Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #30

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week

@ricardo993
Breaking mental paradigms

Watching sunsets and stars in the sky, enjoying crystal-clear waters, and lighting fires that ignite my soul. I am not useless, I have achieved a lot. Perhaps I haven't been to Angel Falls or climbed Everest, but it's only a matter of time before my plane takes off and flies far, far away. I just need to clear my mind and soul, as well as help build a strong foundation so that when opportunities arrive, I can take off as I should.

@kemmyb
Friendship and the clean sweep

But I worried every minute about the untidy state of the apartment. She noticed and apologised that it was who she was and she would be leaving soon anyway. I could decorate to my taste after. I smiled and tried to ignore the situation so it didn't come between our budding friendship.

@jhymi
A clean slate

There's a thrill that comes with moving to a new place. Like a new city, a new state, maybe even a new country. It's like you're a new person, like you're reborn. You could be anything and anyone you want. Nothing is holding you back. No one holding you back.

@nelson-george
Godlike Cleanliness

I hurried to the kitchen to fix up the dishes but water didn't rush from the tap. I went outside to discover the entire compound was fresh out of water which would make the mission at hand very hard to complete but the fear of my mother has always been the beginning of my wisdom.

Third Place: Wins 2 Hive

Our third place winner is @diebitch, with the story:

Petrichor

Source

I was standing on an Irish beach where waves went up to the dark cliffs and barely kissed them before disappearing in the deep expanse of the ocean. The salt from the waves still lingered in the air as it taunted the deep green leaves of the dense trees surrounding the cliffs.

Second Place: Wins 3 Hive

Our second place winner is @popurri, with the story:

A new place

Source

The toys that once lay scattered on the floor for most of the day, dolls, little trains, balls, a gray castle with its, knights, horses, dragons, princesses and kings, waiting for children to sit down and bring them to life, were now in a trunk abandoned in a dark and lonely place.

First Place: Wins 5 Hive

Our first place winner is @mineopoly, with the story:

After the Flood

Source

I remember the Christmas tree and so many big presents. I remember my cousins laughing and my brother making jokes. The magic of the living room was snuffed out by the flood like a candle snuffed out by the wind. The whole first floor was covered in about ten inches of mud. The smell of cigarettes and stale beer was mixed with a moldy sewage smell that still lingers in my head.
