jake was moving across the country for a new job, so he had told her, and Nora was staying behind to finish her medical school, although she wanted to follow him.

Their goodbye began on a sunny Saturday morning.

Jake pulled out of the driveway, but instead of heading straight to the highway, he drove to a court and she was surprised to see her parents there, everybody knows how much they loved each other, after the court wedding, Nora was the happiest person, although Nora has insisted that they get married before he travels.

Jake has tried to turn it down, but Nora won't hear of it. So he surprised her a day before his traveling, and later, he drove her to their favorite park. They sat on a bench, holding hands, reminiscing about their first date, which had been a picnic in that very same spot.

After an hour, Jake said he had to get going, but first, he wanted to take one last walk around the neighborhood. They strolled hand-in-hand, pausing at every significant landmark: the ice cream shop where they'd shared their first kiss, the bookstore where they'd spent countless hours browsing together, and the coffee shop where they'd studied for exams.

As they walked, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the streets they'd called home.

Eventually, they made their way back to the car, but instead of leaving, Jake suggested they grab dinner at their favorite restaurant. Over burgers and fries, they talked about their dreams, their fears, and their promises to each other.

As the night wore on, Jake realized he was running perilously behind schedule. But he couldn't bear to say goodbye just yet. He couldn't bring himself to tell Nora the truth equally.

They decided to take one last drive along the coast, watching the stars twinkle to life above. They pulled over at a scenic overlook, where Jake pulled out a small box containing a beautiful silver necklace with a tiny compass.

"I want you to have this," he said, his voice trembling. "Wherever I am, my heart will always be with you, no matter what happens."

Nora's eyes welled up with tears as she fastened the necklace around her neck.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Jake knew he couldn't delay any longer. He pulled Nora into a long, tender kiss.

As they parted lips, Nora whispered, "I'll love you forever."

Jake smiled, his eyes shining with tears. "Forever and always."

They went to a guest house and had fun that night before Jake decided to drop Nora cause he wanted to visit his grandma for the last time. And he didn't want Nora to come along.

With one last glance, Jake got into his car and drove away after he had dropped Nora at their home, leaving Nora standing alone under the starry sky, waving Goodbye to him.

Nora shouted "See you in the morning"

Jake waved back, smiling, but tears welled up in his eyes as soon as he was out of Nora's sight.

The following morning before 6 o'clock, Nora was at Jake's grandma's house to see him off to the airport.

They stood at the airport gate, lingering in each other's arms. The sound of departing flights and murmuring travelers faded into the background as they savored their last moments together.

Nora's eyes sparkled with tears as Jake gently stroked her hair. "I'll be back before you know it," he whispered, forcing a smile.

But Jake knew the truth. He had been diagnosed with a terminal disease just a month ago, and his doctors gave him mere months to live. He couldn't bear to tell Nora, couldn't shatter the happiness that radiated from her like sunlight.

As they hugged, Jake memorized the feel of her warm skin, the scent of her perfume, and the softness of her lips. He knew that every goodbye from now on would be a silent farewell, a whispered "I love you" that might be their last.

Nora pulled back, her brow furrowed. "What's wrong, Jake? You seem...different since yesterday."

Jake's heart skipped a beat. Had he been too obvious? He shook his head, feigning nonchalance. "Just tired, that's all. Long trip ahead and didn't get enough sleep last night."

Nora's concern softened, replaced by a tender smile. "I'll wait for you, no matter how long."

Nora made a baby face "Promise Jake that you won't stay too long to come back".

Jake looked at Nora with sadness in his eyes, I won't be long but you have my token of love on your neck"

Nora giggles, touching her necklace before saying don't forget to call or text me every day.

Jake's "I won't dare forget it my darling"

As they shared one last, lingering kiss, Jake felt the weight of his secret crushing him. He knew that their goodbye would stretch into eternity, and Nora would never understand why he didn't stay to cherish their final moments together.

With a heavy heart, Jake turned and walked away, disappearing into the crowd as Nora called out, "I love you!"

His whispered response was lost in the din of the airport: "Forever, my love...forever."

After two months, that Jake left, Nora got the news of his death. She was devastated, her world came crashing on her.

She took her mind down memory lane, so that is why he said those LONG GOODBYES TO ME, and that's why he was acting strange.

She wept cause she was never going to see him again. She didn't get to tell him that she was expecting their first child, which she kept as a secret to surprise him as he had promised to come back the next month, but she never expected his corpses.

Thank you for taking the time to read. I love you all

No. I wrote the story by myself from the story that I heard from a friend about someone

It might be a coincidence

That would have hurt a lot. He should have just told her the truth from the onset.

It's not that easy, my brother chased me out of the hospital just so he would die peacefully cause I didn't let him.
