Welcome to the Weekly Fiction Prompt

Hello community members! Apologies, as this prompt post is late!

Thank you for joining our weekly writing prompt! If you're new, be sure to check out our community rules before posting in The Ink Well. (You can find them at the top of our home page. And you will find all kinds of great resources for fiction writers in our catalog of fiction writing tips.

Stories from the Previous Week

Thank you to who posted a story for last week's prompt: "Sportsmanship":

Author Shout-outs

We'd like to call out a few stories that got high marks from our curators.

@gabmr

Another Kind of Winner

Curator comment:

@gabmr writes a humorous fiction for the theme of sportsmanship. An aunt, fond of fast food, signs up for a triathlon in which she competes with trained participants for $10,000. Despite the obvious difficulties, the aunt runs, stays on the bike and swims. While the ambition of other participants plays to disqualify the fittest, the aunt, who is initially mocked, is among the finalists. The prize goes to a cancer survivor, but the aunt becomes a hero thanks to her persevering spirit.

@rare-gem

Barrister Timmy, the Footballer

Curator comment:

rare-gem writes an excellent story for the sportsmanship prompt. While the story covers the oft-trod ground of kids being told what discipline they needed to pursue by the parents and then defying them, rare-gem takes the storytelling up a big notch with excellent character development, and a really strong story arc. This is one of the best stories I've seen from this writer yet!

@kingsleyy

Not a Chelsea Day

Curator comment:

@kingsleyy writes a well-crafted story about a football fan's sports betting failure and how the opposing team's fan gets in his face when their team kicks the winning goal and he loses $800. Great story about sportsmanship (or lack thereof)

@ukrajpoot

Sportsmanship Prevented a War

Curator comment:

@ukrajpoot delights with his response to the sportsmanship prompt. He imagines 8-foot aliens landing on earth and expressing their intention to take over the planet. However, they offer an out to the citizens of earth. It seems the aliens are fascinated by the game of cricket. They propose a match between earthlings and aliens. If the earthlings win, the aliens may go away. @ukrajpoot gives a blow-by-blow of the game. Cricket players from all over earth come together. In the game, they display outstanding sportsmanship. Earthlings win and the aliens are impressed with the way they played (good sportsmanship). The aliens go away. Well written and funny.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Toast."

What to do with this prompt?

Okay, we know what questions you may be asking at this moment:

  • What is interesting and dramatic about toast?
  • How am I supposed to come up with a story about bread?
  • Why do you admins in The Ink Well torture us so?? 😄

Consider these thoughts, friends:

  1. Couples can fight over the use of the toaster or the freshly made toast when they are trying to rush to get ready for work. (High drama!!)
  2. Toast is not just a noun (toasted bread). It is also a verb that is used for turning anything brown. People can toast marshmallows around a campfire, for instance. There are always opportunities for writing dramatic stories when there's fire!
  3. And of course, we must not forget another completely different use of the word "toast" which is to raise glasses of champagne or wine and say something pleasant or profound about a person or a couple — such as at a wedding or a retirement party. What if the toast goes awry? What if the person responsible for the toast messes it up? Or says the wrong thing? What if the person giving the toast is jealous because he thought he should have been the one to marry the bride??
  4. Oh, but there's one more. There's an expression — "You're toast!" This is something that one brother might say to another when the first one has done something heinously wrong and against family rules. "Dude, if Mom finds out, you are toast!"

We look forward to seeing what your imagination comes up with! Be sure to review the Writing Prompt Guidelines below.

Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:

  • Great first lines
  • Good settings
  • Well-developed characters
  • Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
  • A conflict that intrigues the reader
  • A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
  • And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors

You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of fiction writing tips.

If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:

Writing Prompt Guidelines:

  1. See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
  2. Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  3. Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell — as well as #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
  4. Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
  5. Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
  6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
  7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
  8. Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.

Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.) And do NOT use AI tools to write your stories. You must provide your own unique content.
