Shopping with Lucía [ENG][ESP]

in The Ink Well17 days ago

It was a sunny Thursday morning, which seemed to be a very hot day. I told my husband "my love, remember that today is Thursday and it is my turn to go shopping. I am going with my friend Lucia since she ran out of food".

My husband replied "ok my love be very careful, you know that driving a wheelchair is sometimes very difficult". I stood there thinking for a moment and lamenting that my friend Lucia in her condition has to go out and stand in long lines with me so she can have something to eat. I decide to push those pessimistic thoughts out of my mind and start getting dressed to go out.

When looking for my friend Lucia, I found the pleasant news that they were going to take us to the market and leave us there, so it would be easier to get there. Even though Lucia has a birth condition of cerebral palsy she has been able to do things that many other people in her condition cannot, she is the bravest person I know.

We went quickly to the site and made a long line in which we spent about 2 hours, it was a very short time compared to the more than 8 hours that other people had to spend, as my friend had a condition they let us pass faster. We were very happy, that day we were able to buy 3 corn flour each, 1 kilogram of rice, shampoo, toilet paper and bath soap. It was not always possible to find hygiene products, there was no toothpaste, sanitary napkins among other things, but with the things we bought we were happy.

Lucia carried our shopping on her legs, which made it easier for me to manage the wheelchair. No way! You have to cross a busy street. "Thank God there is a traffic light!" I thought out loud. When I go halfway across the street I could no longer move forward, something was wrong with the chair, Lucia between nerves shouted "we fell into a hole". My look became desperate, the traffic light was about to change and I was still there in the middle of the street, there was not even a person walking around that could help us.

Those seconds we were there felt like the longest of my life, I had time to remember my husband's words before leaving, where he told me to be careful with the wheelchair. What occurred to me at that moment was to remove the bag from my friend's legs to make the chair lighter so I could move it. My teeth were on edge, but what I had experienced had not been as uncomfortable as what I had yet to experience. As I picked up the bag, I didn't realize how heavy it was and the weight of the bag threw me off balance and I fell forward with the bag. How embarrassing! On one side was my friend with the wheel of her wheelchair stuck and on the other side was me on the floor.

I felt that my life and my friend's life was in danger and from down there I could do nothing, I looked up only to see the traffic light changing color and I imagined the worst. Moments later something happened that I did not imagine, the two cars that were first to pass were placed one in front of the other, blocking the passage of others and the drivers got off and ran to help us, they pulled my friend out of there and helped me to lift, I felt my teeth on edge, however, I told them how grateful I was for that gesture.

When we were safe, the two drivers returned to their vehicles and opened the way, so everything returned to normal. Lucia said to me "Marta, are you ok?" when she saw my face so red and my lost look. Slowly I saw her eyes and started to laugh, just remembering how the two of us were stuck in that street, she also started to laugh. People passed by and looked at us strangely because of the way we were laughing.

It has been 4 years since then and the food situation has improved, we can go shopping the day we want and we get the necessary things. However, that moment even though it set my teeth on edge, whenever I remember it I still laugh as much as I did that day, after all the embarrassment we went through it became the funniest anecdote of my life. No matter what situation we may be in, the little moments with our friends make life funnier.

Awwww
You’re such a good person and thank God those drivers had good heart too.
I’m sure at that moment, you mind would have almost scattered at different possibilities of what might have happened but if you remember everything that happen, it will only feel you with joy and laughter.

I’m sure your friend is happy to have you as a friend. Things like this happen and when we reminisce about it, it put smile on our face.

Very well written8
Greetings @nathy33

A very extreme experience that you went through. Fortunately, there are still good people who help others, that is what makes us human. Today they can remember and laugh at one more anecdote that happened in your life.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Happy day.
