Thank you to who posted a story for last week's prompt: "I won't back down":

Author Shout-outs

We'd like to call out a few stories that got high marks from our curators this week.

@grailent.kerb

Battle of Powers

Curator comment:

@grailent.kerb writes a story with an unconventional format, literally a battle between dark and light. The villains in the story seek to rob a village and all its inhabitants of their light. One young girl stands between them and this fate. She summons her courage. With the help of her ancestors and a magical owl she defeats the invading villains and saves the village. The story has a lyrical, epic quality to it that works well to deliver the theme.

@kei2

Enchantment

Curator comment:

@kei2 shares a story with equal parts magic, mystery and intrigue, plus a dash of Dora the Explorer. Little Amika is a bit accident prone, often teased by her brother, and harbors a deep fear that her family does not truly love her. Yet she has a special relationship with Grandma Litika who encourages her to be brave. When she wakes one morning to find them all gone, including Grandma, she is certain they finally all left her, and she goes on a magical adventure to find them, and instead ends up finding her bravery and herself. When she touches a floating map in the magical world, she is instantly transported back home where her family is waiting for her, having gone out to get her birthday presents. A charming and sweet story.

@aiuna

Dominic Ryan: The Real Fight Isn't on the Mat

Curator comment:

@aiuna's response to the "don't back down" prompt yielded an interesting story with strong character development. A young man, Dominic, is a ju-jitsu expert, but he doesn't like to compete. His practice sessions intrude into his time with his girlfriend. He suggests she try ju-jitsu — then they'd be able to go to practice together. The girlfriend does this, but it turns out the ju-jitsu instructor develops a crush on the girlfriend. Dominic insists she stop training at the school. After a few weeks, he sees the instructor's car at his girlfriend's house. Dominic was right. The instructor definitely had a crush, but the girlfriend did not. They sign up for lessons at a new school. However, Dominic has changed. This experience has given him the desire to compete. Perhaps he imagines competing with the instructor, although that is not directly stated in the story. The plot in this piece is well developed, and the characters are rather complex.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Sink or swim"

Welcome to the prompt of the week. For this week's prompt, tell us stories about characters who face interesting obstacles — and they must decide whether the challenging circumstances will cause them to "sink" or if they will conquer it and "swim".

"Sink or swim" is an expression that one person might say to another at a moment when one must choose whether to give up or try harder. For example, when heading into a courtroom, a defense attorney might say, "Okay, we will sink or swim!"

Or maybe when two desperately broke people decide they have to rob a market in order to survive, one might say to the other, "Here we go. Sink or swim!"

In other words, "sink or swim" is typically a "figurative" expression — it is not actually indicating that one must either swim or drown — but that the impending choices and actions will either be successful or will result in failure.

Good luck. Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:

  • Great first lines
  • Good settings
  • Well-developed characters
  • Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
  • A conflict that intrigues the reader
  • A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
  • And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors — please use the free Grammarly tool for grammar and spelling checks (and not AI writing or rephrasing tools for revising)

You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of storytelling tips.

If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:

Writing Prompt Guidelines:

  1. See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
  2. Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  3. Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell — as well as #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
  4. Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
  5. Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
  6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
  7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
  8. Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.

Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.) And do NOT use AI tools to write or manipulate your stories. You must provide your own unique content.
