Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #74

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @fashtioluwa, with the story:

A Young Heart

Immediately she hugged me; it was like the time had stopped counting; there was a soft breeze blowing around us like I was in the middle of a Greenland. I could see flowers and ladybirds flying all around me. We held our hands as we walked through the vast land filled with flowers.

Curator's comment :

Fashtioluwa writes an absolutely delightful CNF about his crush in HS and how she made his head spin. Tremendous writing on the part of F.

Featured

Highlighting @lightpen, with the story:

Heavy load on my head

The whole bar was a mini chimney. Sitting anywhere for a few minutes is enough to cause someone to be diagnosed as a smoker.

Curator's comment :

Lightpen brings us a #CNF for the *spin* prompt and tells the story of how an evening of overindulgence back in 2010, when he spent the Christmas Eve in a bar with some friends, resulted in his decision to quit drinking alcohol for good. He tells the story with candour and humour yet still shares the seriousness of the situation. A nicely developed piece with great dialogue that drove the story forward.

Highlighting @loveth97, with the story:

A love at first sight experience

Aunty Mary assured her that we were both her loves and went back to the hair she was braiding. We kept ourselves busy by helping her loosen braids of some customer old braids or with washing of hair. The salon was lively with gossip and stories, we laughed at some stories and exchanged looks at others.

Curator's comment :

loveth97 writes an entertaining CNF about her relationship with her mother and her best friend, and their afternoon at her aunt's beauty salon. It's such a fun read and the characters are great;

Featured

Highlighting @hazmat, with the story:

ELEVENTH HOUR KNIGHT

He came out of his compound looking like a wounded lion and whatever idea I had about running fizzled out of my brain. Running would've had no use because my house was just about three buildings away from his and I didn't want my parents to find out what had just happened.

Curator's comment :

Hazmat surprises with a stellar CNF about breaking windows in his neighbourhood and taking the consequences. According to H true sportsmanship exists in his ambit because he is saved from the bell by a likeminded peer. Beautifully told!

This Week's Prompt 74:

"Turbulence"

Ideas :

  • Perhaps you encountered turbulence while pursuing your ambitions because a foe sabotaged your plans.
  • Maybe you get a turbulent rush of adrenaline when faced with competing in sport or in business.
  • You might've experienced turbulence while navigating a particularly difficult relationship with a friend or family member.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
